Title: Little fin biter... ARGH
Southernbelle - February 18, 2008 09:34 PM (GMT)
I used to have a beautiful Halfmoon, Rembrandt, until he started snacking on his fins. I'm ready to take Remy out of his tank and shake him or smack him or something. I wish I had a victorian collar they use for dogs.... :D ANYWAY.. I'm having a hard time even controlling his... convulsions, if you will. I have not caught him in the act, but there is nothing in the tank excpet a heater and chunks of his caudal, anal and his now nearly nonexisting dorsal end up missing daily. I have almond leaf on its way, and I've tried everything with no avail. I'm treating him with a light dose of med. to prevent fin rot from cropping up..
Any advice??????

I'd say give him lots of nice silk plants and a few hiding places, and, depending on the tank size, a buddy like a couple ADFs or Ghost Shrimp. That stopped one of my boys from biting his tail so much.

Thanks much for the advice. He's in a 2.5 gallon currently. I added back in his cave and one of his little silk plants tonight since I ruled out anything snagging. Its irritating he was so pretty. I mean, i know it wil grow back, hopefully, but its a bite. No pun intended... :D

Also, adding a little bit of flow to the tank. as in a itty bitty filter with VERY low flow might help bc he'll have to work a bit and not get so bored.
A new, more active location might help too. I think fin biting is boredom at it's best.

Yeah, That's a good idea too. I didn't think about that since my guy was already on my computer desk :P

I'm having the most terrible time with this, guys. I've moved him around, ive bought him some more plants, given him flow, taken it away, big space little space... i'm doing all i can to keep him entertained and i dont know how to make him stop biting. For like, a DAY, he stopped and then i caught him tonight nipping at his anal fin... aka the only one he really has left. :( I guess im just venting more than anything. sorry.. just frustrated beyond belief. He's my first HM and i spent a lot of time picking him out to hopefully breed. My last hope is lying on this almond leaf. Maybe it will chill him out some. If anything.. ANYTHING else comes to mind please share. Thanks so much guys, your advice is not going untaken.
