Title: Nasty Stuff In Jar Water.... Help!
Description: Fungus???

Mumusuki - April 8, 2007 09:29 PM (GMT)
I came home from a 3 day vacation today....
.... let's just say there are a LOT of things I need help with.
One is that I came back to find the 10 gallon I age water for the jars in, AND the jars, had white balls and strings which were suspended in the water. It looks like it is a fungus....
How do I get rid of this and what is it? Is it dangerous?
My first thought would be to put some Maroxy in the 10 gallon next time I fill it up, and have that dosage circulate through all of the jars AND the 10 gallon, at the time of my next water change.
HELP!!!!

Its possible that its dust- I get something like that.

I think you should just do a complete water change and rinse out the tank and everything really, really well and wipe off any scum.

That sounds a little odd tho.

Mumusuki - April 8, 2007 10:55 PM (GMT)
I don't THINK it is dust... unless dust multiplies.
Now that I have thought about it, I have seen this stuff before in that ten gallon.... but I think it multiplied because I didn't do a water change for days..... instead of the usual daily.
I rinsed out the 10 gallon with REALLY hot water multiple times.
I now have it filled up for tomorrow's water change with a few drops of Maroxy(a fungal medication) and salt....
.... hopefully this will clear up.

Anyone else have any ideas?

I've never encountered anything like that so I'm at a loss on what to suggest. Teh maroxy is a good idea, it certainly can't hurt anything. Is this water circulated at all, have a filter in the 10 gal?

LaBella - April 9, 2007 05:44 PM (GMT)
Sorry I missed this..
It looks like the stuff that was in my tanks, only mine was worse and paint based.
It is dust of a sort.
It is a film that formed on the water. Stuff settled on it, and that stuff was likely dust.
It is oogly, but I don't think it would have harmed your fishies.

Mumusuki - April 9, 2007 05:44 PM (GMT)
No there is no circulation... It would probably not show up if there WAS circulation though....

.... hmmm, time to buy a filter? lol

Yeah, I saw those pictures of what you had, but it isn't as solid as the stuff you had... I would almost compare it to string algae, except it is white. It grows down from the smallest specks of anything. There was a bug that landed when I was on vacation, and it grew off of that.

wildmagiclady - April 9, 2007 05:46 PM (GMT)
Yes, you need some sort of movement at the least. Any water sitting for very long with no circulation will start to go stagnant. ANY water.

LaBella - April 9, 2007 05:47 PM (GMT)
ALIEN BUG DNA!!!!

wildmagiclady - April 9, 2007 05:47 PM (GMT)
:OO

Mumusuki - April 9, 2007 05:48 PM (GMT)
LOL

Maybe I will buy one with the gift card Belle is sending me. :flower

wildmagiclady - April 9, 2007 05:50 PM (GMT)
There you go.

LaBella - April 9, 2007 05:54 PM (GMT)
Hey, there is an idea!!

Mumusuki - April 9, 2007 05:55 PM (GMT)
Me is smarticle! :bonkers

That's definately a mold/fungus it happens all the time in our lab. It makes me wonder what fell into your water. If the fungus clear doesn't work and you have a few days you can always fill the empty tanks with water, add bleach let it sit then rinse copiously .

Mumusuki - April 9, 2007 06:00 PM (GMT)
Thanks for the ID pouhamu!

I actually have Jungle Fungus Clear tablets... you know, those fizzy things.... should I add this to the water?

wildmagiclady - April 9, 2007 06:02 PM (GMT)
Nice ID there. It's great we have such a wide variety of knowledgeable people around here.

I would just use a bubbler :) Its cheeper and will still mover the water.

Mumusuki - April 9, 2007 06:23 PM (GMT)
The problem is my air pump is on the other side of the room, and I don't have room over there to put it AND my BBS hatchery.

wildmagiclady - April 9, 2007 06:29 PM (GMT)
I know how that is.

pouhamu - April 9, 2007 06:33 PM (GMT)
I don't know if the fungus you have will be susceptible to the fungus clear tablets. If you don't mind "wasting" a tablet to see if it works it's worth a try. We always end up dumping, washing and autoclaving classware that gets this. I would be tempted to dump everything and do a good cleaning.

Mumusuki - April 9, 2007 06:34 PM (GMT)
I'm sure many people here do. ;)

wildmagiclady - April 9, 2007 06:34 PM (GMT)
Yeah, i'd have to agree with Pou. I'm not sure I'd want to risk using it with my fish.

Mumusuki - April 9, 2007 06:37 PM (GMT)
I don't mind "wasting" one.
I just HATE using bleach when it comes to my tank.... I have had a bad experience, even when rinsing a TON and using LOTS of dechlor....

pouhamu - April 9, 2007 06:45 PM (GMT)
I hear what you are saying Mumu I always end up over bleaching. I've found that if I soak in bleach water I can use less bleach than if I'm doing a quicky because the the bleach is in contact with the glass longer so you can use less bleach. Then I rinse till I feel like I'm crazy, dump and fill with plain water and let that sit overnight/day. Then I do a few more rinses and let sit to dry. Doing this my tanks are out of comission for a few days and that is the sucky part.

Mumusuki - April 9, 2007 06:50 PM (GMT)
Yeah, the fry wouldn't have water changes for a few days....

pouhamu - April 9, 2007 06:51 PM (GMT)
oops forgot something.

My deal with the tank treatment is that fungus are horrible when it comes to being resistant to treatment. This sounds like an environmental contaminant fugus as opposed(sp) to one of the pathologic fungus that cause disease that the tablets are designed to kill.

Again about the bleach another thing to try is to make up a small amount of bleach water dip a paper towel in it and use the paper towel to clean your tank. That way there is much less bleach introduced into your tank.

wildmagiclady - April 9, 2007 08:36 PM (GMT)
Well, I always do clean ups with bleach water and I don't have any troubles. I always use a really good dechlor too. I fill up two sinks; one with bleach water, the other with dechlor water. I wash quickly and it's very diluted bleach water, but I let them sit in the dechlor sink awhile and always let them sit at least 24 hours too.
