I was wondering can anyone recommend another species of fish that would do well in a community tank, and is "smart" like bettas or have different personalities like bettas do. I'm just curious. :ninja

Any type of cichlid. I prefer Angelfish and German Rams for community tanks.

What size of tank?
For a small tank like a 2-5 gal. what about a dwarf puffer or two for a 5 gal.?
Medium tanks like 20-40 gal. angelfish are really funny.
Big tank like 55 gal. plus, African cichlids
Monster tank like 110 plus, South American cichlids, ie. Oscars.
Most personable fish that I know of don't play really well with others.
Nearly all fish will eat anyone that will fit in their mouths.
Ironically some of my most personable fish have been my synodontis catfishes and my dojo loach before his leap of death.

Angelfish need 10 gals. each once full sized... please keep that in mind.
Their "size" is measure in height not length from the top of the top fin to the bottom of the bottom fin.
Also angels do need IMMACULATE water. as in, no ammonia or nitrites ever, and nitrates below 20 ppm.
They also need temps over 80 degrees and generally don't play well with others, often not even their own kind.

Puffers of all kinds are smart and curious fish. They are fun :)

I always thought they were so cool looking and smart! I'd so love to have a big salt water tank.. too much money though. :(

I vote for goldies. I had one so smart I could be sitting at the opposite end of the open topped tank and call out her name and she would swim over and look at me like " You called"

Eels are really smart. I used to have a Tire Track Eel and a Peacock Eel...smartest fish I've ever kept.
And all Cichlids are considered to be the smartest fish on Earth.

Yeah I have been told with Angelfish it is better to keep them in odd numbers 1-3-5-7-etc. I used to have some in a 37 gallon tank and if something hapened to one to even the numbers out, sure enough there was a marked rise in aggression. Go figgure.
