Title: Mosquito Larvae
Description: Hatch your own

Thought this might be helpful for somebody. ^_^
Every year around May/June I start hatching mosquito larvae for my bettas and other fish. The fish love them and they don't cost anything. In mid to late May I set a bucket with water from the hose out in my backyard. I fill it with about 5 inches of water and toss in a few leaves. Make sure you put the bucket IN THE SHADE! Otherwise it will get too hot and the larvae will die and the water will evaporate too fast. After a few weeks you'll see little wigglers swimming in the bucket. You can harvest them any time you want but just don't forget about them and let them grow into mosquitos. ;) I swear, since I've started doing this the number of mosquito bites I've gotten in my yard has gone down to almost none! So both you and your fish are happy! :lolo:
You can harvest them with a brine shrimp net (Petsmart $1.99) or you can take a pice of cloth and attach it to a piece of wire and bend it into the shape of a net, both work well. I put them into a cup of water from the bucket until I'm done harvesting. Then I strain them through a pice of cloth and put them into a cup of aquarium water and then feed them to the fish. Sometimes you'll get bloodworms hatching in with your mosquito larvae. The fish love them too. If the water in the bucket is getting low you can add some de-chlorinated water to the bucket.
The larvae are disease-free, you don't have to pay lots of money for them, and you'll have live food all summer and into fall. ^_^ If you have lots of fish you can set out several buckets. ;)

dMarie04. I just realized I have a bunch of larvae in my yard where a lot of tupperware seating outside! Hahaha I just catch a bunch in my yard and feed to my bettas. They love it. Those are their chain food. :lolo:

I just told my husband I was going to hatch mosquito larvae and he said, "Gosh, I just kicked over that bucket outside and it was full of them!" Darn man!!! So I guess I'll go throw some water and leaves back in that bucket and wait!

I started doing that last fall. I keep a 5 gal bucket under the gutter outlet to catch water for the plants and noticed one time that it was full of mosquito larvae. Remembering that this was one of their natural foods in the wild, I caught a bunch out and put them in a cup of aquarium water and fed them to my guys with an eye dropper. They all went absolutely wild over them!! I think one of the reasons is the fact that they had to "catch" them, not just open their mouth and let them fall in as with prepared foods. Even fish that had previously been "lazy" eaters suddenly became voracious eaters. They were definitely a hit with my bettas!!!
