Title: Potassium Permanganate where to buy it?
Newdayrising - August 30, 2007 06:48 PM (GMT)
I am writing this post up cause I am wondering if anyone knows where I can purchase this stuff Potassium Permanganate as I have decided to start using it for various things.
As it treats alot of stuff including external parasites, as well as fungal and bacterial agents. It can be used to sterilize plants and sterilize tanks and it also kills algae in tanks etc. I have been doing alot of reading on it and figured it would be beneficial to have and to use also has anyone used this stuff if so would they care to comment on it!

thanks davenia in asia they use it I had first seen it on a singapore goldfish site I will definitely have to get that tomorrow at my lfs.
I have never tried it before in any tanks but it must be effective as they use it for ponds too and for the treatment and also 10 min soaks for fish as well. I will definitely see how it works I will use it to sterilize my tank and my plants i will be getting

Gall darn it! I'm trying to think back to college. Potassium permaganate can be used in an emergency to supply oxygen. I can't remember where the oxygen molecules get stole from (chemistry wasn't my best subject), but I do remember my advisor saying to use it with extreme caution because unless a large water change happened within a certain amount of time something (can't remember what) would crash. It also turns the water purple. Pretty color actually. Sorry, I'd go look it up but I have all my book buried right now. Definately look into it more before using it. I would guess you'd be able to get it from a Fleet Farm type store.
I checked out Wikipedia. It looks to be quite the little chemical!

yeah i was looking it up as well it is KMnO 4 it is an oxydizing agent 4 hours is the max time to deactivate it you use hydrogen peroxide 3% or dechlorinator this is when you do not have any thing live in the tank and you are basically wanting to sterilize your tank and start a new here is a link providing more info from the university of Florida...

That link brought back memories. Brown hands. Yep, I got some on me. We were using it on indoor tanks, 500 - 700 gallon tanks. I recall doing a bunch of water tests. I can't remember specifics, but I do remember thinking 'Oh, cool!' That's the only time I've used it. Sorry I don't have more experience or memory recall.

its funny i'm sitting here and i'm like ok its strange it turns the water a lovely shade of purple but any contact on skin or clothing you get brown lol :OO hmmm but yeah i definitely will be sharing experiences with it as time goes by I just have to remind myself not to get it on my hands or clothing :OO

You know, I just recalled using this when I had an issue ith water clouding, and it took forever for the water to uncloud, and the water was a nice shade of brown and then as soon as I ran the filter, the water went clean, and no clouding.
This was just a sponge and floss filter, I don't think I had any charcoal in it.

stuff sounds to dangerous for me lol ! :T i sterilize my tanks with a bleach and iodized salt mixture .

My local grocery store sells it in the pet department. Isn't that weird? I haven't seen it anywhere else. I did use it once in my soil based planted tank and it did stain the water really bad but it cleared up pretty fast. I can't remember why I used it or if it worked. Wow I'm not much help am I? :OO

lol that purple water color is cool I have had my local lfs order some for me I will be called when it comes in i never heard of it changing the water brown though only staining the hands and clothing brown the water though turns lovely purple I would think that there are more dangerous chemicals out there to put in the water i know alot of people use pp in their ponds and have no problems as long as it is properly dosed but as they say to each their own

OK, this was a long time ago, back at the end of fall beginning of winter, Nate might vaguely remember, I had an issue, this one tank kept clouding up, I even bleached the tank out, and the next day, it would cloud up.
Well, they sell PP as a cure for water clouding, my guess now, is because it kills whatever bacteria bloom is making the water cloud.
Anywho, it turned the water purple, and then a couple hours later the water turned brown, and then it stayed brown.. Until I turned the filter on, and then the water cleared up, and I never had a bloom in that tank again..
The stuff I used was Clear Water from Jungle.
The end.

Jill just make sure to remove any snails you have in your tank before using it. It will kill them any crustaceans like shrimp etc

| You know it’s time to change the PP solution when it’s looking brown, which shows it’s been exhasted. |
AH-HA!!!
