Beautiful pairs! Why do the pretty looking males eat all the babies? <_<
SandyMushCowgirl - July 4, 2007 04:07 AM (GMT)
Thanks.. I haven't a clue... I sure wish I knew though. I hate it when they do that. <_<
LaBella - July 4, 2007 05:21 AM (GMT)
Because they are perverse.
That is why they eat the eggs, and the babies, and chew the females, or suicide.
Maybe next time, he is young, could have been new daddy nerves.
SandyMushCowgirl - July 4, 2007 11:49 AM (GMT)
LOL.. You're probably right. I believe some of them have a completely weird sense of humor in which they find it fun to torture their owners with fry eating, egg eating and everything else..
Yeah, that's what I figure. He was doing pretty good taking care of the eggs and the few fry he did have, but I think when they started getting ready to free-swim it was too much for him to handle, so he ate them instead...
East Coast Bettas - July 4, 2007 02:03 PM (GMT)
I love these guys! Copper red plakats were my first plakats, so I have a soft spot for them. Hope these guys spawn more for you and don't munch this time!
wildmagiclady - July 4, 2007 03:00 PM (GMT)
I love them too! I'm actually getting a pair from her. We're doing juvie trades!
:WOU
SandyMushCowgirl - July 4, 2007 03:19 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I sure hope he won't munch again... Or I'll have to...... :chair :chair :chair :bonk :bonk :lipseal
Well, I hope you'll like them... :D

They're pretty little ones!
SandyMushCowgirl - July 6, 2007 05:00 PM (GMT)
Thanks nutty. Unfortunately though, Champagne passed away this morning. I am so upset... She was apparently eggbound. :( :( :( :( :( :(
LaBella - July 6, 2007 09:17 PM (GMT)
 Sorry to hear that.
Are you sure she was eggbound?
Did you see that pic of Manny after he munched?
And eggbound female will lok like that.
Sometimes they literally pop, and leave a crater in their abdomin.
I just ask this, because in the off chance that it wasn't that, you can keep an eye on the others in the spawn.
SandyMushCowgirl - July 7, 2007 04:01 AM (GMT)
Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's what it was. Her abdomen didn't "pop", but there were a bunch of eggs laying around where she was and she had eggs coming out of her ovipositor (sp?). So, I'm pretty sure that's what it was. I am keeping a close eye on the others though, just in case.
LaBella - July 7, 2007 04:18 AM (GMT)
Well, eggbound means that the female is so packed with eggs, that they can't come out. That is why some females pop, or they rupture internally.
I don't know what that could have been, it doesn't sound like anything that I am familiar with.
I am sorry though, you lost her, she was very nice.
SandyMushCowgirl - July 7, 2007 04:25 AM (GMT)
Well, I figure she must have been so full of eggs that when they finally did come out it was too late. If that's not the case, then I haven't a clue what it was.
Thanks. She was certainly my favorite of the female juvies. And she was just getting another set of rays. :(
LaBella - July 7, 2007 06:09 AM (GMT)
Maybe, that seems a little plausable.
SandyMushCowgirl - July 7, 2007 04:39 PM (GMT)
Yeah. It's a shame that we'll never really know exactly what it was though.
East Coast Bettas - July 7, 2007 07:41 PM (GMT)
I am so sorry for your loss, she was a very pretty female.
I have had a similar situation happen to me.. where an overly egy female died after releasing her eggs. If you think about it in medical terms, it's like someone dying in a car crash after they are pulled out and the pressure is removed. The pressur from the eggs internally caused a hemmorage. Once the eggs and pressure are released, they bleed to death. Sorry that had to happen to your little girl. :(
LaBella - July 7, 2007 11:34 PM (GMT)
See, I was thnking along the lines of an internal rupture released enough pressure to allow the eggs to spill.
I know this might not be helping you, and we don't keep going back to it to hurt you, we are just trying to help others understand what could have possibly happened, in case something similar happens to them.
SandyMushCowgirl - July 8, 2007 06:20 AM (GMT)
Yeah, I think that's probably what happened ECB.
I understand that LaBella. It's good for people to know what could possibly happen to their bettas and be somewhat prepared for it.
wildmagiclady - July 8, 2007 08:33 PM (GMT)
Aaaawww Sandy, I'm so sorry.

Janelle. The package arrived today, the kids are great. I just love them. I didn't ask you. How old are they anyway?
Thank you. :D
SandyMushCowgirl - July 13, 2007 12:20 AM (GMT)
Glad they got there safe and sound.. And I'm glad you like them. Their hatch date is 4/10/07, so they've just turned 3 months old. :D

These kids are soooo darling and fiesty! I just have to say though, they are so little! I thought you'd tell me they were 2 months old!
I'm not trying to hurt your feelings. They are gorgeous and have already branched again and have fabulous form. Thier being tiny makes them so adorable I just hope they grow a lot more. I love watching them though. So much so I put them on my desk. They're precious! :D
they are about 3/4 of inch from nose to caudal tip..
SandyMushCowgirl - July 15, 2007 05:14 AM (GMT)
LOL.. Oh, you won't hurt my feelings... I think part of the reason they are so small is because their mom was from a mini line. I actually prefer them being small compared to the regular sized plakats. I'm glad they've branched again. I'm eager for the rest to develop another set of rays. They're working on them..
