Title: Breeding Tank Size?
Forever-Mango - June 22, 2006 06:47 PM (GMT)
I was just wondering whats the recommended breedering size tank. Because last time I used a 2ft tank...they spawned ok, but the fry was too seperated so all of them died.
I want start breeding again, but this time i want to do the right thing.

I believe 10 gallon is the standard. Filled only 6-8 inches. That's what I plan on using.

I too have a 10 gall (40 litre) tank that worked quite well for my first spawn. When the fry reached the free-swimming stage I added a small handful of Java moss, that gave the fry some where to hide from dad and a sorce of infusiora.
Edited to add that the tank was filled to 4 inches with cycled water out of my healthy girlie community tank. I don't know if that is a big no-no, but it has worked for me so far!

I used 4 gallon tupperware, 5 gallon tank and 10 gallon tank. All around 3 inch high water.
I put plastic divider after 12 hours as always so the breeding compartment is around 1/3 tank space in a tank. I am forcing the girl to breed as fast as 24 to 36 hours. ;)

I can only speak for the one spawn that I have so far but I put the female in the breeding tank (not in a chimney) about an hour or two before 'lights out'. They spawned the next afternoon. The female only suffered one bite to her tail and the male had no damage at all. I am hoping that the next spawn (different couple)goes as well.
