Title: Question For Breeders
Jahosacat - June 11, 2007 10:26 PM (GMT)
I'm curious; please tell me if I'm being obnoxious.....
I read about people who breed Bettas and have large and multiple spawns aging. What do you do with all of the babies? Where do you sell them? Maybe I'm wrong, but, it seems like there aren't that many US and Canadian sellers on Aquabid. I see some locally bred Angels, but, no Bettas in the LFS around me.
I love to look at your pix! And I admire your patience and dedication to raising healthy babies!

My LFS's in town told me that if I give them warning, they buy mine from me.
Then again, I've spent a few grand there in the last year.

I can't say that is too much of a problem for me.
For one, none of my spawns seem to be very large, and I have friends whop are breeders that want my extras.. And there is also the betta pals program.
When I do get to where I have something worthy of selling, I will sell them through AB...
Though there doesn't seem to be a lot of US/CA breders, there are a fair decent number of them, however they come and go in cycles.. If I see something listed by one breeder, I know usually not to look for anything from them for another 2 months or so.
There are exceptions..
Also, many of us do have LFS that are willing to take our extras off our hands.
Should all of that fail, there is always Freecycle... Though I would rather the betta pals program.

Thanks for the gracious replies! I'm very happy to see that LFS are buying some from you. I keep hoping to see locally raised Bettas......

If you are approaching an LFS, remind them that locally raised fish do better in local water.
Stores get a fair decent amount of loss from the fish just not being acclimated to the water, and the fish die faster, and sooner, because they are Thai fish, and just can't handle the water in their new local.
Often, when they get to the US (usually in Fla.), they are put in new water, no accimating, and shipped out across the country.
That water thing is one of the reasons stores have such a huge loss in the first couple days of recieving a new shipment, and also why many fish die within a few days of coming home.
The store either did a water change on the cups, or baggies or whatever, OR the fish got the water change when they got home, and the fish just didn't adjust well to the water.
But local bred fish will do better on local water.
Which is a good selling point.
