blu3_sTr3akz - July 15, 2007 08:27 AM (GMT)
i was wondering if anyone would know if i bred a copper purple male hmpk to a traditional pk female what would i see in the offsprings... does anyone know?

I am not sure if you are asking about color or tail type.
If you are talking to tail type, you will see a lot of what we call transitional PKs
They are fish that are somewhere between the two tail types.
You will more likely than not see in the offspring, the sloping anal fin with the extended point at the rear of the anal, but the tail types and the dorsals as well will run the gamut.
There is a misconception with trad PKs, that they have only 2 rays.
This is inaccurate.
They can have up to 4 rays... the main difference between the trad and the HMPK, or more accurately, the Asymetrical Show Plakat in their tails is the trads are to have either rounded tails, or spade tails.
There are differences in the dorsals as well, with the trad having a semicircle type dorsal, and the ASP having amore extended dorsal, much like what is called for in HMs...
As an aside, I am for a moriendum on officially making the symetrical PK the only HMPK.
OK, tangent over..
Sooo.. if finnage was the point of your post, I hope I have helped, but if you meant color, I have no idea, you forgot to tell us the color of the female...
The only thing I can say with color is that you are likely to have fish that have metallic sheen.

oops i'm sorry her color is i would say black body blue dorsal red anal fins and red tail fin wid blue irrids male i was wondering with both tail and color what i would see they male does have the extended anal hopefully that gets passed on...

Well, she is a multi, and no matter what male you breed her to, you are likely to get multi's.
You could get some clean solid colored fish, but aside from multi's you are likely to get bi colors..
And this is no matter if the male is a blue irrids or a purple copper.

i guess i didnt do my research i'd thought if i cross 2 colors i'd get something in between like the colors would blend...i guess u cant breed certain bettas like that unless there is exceptional colors that i need to know...maybe you could help labella..

LaBella - July 20, 2007 04:53 AM (GMT)
Well, if it were that easy, we could breed red and blue bettas and get purples, lol.
I certainly would be glad to help any way I can. genetics can be a confusing thing, sometimes.
I still haven't got my head wrapped around all the terms and abbreviations and such like.

it's cool atleast you do help where you can you're prolly the most helpful person in this forum i'm not saying that other people aren't as helpful but you do give as much advice as you can i just want to remind you that all the advice you give do help and is appreciated ;)

Thanks, I am to please.
This is a place where I thnk everyone should be able to go to and have fun, and ask the stupid questions without fear of getting dumped on.
This is also a place where we should be able to come together and give advice, and answer those questions.
I know, though, that I am not the only one here with an opinion about things, and I know my way is for everyone, so I wish others would chime in more often..
I am not even the most experienced, or prolific breeder on ths board, and I have gotten ideas from others here and incorperated them into my routine.
So no one should be embarassed to share their thoughts on how to do things, what they do, and why they do them the way they do.
In the long run, this could help us all become better betta people.

See I try to contribute but La Bella always beats me to it :P

If I were you, I would find a nice metallic female, either blue or copper for the purple copper. The irrid male if he is pure irrid, I would try to contact one of the breeders that show in that class in the IBC. Right now there is a big push to keep metallics out of the irridescent fish lines because there are so few and far between... even though some argue that metallic can be bred out. As for the multicolor female, what belle said. You could get alot of anything. Color genetics can be very frustrating, like when you spawn an orange fish to a yellow one and get all dark red fish.

LaBella - July 20, 2007 03:06 PM (GMT)
Well, depending on where the irrid came from, it is usually safe to assume the fish is not pure, which is why I didn't even go there.
You know, even an I agree does well, then it doesn't look like I am making things up as I go along, lol.

i email aiwen about this particular spawn that i'm working with since she has bred a trad multicolor pk male to copper pk female and i've seen a picture of the offspring on her site its an interesting color though not flared she said she has only 1 survived and the colors she describe sounds really nice to my standards...i have so far maybe somewhere above 20 lil guys going on to their second week coming this friday...seen about 6 that are outgrowing the rest i feed them twice a day morning before i leave to work thats at 6:45 a.m and when i get home from work at 4:30 p.m they are looking really healthy except for 1 lil guy i've noticed that his spine is kinda bent maybe its just me being paranoid cause he does swim normal just looks like he has a kink but the rest are fine...many of them are small even prolly i would say 5 are runts the others are in between i give them atleast 2 to 3 syringe full of bbs maybe some are picky but whatever it is...i do hope they all make it cause this entire whole time i've been keeping my eye on them and i'm kinda exhausted i dont know how you guys do it with multiple spawnings i'm pretty sure you guys are all used to it....hopefully i get better and get a bigger batch next time i restart on this spawn i tried but wasnt successful because the male ate all the eggs..my 2 royal blue pks fighting strain the male is really aggressive...hopefully he'll come thru for me this time so i can cross my multi copper to royal blue and see what i can get with the f3's...... :D

LaBella - July 27, 2007 03:16 PM (GMT)
Sounds very interesting, like you have a line planned there.

blu3_sTr3akz - July 28, 2007 03:44 AM (GMT)
actually i dont really have a line to plan on i just want to breed and have my own unique colors if i can succeed...well x fingers hopefully they turn out something worth the while but in actuality breeding bettas has made it worthwhile it keeps me on my toes and anxious of what awaits...
