Ok so I Need advice on how to approach this for some reason my Steel/marble pair has had Fin rot since i got them, well When I first got them about 6 weeks ago I put them in 1 gallon plastic jars and I i wanted the male to get to halfmoon and i also wanted to also get use to doing water changes well i was changing there water everyday day with twoday old treated water and they bot got fin rot so i started putting IAl in the jars adn Bettafix remedy also plus they get VitaChem, anywasy the female is doing fine she has finrot on all her fins but its statring to growback will the male only lost a ventral until today I have been doing less water chnages on them and keeping them in IAL and bettafix drops and I changed his water yesterday and today his dorsal has FinRot , I'm so MAD  My questions is my other 12 bettas have never had any problems even the other 4 from betta pals is it something with Steels? He had bettafix and IAL in his water what should i do, my only thing is I guess i should Just clean the bottom of his jar and do one week water chnage? Its just frurstating becuse when you think of finrot you think its from dirty water so by not cleaning his jar i feel I'm making it worse maybe? it has to be from clean water ,what Shoudl I do?
here arre some facts: my water is perfect, my other bettas for the last 6 months have not had any problems i have never had any disease in my fish room, He was in water with IAL(just a little leaf barely tints the water maybe I need to add more?) and bettafix remedy and Vitachem drops. In a brand new jar never used. I need help :OPPS:

Have you checked your water source lately??? Sometimes tap water has nitrates and other lovely nitrogen and phosphates... Especially in the spring when the ice is melting and farmers are pumping their fields with fertilizers.
Since nitrates are a good contributer to fin rot, you might wanna check your tap water... if it sucks... you might need a few weeks of water from wally world till the nitrogen is outta the tap water.

FYI, I'd recommend using a liquid test kit since it is more accurate and will give you a better indication of what's going on.

If your water doesn't show any problems... then I dunno... might just have some bad fish.
Clean water and salt and make sure the temp is up might be the best bet for a bit.
IAL couldn't hurt either.

You might try adding more ial to their jars. Where did you get your ial? sometimes when you buy it off the net you get second hand already used stuff believe it or not. I got mine from Yeevs nephew-in-law who lives in Malaysia and collects the fallen leaves himself and cuts and packages them and sends them to you. Yeevs can get some for you if you want. I have gotten them from his nephew in law twice and they are of excellent quailty. I use a couple leaves in my 2.5 gallons and it has kept illness away and has helped my chronic tail biter's tail heal. Also how much bettafix and how often are you adding it? It should be helping the fin rot as well. As Davenia mentioned you may have to switch to bottled spring water untill your water quality improves. If you are going to use bottled spring water avoid the Wal-mart brand. I have tested it with a test kit before ( not just one bottle but a couple of random ones) and it contains 5.0 nitrate. The purest brands of water that I tested with the test kit are Ice Mountain and Crystal Gyser. They both have 0 amonia, 0 nitrite,0 nitrite and a ph of 7.0.

See, even I learn new things.
:P
Never tested the Walmart water... Remember, I'm the butthole with RO/DI from the tap.

I was using bottled spring water excusivively. The this last time I changed water I used treated tap water. I know for a fact I have rust in my pipes .( I can see it when the tap gets turned on) I used the aqua safe that came with my 2.5 gallon mininbow when I bought it. The seem to be doing fine. I guess time will tell. i always add salt to my water. I usaully do a 100 percent water change on 2.5 gallons weekly ( filtered tanks). My question is this - I know Aquasafe removes heavy metals like the rust from my tap, but I have always been a fan of Prime when I had my goldies. Which do you think I should go for if I decide to continue to use tap water?

davenia7 - April 24, 2007 06:17 PM (GMT)
Have you tested the tap water??? That's the main step in that decision. Some people do have horrendous tap water.

I ONLY use Prime.
Tried other stuff and didn't feel it worked as well.. I dunno why. Just an inkling I got.
I think it's bc for people to use something soooooo smelly, it had better work well.
Just remember to keep your prime in a ziploc baggy.

I know Prime smells but it really works. I just did not know if it neutralized heavy metals. I did not know to keep it in a baggie. Why?

davenia7 - April 24, 2007 07:42 PM (GMT)
If the bottle leaks, you can't get rid of the smell for months.
My boyfriend spilt it without telling me, I thought something had died behind the tank for months till I directly asked him if he had spilt some prime per the advice of peeps on my cichlid forum.
He said yeah, right here. I took a wiff... and still smelled to high hell.
Took some serious carpet cleaner to get the stink outta the carpet.
Still easier than moving the tank for something dead behind it though.
And this is in our dining area.
Peeeyoooooo!!!!

Wow I bet it really stank then since prime smells like rotten eggs ( sulphur) When I had goldies I always kept it in my fish keeping bucket under the sink

i wish you the best with it.
I've not done 100% WC's in years, so I dunno about too much WC, but who knows.

Doing regular water changes doesn't make the fins rot, it actually HELPS prevent it! Try a course of mardel maricide, could be fungus or something. Put in a touch of salt, do you have any betta spa? It is IAL except concentraited, might help a little more, and it also has vitamins and good stuff in it.

That, and check the PH of your water. Does it come out of the tap higher/lower than what your betta is in? try doing water changes after you feed, or feed less, because organic crud in the tank could be causeing ph swings which would effect your betta's tail.

bigphunny - April 26, 2007 03:22 AM (GMT)
I have betta spa and Vita chem I put in his water plus IAL, and i Always Put a little salt there tanks and in the aged water. maybe it is a Fungus? I haven't really thought of that, i just assumed it was fin rot becuase it was bright red and then teh Fins rotted off hince fin rot but maybe a fungus, But he has only been fed 4 attison betta pro pellets once in the mornig and once at night, so there is never any food left over, but who knows I will think about a fungus treatment? don't know if i want to do that yet. his jar is prestine but maybe some sort of fungus got in there, I don't know how but maybe.

You got a low weak immune system gene betta as I can see. Hardly can fixed them. All you can do is do your best changing more water frequently. Those bettas are not good to breed too or carry on to the next generation. ^_^
