Title: Got Two New Apple Snails
bettaqueen - May 29, 2007 06:56 PM (GMT)
I just got two new apple snails. A gold and a black. the gold's name is Sushi and is in with Suchin (my female) She loves it . I often will find her sitting next to it on the marbles keeping it company. It is so cute. The black one's name is Gary ( like spongebob's pet) . He is in with Sunti. Sunti is not bothering him but rather ignores him or observes him from afar. couple of questions fellow snail owners. I know they will eat left over fish food, algae in the tank , fresh veggies etc. What does using ial in the tank do to them? Is it helpful? Do any of you use liquid calcium with them? I also heard they do not eat algae wafers -true or false oh snail gurus. I got a feeling I do not need calcium . I use city water which is probably pretty hard. I use 1/2 tsp salt per gallon and they seem o.k. Any ideas folks?

I'm excited for you! Apple snails are neat. I had some in a 55 about 10 years ago. They will eat pretty much anything, including algae wafers. It's amazing how fast they can detect food and find it. I've even seen them travel upside down on the water surface to get at food that was floating. The calcium is for their shells, which I'm sure you figured out. If your calcium in the water is low they just won't produce much shell. If you notice that the new shell growth is dramaticly thinner then go ahead and add calcium. Seeing they are in small tanks with not many other roommates to bop them around the thinner shells aren't as critical.
I used to let them crawl onto my finger. They would taste test me. Weird feeling! Have fun with them!

I know they are so cute. I heard somewhere to get a bird cuttle bone and add it for the calcium. I got one at petsmart for $1.50 and broke it up and added it to the filter next to the filter cartridge. They are fun to watch. I think Sunti has decided he likes his new room mate too. I noticed him swimming beside Gary watching him yesterday. Sunchin likes to lay on the marbles next to Sushi. I got them some shrimp pellets last night too and they do scarf them down quick

Oh I am bad . I ended up getting another snail. A ivory apple snail. Named her Angel. Got to looking at Gary the other day and decided he looked more like an Oreo cookies ( black shell with slight white stripe at the bottom) so he got renamed Oreo :OO :OO I also got a cuttle bone ( bird kind ) from pet smart for $1.49 and broke it up and added to the filter chamber in front of the filter cartridge. I joined applesnail.net. a few people said the cuttle bone would work but a couple said it was not enough calcium and I need to add calcium discs or liquid calcaium. what you think ? I am afraid to put too much calcium in with the bettas.

If you bought a prepared "snail" food, they normally have added calcium. Between that and the cuttlebone, I think they would get a sufficient amount of calcium.
I've got six coming and should be here Wednesday or Thursday. :D

Now, did you say you switched from the spring water to aging your tap water? Your tap probably has some calcium in it. The added calcium in the water won't hurt the bettas. It will actually help buffer your water and make the pH a little stable. Ammonia also won't be as toxic. Not by a lot, but some.
I love the name Oreo! You should see if you can get your phone to get some pictures of them I would love to see them! They sound sooo cute!

I think I got 2 or 3 apple snails still in my tank. I need to get ride of it. I prefer zebra spixi snails because they are smaller. (I still got a bunch zebra spixi snail.) ^_^ You want it betta4me? :D

thanks Nutty, yes I did switch to aged tap water with some Prime in it. I stopped the added salt to the water for the snails. I will have to buy some liquid calcium to add to the water. I tried using a people calcium tablet like they say you can do and it clouded the water up too much. Bettas4me you ought to get the apple snails Yeevs has. They are so cute to watch

Bring'em on!! I've got 6 empty aquariums stacked on my front porch !!
Actually the ones I have coming are the zebra spixi snails, so I don't want to get too many, lest they start taking lessons from my cories. Then I'll have a dozen tanks filled with cories and snails. :OO :OO
I've already got 110 cories and 40+ eggs waiting to hatch. I may get out of the betta business and start "Cories-R-Us", "Snails-R-Us", and "Shrimp-R-Us"!! :OO :OO :OO

I didn't know you had any that you wanted to part with until today. If I had, I surely wouldn't have bought any. I've got 6 coming, how may do you put per tank? I could use a few more as I will have nine tanks set up when I finish. :D
20gal Cory tank, 20 gal Community tank, 3 - 20 gal grow-out tanks, 3 - 10 gal spawning tanks, 10 gal shrimp tank, 104 betta jars

I am going to have to move my two girl apples in with my male in his tank with Sunti while I treat Suchin for a possible parasite infection. They are going to probably breed like rabbits. Oh no!
