So, this weekend... my final tank to be converted to sand will be done. The bettas will be getting their "beach" digs this weekend.
I hope they like it as well as all my other fish do...
And as much as I do for that matter.
If I can steal a camera, I might take some before and after shots.
Furthermore...
I have started to buy supplies for the betta spawn I'm going to have this SUMMER.
What am I crossing?
Plato
Black VT male with Red fins...
Measurement including fins is over 6 inches.
Diotima
Black CT female with red fins...
Measurement including fins is about 2 inches.
She's a lot smaller, but I've been told that that is good.
I got IAL on order, (Amy Lim on ebay) so I have to test it with my water to make sure my pH doesn't go too low...but that is my intention.
I've been thinking of moving to sand.
How do you and your fish like it? Do you have any live plants? Do they like it? Does it change the water chemistry any? ^_^
me too. How do you do that. Switch to sand I mean. How do you clean sand of betta and snail poo when you do water changes? I have marbles right now and I take them out and rinse them off. I know snails like sand but i did not know bettas did too. See I just learned something. Doesn't the sand irritate their gills? just curious. Also how many pounds would I need for a two 2.5 gallon tanks?

You'd love it.

ow do you and your fish like it?
Me and My fish love it. Especially the cory cats.
Do you have any live plants?
Yes, I have them planted in little clay pots with aquatic soil topped with gravel to weigh it down.
Do they like it?
Plants love plant soil.

Depends on the sand - Aragonite sand hardens the water... this I use in my Malawi Cichlid tank... Silica sand (pool filter sand) only adds silicates to the water... at about 6 weeks you WILL have a diatomic algae bloom, but it does go away on its own in about 2 weeks.

You switch it by...
Turning off the filters.
Removing fish.
Use a fish net to remove the old gravel/ rocks/ or whatever.
Rinse the sand till it runs clear in a bucket.
Lower sand one scoop or cup at a time into the tank.
Do a 50% WC.
Place your old gravel in a new rinsed out knee-high and set it on top of your sand for about 2 weeks.

Here is the best part of sand, you don't have to gravel vac in the sand... you pass the vac about 1/4 inch over the sand and remove the poo and then you stir the sand with a wooden spoon and then do a WC, this prevents sulphur build up under the sand. ... poo sits on the top of the sand... sand is too tightly packed for it to sink into it.
I have marbles right now and I take them out and rinse them off.
You won't have to do this.
You I know snails like sand but i did not know bettas did too. See I just learned something.
Yeah, I haven't tried it yet but i can't see why they wouldn't.
Doesn't the sand irritate their gills? just curious.
Nope, you don't put them in until it has settled... usually take a little bit of time. But if you rinsed it enough, shouldn't have a problem with it.
Also how many pounds would I need for a two 2.5 gallon tanks?
One $7 bag of pool filter sand from lowes would fill that tank. You would need like 2 solo cups worth... I keep my sand bed shallow at about an inch deep. Less chances of sulfuric acid pockets. Also, snails turn the bed too.
Thanks Davenia that is a great help and thanks for answering all my questions. I am going to have to do a water change this weekend. I will probably do Sunti's tank then . He will need it then with all the extra snail do do in there with him. He has got all three snail in there with him while Suchin gets treated for her illness. I will have to wait to do Suchin's till she is done with her parasite clear treatment. I don't want any of those little bugs down in the new sand or any left over med to irritate my snail kids. Yup the people on the snail site I belong to say snails like the sand. they like to burrow in it.
