Title: My Cory Family

bettas4me - May 25, 2007 04:27 PM (GMT)
Once my corys decided to spawn, they couldn't seem to stop. First spawn = 57 eggs stuck to glass. Decided to wait 24 hrs so they wouldn't be so sticky......Bad Idea.....only 1 left the following day. Saved it and put into net breeder.....It hatched!!!. Two weeks later, an even larger spawn 60 + eggs, I didn't count as I was removing them as soon as she laid them which was about a 3 hour ordeal. 10 days later she laid about 35 eggs, I didn't save any, just let the female bettas have a feast. Three days later, 17 eggs, saved a few of them. For the next three weeks she spawned every three days with anywhere from a half dozen to 20 + each time. I saved some from about 4 or 5 of the spawns and ended up with 107 babies. :WOW: :WOW: :WOW: I ended up taking the few female bettas out and now it's an all cory tank.

Here's the family:

Looks like I'll have a nice sized "shoal" of corys for each of my tanks.

They are by far, my favorite fish.
I love them.... and babies!!!!! WEEEEEEEE!!!

bettas4me - May 25, 2007 09:30 PM (GMT)
I wish I could have gotten better pics, but if I got too close everyone would scatter. LOL Even with these pics, there's quite a few that scooted out of there. I wish they weren't so "skittish". I had just dropped a couple of algae wafers in and everyone was "pigging out" when I took these.

It's been nearly two weeks since the last spawn, so maybe they've slowed down for awhile. I love the fact that they decided to "be fruitful & multiply", just not every three days!!! :OO

I bought 4 when I bought mine and one later died. I've got two males and a female. The female is a good bit bigger than the males. They were all similarly sized when I bought them (about half grown) then suddenly one day I noticed the female had passed up the other guys and was a good bit larger. There are other ways to sex them, but this was the easiest and most obvious way for me.

If I can find them all hanging out together I'll take a pic and post it to show the difference. :D

What cute pix!!!! I love cories! An all cory tank is gonna be amazing !

AiWen - May 27, 2007 01:25 AM (GMT)
What type of cories are they? I just acquired a nice big group of Panda Cories from a local friends(she awesome!) and I can't wait til they get sexually mature. Maybe we can swap in the future :D

To be honest, I'm not real sure of the species. I thought they were "peppered" corys as they were all spotted as juvies just like the young in the pics, but I looked at several pages of pics trying to match up the adults with no luck. There are about as many species of cories as there are plecos. (well only half as many - 140 +) It might be also that many of the pics I was comparing to may not have been sexually mature adults. ????????

Yeah, we'll do a cory swap in the future if you like!!

Haeun - May 27, 2007 06:37 AM (GMT)
Wow, amazing! I am in LOVE with corys, but sadly, I have to admit I have yet to own one.

:) AiWen, let me know if you get babies eventually. I will definitely buy a few!

bettas4me - May 27, 2007 08:40 AM (GMT)
One of the neat things about cories is that they are long lived, with a life expectancy of five to ten years.

I had them on two other occasions many years ago, but only one at a time because the info available at the time never suggested groups of 4 or 5. Sadly they lived a very lonely existance. :( (these guys won't have that problem :D )

AiWen - May 27, 2007 06:59 PM (GMT)
I'm pretty I'll have a good ratio of males and females and of every age and size(all siblings from different spawns)... I first got 6, then 8, and will get 2 more sometime soon. That gives me a wooping total of 16 :coverlaugh

dmarie04 - May 27, 2007 10:07 PM (GMT)
They are too cute!! Awwww, look at the wittle guys!! I LOVE cories! Sadly, I'm left with only 2 pandas after my 65 gal went through a mini cycle when I had filter problems a couple months ago :( I should really get more. I think it would be nice to, someday, have a cory only tank. :D

bettas4me - May 29, 2007 11:24 AM (GMT)
It seems kinda like a waste to only have cories in the tank since they only use the bottom portion of the tank, but having other fish in the tank subjects the eggs to being eaten before I can remove them. The cories will eat their own eggs eventually, but not as soon as they are laid like the female bettas used to. My red female CT used to really "pig-out" on the cory eggs within seconds of them being deposited on the glass.

Here's a pic of the male & female side by side. See how much bigger the female is. They are the same age too.

GOOD GRIEF!!! They're at it again!! :OO :OO :OO

There are about 22 eggs on the front glass and no telling how many on plants or the other sides of the aquarium. Its so heavily planted, I can't see the other sides. She had taken about a three week rest since last time, so there's no telling how many there will be!! :OMG:

It's neat the way she carries the eggs between her clasped ventrals and then after finding a suitable spot, opens them up and rubs her belly against the glass to adhere them. (not just any spot will do either - sometimes she swims around for 5 min. to find the perfect spot) Thumbsup

Looks like I'll have to break out the net breeder again to save the eggs.
It's funny - they'll eat the eggs, but don't seem to be interested in the fry. Previously my net breeder had become so crowded from the 100+ fry of various ages, that I released them all into the tank. The parents would come across the youngest fry while scavenging for food and would just turn and change directions instead of munching on the fry.

Even one of the oldest fry has started shadowing the males when they're chasing after the female. I guess he's picking up a few pointers. :OO

UP TO 32 EGGS NOW!!! :OMG:

Have you ever tried the plecofanatics forum or planetcatfish forum for identifying them? It'd be interesting since they do have the spots of a peppered cory but the emerald sheen... hmm interesting ^_^

Can't wait til mine start spawning! :Y

Haeun - June 4, 2007 09:08 PM (GMT)
   I will gladly take some off your hands for some e-"green paper".

I can't believe how prolific they are though.

Be careful what you wish for ......... you just might get it!!! :WOU :WOU :OO :OO :WOU :WOU

I love it!!! Really I'm glad that they like their environent so well that they spawn so much. I'm sure I won't have any problem getting rid of the excess stock. I can trade some of them to the LFS for the frozen food that I buy.

They remind me of a pair of pink convicts I had many, many moons ago, they were spawning every time I turned round. There were two LFS back then and I had both fully stocked and my pair was still churning out babies. I finally had to separate them. :OPPS:

Sure, how much do you have?? :OO  :OO

Prolific is definitely the word for this little trio. That day (Monday) I ended up with 44 eggs and on Friday I got another 31. So far I've had about a 97% hatch rate too. Out of that first 110 eggs, only three didn't hatch.

Jahosacat - June 11, 2007 10:32 PM (GMT)
WOW!! I'm impressed and jealous! I love the cuties! I have them in 2 tanks and I'm going to add them to a third when my fav LFS has them on sale again :D

davenia7 - June 12, 2007 06:11 PM (GMT)
Any for sale? Wanna ship em?

Greentetra - June 12, 2007 08:20 PM (GMT)
Somehow I missed this topic.

That's awesome! I need to get myself some more cories, they're the coolest little fish! ^_^

Sure, but I'd have to order some shipping bags though. To be perfectly honest, it would be cheaper to pick up some from your LFS though. You could probably pick up 4 or 5 for the cost of Express shipping.

I'm not trying to talk you out of it, I'll sell you as many as you want, but it would probably cost less to pick them up locally. :D

Well I finally sat down again and slowly went through the pics on Planetcatfish and found my cories!! They are Corydoras Paleatus.

Coryes are awesome! Especially in a nice sized shoal. Another site to check out on coryes is the Catfish Corner...

It hasn't been around for a super long time, but has a wealth of knowledge.
