yep, they certainly do work their way into your heart. Sad thing is you don't even know it until it's too late. Then you notice it's gettign hard to walk through your room without avoiding them.

Ah yes. You don't even realize it until it's too late to "save" yourself.
VT's are what got me into bettas too. Five years ago on August 29, fell in love with a little royal/red/turq multi at a lfs. I spent all my money on buying what I thought was a good home for him (a betta hex) and a little silk plant.
Unfortunately he died a month later of ammonia poisoning when we went on vacation for two weeks. :( That winter I bought myself a turq. VT to put in my 10 gallon. He lived happily for three years. ^_^ Shortly after that I found my first fish forum. There I learned about the proper care and breeding of bettas. :hawaiibanana My knowledge has since grown and I'm getting ready to breed. ^_^ It's so sad that VTs are looked down on so much now that we have other tail types. :(

Yep it only takes one fish. And for mostly everyone the first fish is a veil. Beautiful little guy!

Good thread topic, I am pinning it, and we can all post the betta that started out addictions.
If you don't have a picture of him, I know I would still like to read his story.

The betta that started my addiction was Phich. My mother brought home a 1.5 hex tank, half full with murky water the color of coffee.. In the water, there was a darker brown spot moving.
She tell me, someone gave me this fish, it is one of those fighting fish, I need you to go online, and look up how to take care of it, I told her you were the critter person, you wouldn't mind...
Well I knew some things off the bat, like the fish needed to get out of that water, and that tap water was no good for at least 24 hours, and the supermarket was closing very soon.
So I ran there, bout 2 gallons of spring water, and changed the water right away.
Yup... no acclimating or anything.
And the dark brown dot in the coffee colored water turned out to be a red fish, THAT is how nasty the water was.
So, I go online, and started my research..
INSTANT addiction!!!
At convention, I was telling people how my mother is to blame for this betta obession, and she was denying it, until I told her..
The look on her face was priceless as she said, OMG!! It IS my fault!!!

Believe it or not, he was a solid red fish, but the flash brought out all the hidden green wash in him.

yup that is how i got originally into bettas too. My sister has a male veiltail called Sushi and since I could not afford to have a cat at the time she suggested I get a betta. My first veiltail was a bright blue one I named Al after Al McKinnia my favorite St. Louis Blues Hockey player. Unfortunately I did not know much about bettas back then and he contracted fungus an died. I then had a female veiltail who was purple named Violet. She succomed to the same death by fungus. But know I know more about bettas I know how to care for them better. I found this site when I adopted Zeke ( a veiltail) from someone from Craigs list who could no longer care for him. I discovered this site when I had Zeke and came here for advice back then. Bella was so helpful to me with advice when Zeke got sick. I did not even know there were different types of tails till I came here to this site. But veiltais rule they do!
