Title: Sort of new

Hi everyone, I had joined sometime back but was never really active here, and got out of Bettas for a while. My attention turned to Killifish instead, which are still probably one of my favorite fish. However, I had been wanting to get back into Bettas for some time. They, too, have stole a place in my heart alongside the Killis.

A few weeks ago I saw some female Bettas being sold at Walmart. I was really surprised to see females there. Normally I just walk past the fish area, but I had to look. There was a nice, solid, stunning blue female that was also very healthy looking, and I would have liked to get her but didn't.

The following week we had been back, so I decided to see if she was still there, and she was. I was really thinking long and hard about it, but I was almost late for my daughter's gymnastics class and had to put the cup down and leave.

I came back after her class, and after some more deciding and debating, I got her. I also picked up a lovely, just as striking solid blue Crowntail male. I had never cared for Crowntails, thinking they resemble fish with fin and tail rot. But this male was very healthy looking and had the same deep blue coloration as this female had, so I just had to get him too.

The male is residing in my 5 gallon tank that was used as a fry grow out tank. The female is housed in my 10 gallon tank that was also, a fry grow out tank/future breeding tank for one of my Killis.

The only fish in the 10 were some White Clouds, my male Killie, and some Endler and Panda Cory fry. I noticed the females fins being torn and assumed it was the White Clouds, as they're much more lively and out compete her for food. So the White Clouds were moved into my 20 gallon.

Her fins continue to get worse, so now I'm suspecting it's my male Chromaphyosemion Poliaki Killi. In the meantime she's now being housed in a guppy breeder container inside the 10 gallon.

I really hate keeping her in that. Hopefully I'll figure out what to do with my other fish in the meantime. The only other thing I can think of is to put the male and female Betta in the 10, and house the Killie in the 5, but I'm not so sure that's the best thing to do.

Thanks for letting me ramble. The Betta bug hit me again, so yes, I'm back, at least for a little bit. lol :) I've always wanted to try breeding Bettas so I'm pretty excited to even have a pair at all now, lol

No, I'm not good with taking fish pictures.

My female ended up dying after I had her for 2 weeks. I was really hoping to try to breed her. In the meantime, I found another one in a store that was keeping females (and a male!) together in a community tank. They were MUCH healthier looking and I found one that complimented my male, so I purchased her. Unfortunately the worker spotted the male and promptly removed him into those blasted cups.

I just put the female in a guppy breeder tonight inside my male's tank, and she is so stressed now. I've seen nothing but continuous stress stripes. This female was so much healthier than the one purchased in the cup. That female rarely showed any other colors other than her stress stripes, too and she eventually died.

So, I'm thinking I may not be able to breed them after all. I really don't want to loose this female as she's so nice and healthy.

Being kept in a large community tank instead of those tiny cups really makes a difference in health!!

I would recomend you take her out of the breeder net. The other fish could be stressing her out. What are in the tank?

I you can get a 5g for her she will be much happier.

She was in a 5 gallon with my male. If she's not ready to breed and I just dump her in there he could tear her to shreds. She has her own 20 gallon tank, but I was trying to breed them. I put her in the guppy breeder so they could see each other but not get hurt, and then I could tell if she's ready to breed or not.

I'm thinking she may just be too immature yet and not ready. She's doing great in the 20 gallon. I'm not sure if or when I'm going to try it again. I've always wanted to breed Bettas, but I'm starting to think fate is against us.
