Title: Short-bodied fish on Aquabid
Synirr - June 30, 2006 08:38 AM (GMT)
I know the short body is a fault, but MAN is he adorable
I'd love to have a little cutie like that

Here's another one in red:
http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/auction/auc...aswt&1152340202
I really want the first one, but not for $40, especially when they don't ship through Linda so I can combine my shipping costs (I have some others coming soon) :P
Maybe no one will bid and I can make an offer, hehe
yeevia2006 - June 30, 2006 08:44 AM (GMT)
DO NOT BID. I SAY DO NOT BID.
Save it for synirr. LOL :lolo:
Did I make you day synirr? :flower
Synirr - June 30, 2006 11:14 AM (GMT)
LOL, thanks Yeevia! :OO
Surely no one would be silly enough to spend $40 on a fish that can't show? I think being short-bodied on a ST fish is a disqualifying fault? If not, it's such a major flaw that one would stand no chance of winning.
Still, think of how cute it would be to breed it into my tiny line, the ones that are like 1.5" tops fully grown. Real mini bettas! :lolo:
Maybe they could show in form variations if I got them SUPER tiny like I hope to.
Karah's_Mommy - June 30, 2006 02:17 PM (GMT)
It sucks that something so cute would be automatically disqualified, bleh. He is so adorable!!
Forever-Mango - June 30, 2006 03:19 PM (GMT)
Looks like a betta cross arowana :P
Betta Belle - July 1, 2006 06:19 AM (GMT)
I wouldn't breed him, they both look like shovelheads, which is a major defect.
No one knows exactly how badly the shovelhead fault can affect bettas, like we know how too much FT can effectn them making X factor fish.
Just keep on breeding your smallest fish together, and you weill get your small fish.
Hey, I'll evem send you my runts, lolol.
Synirr - July 1, 2006 10:25 AM (GMT)
Shovelhead?? Now there's a term I haven't heard before, care to explain?
I don't want one just because the body shape makes them shorter, I actually like the shape... I just think it would be fun to play around with.
Betta Belle - July 1, 2006 08:19 PM (GMT)
Well instead of a smooth gradiation of the head, it has a sharp slope to it.
It is harder to explain then it is to see it.

They aren't BAD shovelheads like the ones in the pictures I posted, but they do look like they are starting to show that tendancy.
To quote some one who knows far more than I do....
"This is a spinal deformity that most commonly affects singletails. The spine dips suddenly right behind the "nose" or on the forehead, making it looked wedge shaped, or like a small shovel. Some of them have it so severe they look like Flowerhorns. IT IS HEREDITARY. Not all the offspring will show it, but they will all carry the gene for shovelheadedness, and it will keep popping up in your line until you're ready to pull your hair out."
Styx - July 2, 2006 12:10 AM (GMT)
Ahhh! That blue one is so cute!
Synirr - July 2, 2006 01:46 AM (GMT)
Hmmm, I see what you mean, but I think it may just be a byproduct of the shortened spines making their bodies appear thicker. Either way, I'm still gonna try for the greeny one I think, assuming no one bids. He's just too darn cute
If I get him I'll check him out in person and decide from there... If I decide to breed, the shortened spine already prevents them from being shown, at least in normal classes, so I'm not particularly bothered by the idea of culling shovelheads should they pop up later on.
Betta Belle - July 2, 2006 07:31 AM (GMT)
Well the greeny one is certainly the better of the two.
The other one looks like he also has what I call a pinched spine. Not easy to explain, but if you look at the spaine between the dorsal and tail, it looks like someone pinched it in.
I have been wondering if this is a result of the DT gene, because every fish I have seen it in I KNOW for a fact carries DT.
The greeny one has a slightly extended dorsal that I associate with DT in the line, and though the other doesn't have the slightly extended dorsal, he certainly has a DT type body IMO.
And you know what?
In the long run, all that matters is that YOU like what you buy, and what you breed.
yeevia2006 - July 2, 2006 07:38 PM (GMT)
Is shovelheads also called as snakehead?
yeevia2006 - July 2, 2006 07:41 PM (GMT)
Holly cow. That betta selling for 40.00? Synirr. I would pay 15.00 the most for him or lower. ^_^
Betta Belle - July 3, 2006 05:59 AM (GMT)
Yes, Yeves, Snakehead or Alligator, or dragon mouth I have also seen them called.

Haha, yeah, I'm going to make an offer when the auction ends and explain that the short body is actually a known fault, so maybe I can get it for cheap.
I've seen a lot of masked bettas refered to as "snakehead"... the real snakehead fighter is Betta channoides though, that's their common name :)
Truebetta - July 3, 2006 10:30 AM (GMT)
Hello every members this is Uthen. :P Hey Yeevia..Im know that fish are real cute and i know breeder owner this line, but in thailand are very expensive, so i think impossible for $15.00/one.. :D .. I think Synirr can buy the one from him for $25-$35 usd, :D and Seller don't ship through Linda too..:lolo: I seem them more often than not.. :P
yeevia2006 - July 3, 2006 06:10 PM (GMT)
Wou. He won't ship to linda? Wou. That is bad. Mostly people still using Linda to ship bettas. :) It just people been using her for a while and I don't think I will change that unless I am not happy with her as my transhipper. So far she is great. ^_^
Synirr - July 4, 2006 05:22 AM (GMT)
I agree, I've never had a problem with Linda. She's a little overpriced, granted, but she ships in a timely manner and the fish always arrive alive and well. It really only costs about $20 to ship Express, I think she charges $28, plus extra for each fish if you are getting more than one or something like that :P. She charges $15 for Priority, it is only $5 really.
Betta Belle - July 4, 2006 06:18 AM (GMT)
I have never used anyone but Stacey, because all my OS fish have come from Sawarut, but I understand if she doesn't have any other charges.
I mean she has to pick the fish up, sort them, re pack them after giving them a chance to rest, and then take them back to thePO to send them out to you.
I don't know all what transhipping entains, but the whole customs thing makes me thnk there is a LOT of work, just from having imported ONE dog from Portugal some years ago.
Synirr - July 4, 2006 07:04 AM (GMT)
She does have other charges though, that's the thing :P
I don't mind it honestly, she has to pay $100 each every year for the two permits she needs, but I wish she'd separate it up and say the entra money wasn't part of the actual shipping cost. It's a little odd when you pay $30+ for Express and when you actually get the package it says it was $22 or something like that.
Truebetta - July 4, 2006 07:41 AM (GMT)
OH... :lolo: :P I see, i agree Linda too, she's Great transhipper, to day i ship my bettas through her to my customers 20 each fish and i ausually ship through her every shipment never has a problem. :WOW: . I mean that saller ussually ship through his transhipper in Iowa but all of you need to ship through Linda. so i think he's will not ship through her..Just think ^_^ :P

Oh, crap. The red dragon PK pair that I have both have that. I wanted to use them for breeding. Poo. I am glad that my first and only spawn attempt with them failed.
This is great info!
yeevia2006 - July 4, 2006 05:36 PM (GMT)
annaricebowl, Are you kidding me? I don't think yours look like that right? Your are much better if I remember. Put up the pictures and let me see.
Betta Belle - July 4, 2006 07:52 PM (GMT)
I need to make a correction. Some one asked about Snake Heads, and I have recently been told that snake head is a coloration thing where the fish had a masked face and dark eyes, or some such like that.
I have seen it being used in refference to shovel heads, and of course, alligator mouth IS shovel head.

Yes! My mother-in-law will be leaving Saturday morning. Sunday is water change day, so I know that I can definitely take pics this Sunday. I don't like to take pics of my fish if I feel that they or their homes don't look 99.9% perfect. lol
AnneRiceBowl - July 7, 2006 03:56 PM (GMT)
I've got a pic of Akasha (Red Dragon PK female). I am going to need the info again on how to enlarege pics. lol
Any way, this was the best pic of her that I could get:
Synirr - July 8, 2006 11:29 PM (GMT)
I offered the seller $25 for the green one and he replied with pics of spawn siblings, basically asking me if, after seeing those, I still didn't think they were worth his starting price
Well no sir, they're still not worth $40 to me, I don't care how cute they are :OO. He said that was the asking price for them in Thailand, but if he wants that much for them he might as well just sell them there then, because there's no way he's getting that from me. Hopefully I can wear him down, but he's holding pretty firm on the $40 at the moment.
Here are two of the pics of a short-bodied female he sent me:

How did I miss this??? I MEANT I can understand if she DOES have other charges.
See, I keep tell you guys, I need to stop posting stuff 3-5 AM, my brain just isn't working, and there is some weird misfire between my fingers, my brain, and the leyboard, lol.
Silly me.
