Title: In honor of VAM

LaBella - August 1, 2007 09:37 PM (GMT)
I was at PetSmart today, and decided to bring home the worst looking guy there.
He is skinny, shredded, and pitiful and needs a name

Awww poor guy. Can wait to see how he progresses in a clean bowl and a loving home.

Yeah, I was planning on doing a day by day update on him, with pics.
So far so good, he is acclimating well, and have eaten for me.
But he is in bad shape, so I really don't hold out much hope, though I am going to do my best for him.
He is going into the nicest 1 gallon in the house. And I am going to give him a wisteria bunch to chill out on..
Now, I was planning on going to my mothers this weekend, so he is going to have to come with, being in intensive care.
I have had healthier bettas die overnight, so hopefully tomorrow morning, he'll still be with us.

Awesome idea Belle. I'll love following his photos. Poor little guy! But now he's a Lucky Dude to be cared for by you!
;)

As of now, he is still holding on, but who knows for how much longer.
I have put an under tank reptile heater under his tank.
It doesn't get VERY warm, but I think the little bit of extra heat would probably make him a little more comfortable.
He has also been medicated.
I'll be back during the daylight with an update on this guy.

Vam is still alive!!!
Whooo hooo!!!!!!
I'll have pics of hi, Later today.
And yeah, I have decided that Vam is going to be his name, lol.

He did not eat, which is not good, and he has gone from bottom hanging to top floating, though he is level..
I don't know what to make of that.
I just hope he pulls through.

As you can see, he looks worse, and after I put him in his new tank, I realized that he had not eaten, I have been offering him food, and he just is not eating.
I have melafix and quick cure in his water, and I have started force feeding him gel tek tetracycline.
The reason for that is not for the antibacterial properties, but because the gel is nutrient rich and he needs some kind of food in him.
Every half hour or so, I have been giving him on drop.
I don't actually know how much is getting into him, but I am trying.
I don't know..
He is lack luster, like the fight has gone out of him.
There really is not much that I can do if he is not willing to fight with me.

I am about to feed him one more drop, and then go and gas up my car.. (middle of the night is best, trust me), and when I come back, I'll give him another drop, and I just hope he hold on.

OK, I came back, and he was alive still, but I got distracted by the flash of a run away hamster, and after I caught and secured it, I went back to check on Vam, and he was gone.
I am upset and angry at this, because this fish was starved.
I think he got to the point that he could not eat.
I have rescued dogs like that, and it is always a horribly long and slow road.
The problem as I see it is this.
he was in a shipment, and I honestly don't think they feed the bettas at this store, though I will find out.
That is the only reason I can give for his debilitated condition.. that he was not fed, and he was not for a long while.
We keep our fish in a constant state of condition by our feeding methods.
I don't know too many people with more than 3 bettas that count out 3-4 pellets.
Many get a small pinch, especially with Hikari or Atisons..
When these fish are sent here, they are sent in a state of condition, to get them through the shipping, rebagging, and then the time they are spent on the shelves.
This fish was not fed OR did not eat in so long, he could not eat. That is a LONG time with these fish, I am saying at least a month, to 6 weeks.
I have only seen one other fish this thin, my mothers super delta Almond. And he was not QUITE as bad off as poor Vam..
Oh well, I am going to take him back tomorrow/later today, and see if I can get a replacement Vam...
