Title: Eggbound or Dropsy?
Description: Help!!
waterwitch - September 13, 2007 05:07 PM (GMT)
I'm pretty sure it's not an internal parasite. I've put her in with several gentle males (just to get her to release the eggs), and she won't wrap. Probably because she hurts. It sure looks like she does. I've never actually had a fish with dropsy, so I'm not sure if it's that or if she's seriously eggbound? She's still active and will dance around as much as she can when you get close to the tank. But she's getting bigger every day and I'm running out of time and options. I'm afraid I'm going to lose her if I can't figure out what's happening to her. Help??!

Has she been pooping? It almost looks like she's constipated, cause the eggbound females usually get flat and fat around their entire lower area like the bottom of a supertanker, wheras that's more like a golfball.

I agree, she looks more constipated than egg bound.
This is the relevant thread.

Look at her from above and see if she's pineconing. If so, it's probably dropsy. If not, it could still go either dropsy, constipation, or internal parasites.
Egg-binding really isn't that common. Most of the time it's one of the above. Eggs generally don't bind... usually they are re-absorbed.

I couldn't be sure at first since she was actually in the spawning tank (and I feel guilty about that for sure, but I thought she was eggy!), but she is pooping. I put her in the hospital tank, upped the temp and started treatment for parasites. So far she seems to be about the same. She's a Thai fish, and when she came in she was "eggy". I feed them Hikari bits twice a day, but I've been fasting her in case it was constipation. She's not happy about that. ^_^

CT females almost always looks as though they are ready to spawn. This female is not anywhere near conditioned, but she looks as though I could toss her in a spawn tank, and get 500 fry/
