Title: 10 Gal Sorority

Jahosacat - April 29, 2007 09:03 PM (GMT)
I'm plotting my next tank and I'd like it to be a sorority tank. How many ladies can I peacefully add to a 10 gal tank? I'd make it a filtered, cycled tank and I'd add all of the ladies at the same time.

Many thanks!

Donna

I know there is a formula to it as far as personal space for the girls But I think most people keep 5 to 6 girls togteher but alwasy more than three so there not so aggressive, and have lots of plants and hiding palce for them Thumbsup I just spawned two of my babies cuz I want to start a soroity tank and i want to just keep all the sisters togteher. :D

My girls, I use the same theories as cichlid keeping... overcrowd bc then they can't target one another... lose sight of one fish and get distracted a lot.
But, I over filter and have tons of plants and hidey holes.
I would put at least 7 in there, up to 10 depending on filtration... but that is me.

I have 5 in my 10 gal and am thrilled to pieces with them. I have tons of plants and hidey holes and added them all to the tank at the same time. Squabbles lasted about a day or two and now everyone is fat and happy. In fact, although I have tons of hidey holes etc I typically find them holed up together.

Good luck with yours. I loff mine

I have 3 in my 10 right now and will be putting 5 more more this week. I would think with proper filtration, etc, you could easily keep 8 and maybe even 10, but I don't think more than 10.

For juvies, yes but then you need to change a lot of water. Less then 10 is the good. 3 to 6 is great. 1 is superb! :D

lots and lots of plants......5 to 6 comfortably (no less than 3, unless its 1). I'd not do more than that unless you plan to do lots and lots of water changes as well.

LOL :OO I didn't put 2 actually. hahaha Mostly two will fight even they are girls. LOL I think either one will become a transformation from a female to a male.

Many thanks for the replies! To have proper filtration should I get a filter rated for a 20 - 30 gal? I'm not sure how many ladies I want to get yet. I think that will depend a little on LFS supplies....

The recommended gallonage is not an accurate way to determine filter size. for example, I have 3-"20" gal. filters on my 10 gal. betta tank... one in each section... but I start them turned all the way down and baffled till they get used to the current and turn it up as we go.
Eventually, I have all 3 going at full speed.
But I use gallons/hour(gph) to determine what amount of filtration is appropriate.
My bettas get a 4x/ hour turnover rate. That's 40 gph actually flow.
My other fish get 10+x/hour but not the bettas.
So, you need to look at the filter and determine whether you are getting 4x/ hour turnover. 5x/ hour would be a "safe" over-filtration for the females... but that's just my opinion.

FYI, I have 600 gph on my 55 gal. cichlid tank. 120 gph on my 5 gal. saltwater tank. 350 gph on my angelfish tank. And 12 gph on my 2 gal. fem. betta tank.
But I'm a freak!!!
:D
