One thing I have noticed.. putting two males to flare at each other will often cause them to poo.
Like the body is making them dump excess weight in case they have to fight or something.
Also, live brine shrimp, and daphnia have a laxative effect, as does live mosquito larva, I have seen.
I don't know if the froze has the same properties.
I hope he goes poo for you soon.
wildmagiclady - August 8, 2007 05:38 PM (GMT)
Good luck Cody. I hope he pulls through for you.

Looks like my Aristotle... and he has dropsy... been treating it for 2 months to no avail., but he's still with me.
But, hopefully I'm wrong.
wildmagiclady - August 9, 2007 03:11 PM (GMT)
Looks like dropsy to me too Cody. I'm so sorry. Is he pine coned?
Have you tried fasting him for two days? Another treatment is epson salts. I'll have to look up the dosage.
Let us know.
LaBella - August 9, 2007 06:17 PM (GMT)
I don't know, I am not so sure that is dropsy, his whole body doesn't look bloated, just his belly, though I am sure that different kinds of dropsy manifests in different ways
Epsom salt might help, so might getting him to move around, and exercise.
I would drop his water of you haven't already.
Some people will gently squeeze an egg bound female between say a beanie lid, and the wall of the tank, the external pressure helping to get the eggs dropping.
I wonder if this might work for him.
bigphunny - August 9, 2007 08:03 PM (GMT)
Hmmmm I don't think its dropsy, he has not pinceoned and its been 7days now and todya he is active and hangin out at the top of the tank and gets all exited when i go over, i have fasted him for days he hates me right now :P , he got bigger after I finally fed him yesterday, so I knwo its constipation, but what to do, i added soem aquarium salt to his water, but no epson. I'm not sure what to do i'm scared to massage him
Greentetra - August 9, 2007 08:19 PM (GMT)
The CT in my avie had the same problem. Do try some epsom salt in his tank. 1tsp per gallon.
Within two days of putting in epsom salt my boy was back to normal. Hope he pulls through :)

I had a friend who did that with one of her males that got constipation and it worked. Just very gently massaging his tummy with your forefinger and thumb.
Poor Sunny. I'm glad to hear he isn't pine coned though. I hate dropsy!
Try the Epsom Salts and the massage, I think it will help the poor guy.
bigphunny - August 9, 2007 09:28 PM (GMT)
thanks Sherry and everyone for your help, well i just masseged him and I that was traumatizing for me  I felt like I was going to pop him any second, it was a very weird feeling  i gave him clean water and then added bettafix and some IAL, is thatgood, i figured it woudl help since i was just touching him???
LaBella - August 11, 2007 03:34 AM (GMT)
I would still add some epsom salt to his water.
Hopefully something jiggled loose.
Have you trying letting him flare up with another male?
bigphunny - August 11, 2007 04:07 AM (GMT)
Hey Bella, yes I have kept a male by him and he flares and stuff, i keep feeding him de-shelled peas and he eats happily, but he looks bigger and he see through almost in teh stoamch area  ,I think I will stop with the peas, I have not got epsom salt, i will get some today when I go out and try that, where can i get epsom Salt???
LaBella - August 11, 2007 04:22 AM (GMT)
Look in the RX section, around foot care.
bigphunny - August 11, 2007 04:44 AM (GMT)
Ok well since I posted 30 minutes I went to duanereade and picked up som all natural epsom salt, I couldn't stand looking at him so I just had to go even though its past midnight, thank God I live in NYC and nothing closes  ok so he is in a 2.5 gallon but I lowered the water to about 1 gallon since he has been ill, and I just added TSP of epsom salt :D now what do i do next?, when Do I treat again? should I massage him again tomorrow? thanks for everyones Help, I just really love this Guy he is the first Betta I ever had shipped to me , my first HM, and The Daddy of my First HM spawn  so he means alot to me.
LaBella - August 11, 2007 06:10 AM (GMT)
Maintain that, but when you change the water, make it about 1/4th a teaspoon, unless someone else has a suggestion.. and I would massage again tomorrow.
I just wish there was some way to give a fish an enema.
East Coast Bettas - August 11, 2007 01:40 PM (GMT)
Sounds like you're doing everything you can BP. Just keep the faith and wait. Just be careful using too much epsom like belle said. it will dehydrate him. But I believe Epsom salts is also a natural laxitive in and of itself so... hopefully that will get him going.
bigphunny - August 11, 2007 06:42 PM (GMT)
hey everyone, he is still huge Today :( but he has built a nice Bubble nest :P and he is still active and flaring ;) i can see a long poo cord inside his stomach now  , I have not seen that, so that looks like a good sign :D hopefully it will leave his body and he will recover, :T
LaBella - August 12, 2007 04:30 PM (GMT)
Never has a poo discussion been so riviting.
You know I have been keeping Ma Belle abreast of the Sunny situation, right?
I hope he goes for you soon, and the fact he is active and flaring is good.
Maybe another massage?
wildmagiclady - August 12, 2007 09:18 PM (GMT)
YAY! I'm still pulling for you and Sunny, Cody!

bigphunny - August 13, 2007 02:19 AM (GMT)

davenia7 - August 13, 2007 01:10 PM (GMT)
Anyone wanna give Aristotle a squeeze... Maybe that's the cure all including for dropsy we've all been looking for??? A HUG!!!
but honestly... he's pineconed.. so not looking good.
C'est la vie!!
East Coast Bettas - August 13, 2007 02:11 PM (GMT)
I think everyone wants the miracle cure for dropsey. You ask anyone and I think yuo will find that they will say it's the most devistating thing to see your betta come down with.
Congrat with the big poo Cody.. Just please refrain from any poo pics in the update. :OO
davenia7 - August 13, 2007 03:16 PM (GMT)
Dropsy question:
I've never had dropsy in my filtered tanks... has anyone had a dropsy occurrence in a cycled, filtered tank?
I've only seen it occur in unfiltered, uncycled tanks that require 100% changes.
If we can figure out the cause.. maybe we can engineer a cure.
East Coast Bettas - August 13, 2007 04:45 PM (GMT)
Yes I did, in a 37 gallon planted tank. My first male Crowntail came down with it. And Dropsey is not really a disease itself but the effect of the kidneys shutting down due to another cause. That's why you must first find what is causing it and then get the kidneys to function again. That's why only a few rare instances, the fish has bounced back because it was caught and cured in time, allowing the kidney to regain enough function to support life.
davenia7 - August 13, 2007 08:01 PM (GMT)
so, what would boost kidney function?
humans use cranberry juice.
will bettas eat cranberries? would they be toxic to them, ya think?
East Coast Bettas - August 13, 2007 08:25 PM (GMT)
Nothing. It like a person that is dying. Towards the end they lose all their renal functions. You would basically have to make a dialasys machine for a betta to support it's life functions at that point.
davenia7 - August 14, 2007 01:35 AM (GMT)
ECB, get to designing then!!!
East Coast Bettas - August 14, 2007 03:15 AM (GMT)
No
No No...
Not since the betta defibulator fiasco.
LaBella - August 14, 2007 05:54 AM (GMT)
WHOOOO HOOOO!!!!
We got POO!!!!
That is wonderful, it really is. Now he needs to get the rest of the poo out!!
Ma Belle.. well, she just shakes her head and says at least it isn't dog poo, lol. But she is happy that he seems to be on the mend as well.
MObetta122 - August 14, 2007 06:14 PM (GMT)
Im wondering if maybe it is a age related illness?? seems like the only fish i have had come down with dropsy were very old 2 yeaRS +
:flower
jdwoodschild - August 14, 2007 08:58 PM (GMT)
They might be more prone? Like when flu season comes around, children and the elderly get the flu shots first because they are the most likely to come down with it. Might be the same with bettas, because fry are the most prone to velvet, and maybe older bettas are more prone to dropsy.
Newdayrising - August 15, 2007 04:55 AM (GMT)
hiya cody I hope your guy is doing alot better :flower
wildmagiclady - August 15, 2007 12:33 PM (GMT)
Hope to hear from you Cody and give us some good news on Sunny.
^_^
bigphunny - August 15, 2007 08:54 PM (GMT)
Hey eveyone, well sunny is still really boated but he is Going poo :OO so i'm not sure what to do should I keep treating him? i'm not sure what should be done
LaBella - August 16, 2007 01:18 AM (GMT)
Keep treating him.
I am hoping that he hasn't decided to dropsy, because of the pressure on his kidneys, and because of the toxins from not pooing all that time running through his bloodsystem.
If you have some Maracyn 2, give it to him, or some Tetracycline, or maracyn TC, just in case.
If he is deciding to dropsy, this might head it off at the pass.
I would continue with the epsom salts, and if you have started feeding him again, do the pea thing, or some frozen daphnia or brine shrimp.
bigphunny - August 16, 2007 07:48 AM (GMT)
"sleepsick Sunny has Pineconed today :worried so he is A gonner, I guess the stress was just to much for his kidneys :( , but thanks all for the Kind words and advice, it was so nice to know you all for sending him Good vibes.
wildmagiclady - August 16, 2007 12:42 PM (GMT)
:(
I'm so sorry Cody.
davenia7 - August 16, 2007 12:59 PM (GMT)
I'm sorry.
Some live with dropsy for days... mine's had it for 2 months and is still around and still eating, if that gives you hope??
LaBella - August 16, 2007 04:39 PM (GMT)
 I am sorry, I had a not too good feeling when you said he was pooing, but still bloated.
Like Davinia said, some have lived with it for months, and some have actually gotten through it.
I had a fish who pineconed after a heater malfunctioned, and because I caught it as soon as he started to pinecone, he recovered, although he had SBD until he died.
This has happened to me a couple times.
I have a female I am treating right now, that was starting to pinecone last night
Now, I am not going to say she is cured, but she certainly is not as bloated as she was.
