Title: Bad tail rot

I have a PK whose tail fell off almost overnight.
He isn't eating, so I can't give him tetracycline coated black worms.
And I don't think my fish meds are strong enough
The good news is I have some clindamycin capsules that was given to my brother, but he had a reaction to them.
I took them, because I thought I might have a chance to use it.

First, he is in a 2 gallon tank by himself..
Second, there is black worms in the tank, incase he does want to eat.
Third, there is no heat.. Unlike with paracites, where you want to raise the temperature to hasten the life cycle, you do not want to do that with a bacterial infection, especially one that is as agressive and fast moving as this one. Turn the heat up on bacterial infection, and the fishes system will get overwhelmed, and the infection will win.
Fourth, I put the antibiotices in a little cup with tank water in it, and when it is dissolved, I put the betta in the little cup for an antibiotic bath. I'll have him in that little cup for about a half hour.
That way I know some is getting into his system.
Fifth, if he starts looking better, I am going to have to wash his stump, (he has NO tail, just his peduncle) with peroxide to help kill off some of the bacteria. There is nothing left for me to trim..

So, we shall see how things go.

How's your PK doing? I haven't been on for a while. I recommend Providone iodine swabbed on with a cotton swab (while he's out of the water). It has worked every time for me on fin rot, as well as many other sores on a variety of fish. The only time I've had fin rot is when the temp wasn't warm enough. There were a couple times this winter the heaters just couldn't keep up with the -40° dips at night and I ended up with fin rot on almost all of my males.

It's quick. It's easy. It's cheap. It's fast. It'll cost you maybe a buck or 2 at Wal-Mart. It's relatively safe as well! Well, as long as you don't spill it on the carpet! lol! Trust me! I've used it dozens of times on fish. Probably close to a dozen times have been with bettas for fin rot and battle wounds. I'll be handy to keep on hand for those skinned knees the girls are bound to come home with!
