Title: How Should I Do This?
Mumusuki - March 27, 2007 12:59 AM (GMT)
Here is what I have:
10 gallon housing 45+ un-jarred fry with heater
empty 20 gallon with filter and heater
24 one gallon jars(10 full) kept at room temp.(low 70s)
I now have an open 20 gallon. Should I move the unjarred fry to that? Or should I use it to age water for the jars?
PLAN A:
-keep fry in 10 gallon
-fill 20 with water for jar water changes
--BENEFITS
---Able to do more frequent water changes
--CONS
---less room for fry to go
PLAN B:
-Move fry to 20 gallon
-use 10 gallon to house jar water
--BENEFITS
---More room for unsexed fry to grow
--CONS
---Not able to do many water changes for jars
Which plan is best?
LaBella - March 27, 2007 03:28 AM (GMT)
I would move them all into the 20 gallon, and use the 10 for aging.
Yeah, there is less water for you to work with, but the jarred 10, you don't need to fill themall the way, and you can change them every other day.
wildmagiclady - March 27, 2007 04:54 AM (GMT)
Yeah, what she said. But what I'd most likely do, being me, is get something else to age water in and use the 10 to setup another spawn!
:lolo:
LaBella - March 27, 2007 06:24 AM (GMT)
^ that is true.. all she can think of is setting up the next spawn.
She has fishies swimming out of her ears, through her toes, and in her hair.
Maybe YOU should be bettaqueen, lolol.
yeevia2006 - March 27, 2007 08:01 AM (GMT)
Get a 55 gallon rubber trash can from hardware store. Then aged water from there. ^_^ I got 4 55 gallon rubber trash can to aged my water. LOL :lolo:
Haeun - March 27, 2007 08:36 AM (GMT)
I was about to suggest what Yeevs said. You can age water in ANYTHING pretty much; you can get a few 5 gallon buckets to age to water in (which can eventually be used for water changes too B) ) or you can a huge sterilite/rubbermaid plastic tub for cheap (it's like... only $15 for huuuuuuuuge tubs that are like 55 gallon-ish) or get a huge trashcan and age water in it. :OO Just be careful to tell guests that the trashcan is for water, not for trash. :OO :OO :OO :OO :OO :OO :OO
See, problem solved.
Now you can use BOTH the 10 and the 20 to grow the fry out in. :) That means they grow EVEN FASTER! :)

I wanted to say that, but I was thinking that with 6 smaller siblings, Mumu's space is limited, as are his options.
I think the parental units would put a quick end to all this fish nonsense if one of the little folk decided to go swimming and drowned, or thought putting a hole in the bottom of one was a good idea.
davenia7 - March 27, 2007 03:35 PM (GMT)
I keep multiple 5 gal. buckets with lids in my closet.
1 - RO/DI Saltwater - kept running with heater (set to 78-80 degrees) and minijet powerhead.
1 - RO/DI Freshwater - for DIY salt.
2 or 3 - Treated tapwater for angels and bettas. kept with a heater (set to 80-81 degrees) and a powerhead.
I do this bc you never know when a WC will be needed immediately in an emergency. Also, in case of the ever feared tank explosion, you are good to toss the fish in there till they can be rehomed. Or at least get new water for your cups in the case of bettas. And you don't have to worry about temp issues so much as with freshly treated water bc you have it heated already.
If I had kids, I'd get one of those closet door lock thingies to keep them out.

You have that dead on Belle....
I don't have enough room in my small room to hold a bin AND the jars... My space is really limited.
Also, I currently don't have $15 to buy a bin... yeah, all my money is now in savings. :) Good thing too, or I would go all out.
Well, there are more jars being filled up everyday.... it is now over 10, but will never exceed 24. Should I fill them all up about halfway and do water changes about every other day?
EDIT: Also, what is the best and safest way for me to move them?
wildmagiclady - March 28, 2007 12:17 AM (GMT)
Mumusuki - March 28, 2007 12:28 AM (GMT)
LOL But I can't fit a trash can!
LaBella - March 28, 2007 12:42 AM (GMT)
That is what I would do, and for extra water, you can just fill the empties, that will help give you extra water without taking up so much more space.
You can scoop them out with a brine shrimp net, a cup, your hand.
They are pretty hardy buggers.

Do I use water from their tank to fill the 20 gallon, or should I start with new dechlorinated water from the tap?
Mumusuki - March 28, 2007 02:34 AM (GMT)
Anyone.... Anyone??
I want to do it tonight. :)

To fill the 20 gallon tank I want to move the fry to, from their 10 gallon.
Should I use the water from the 10 to fill the 20, or should I start with new water?
wildmagiclady - March 28, 2007 02:40 AM (GMT)
How old are they now? If they're older, I'd start with new aged dechlor water. If they're still fairly young I'd use as much of the ten as possible so long as it's not real dirty.
Does that help?
Mumusuki - March 28, 2007 02:45 AM (GMT)
Uh... it does get really dirty pretty quickly. There are probably about 50 FAST growing fry.
They are 4-5 weeks old, but big for their age...
...what's the verdict?
wildmagiclady - March 28, 2007 02:46 AM (GMT)
I'd go with the full clean, make sure the temps match.
Mumusuki - March 28, 2007 03:05 AM (GMT)
Yes, I will make sure.
Thank you! :ROCK
Haeun - March 28, 2007 07:05 AM (GMT)
You could also have tried mixing, if you haven't done it already. Part old water, part new. And then do water changes eventually.

Got a couple other ideas for you. I was trying to remember all your tanks in your room from the picture you posted. If you use a tub type container with a lid you could use it as a stand of sorts so you wouldn't have to worry about younger siblings falling in, and at the same time it could take the place of something you maybe using now for a stand. Doesn't take up any more space, its safe, you would have lots more water aging space, you could use the 20 for the fry and save the 10 for a hospital tank. If you have a spare little water pump you could use that to pump water from the tub to your tanks and just pinch the hose when you need to move it to the next tank so you don't have to unplug it every time. Oh, one more idea. As far as what to use to transfer fry, or older fish for that matter, the best thing I've found is a black plastic soup laddle. I use a brine shrimp net to get them to focus on as they retreat to a dark area (the laddle). They don't seem scared to be in the black laddle because they can't see anything to be afraid of. The handle being straight up is easy to work with also. Good luck! :)
wildmagiclady - March 28, 2007 06:41 PM (GMT)
Wow! That's a cool idea Nutty. I didn't think of it either. B)
davenia7 - March 28, 2007 07:53 PM (GMT)
i love the ladel idea. i think i'm using it this weekend, when i break down my divided tank for some TLC.
nutty - March 28, 2007 08:13 PM (GMT)
How do you spell laddle? or ladel? or ladle? or laddel? or...? :OO
I'm glad I mentioned it! I like it mostly because it doesn't hurt the fins. Guess I hadn't thought about anybody else wanting to try it. Most people think the way I do things is a little 'nutty'. (tongue in cheek) :OO
Mumusuki - March 28, 2007 09:59 PM (GMT)
I think it is ladle. Thank you all for the ideas.... I am monitoring the tank's temp before I put them in.

ladle is the correct spelling.
Mumusuki - March 28, 2007 11:34 PM (GMT)
I just finished transferring them.
Just when I was done, I thought "Duh Josh!!! You should have counted them!!!"
Now, I need to get all of that algae out of the 10 gallon(EWWWW) so it can age. :)

Mumusuki - March 29, 2007 12:19 AM (GMT)
LOL Not until these babies are OUT!
Probably an F2 or cross one of the babies with a nice Ani blue female.....
... or I could do another Rocky spawn with one of my Ani girls...
wildmagiclady - March 29, 2007 04:09 AM (GMT)
Oh sorry. I forget, not everyone is like me who thinks if I have an empty spawning tank it must be filled. ^_^
LaBella - March 29, 2007 04:43 AM (GMT)
You'd go crazy here, Sher, I have am empty 10, two empty 5s, a 10 with one fish in it, a 5 with one fish in it..
You'd be like, oh no.. gotta get some breeding going!!
I do have a ten with a pair of cohabitators, though.
nutty - March 29, 2007 04:15 PM (GMT)
Glad to hear they all got moved without any glitches! So are your parents getting into this too? What about your sibs?
pouhamu - March 29, 2007 04:44 PM (GMT)
Good job...................didja take new pics? lol
Mumusuki - March 31, 2007 07:37 PM (GMT)
No new pictures, sorry. I have been busy with auditions. ^_^
Well..... my parents just kinda check in every once in a while... my dad likes to tease me.... my mom is starting to not-so-subtlety hint to me that "This fish thing is getting a little crazy."
My siblings like to come in a watch them. "Ooo, there are so many fry!!!"
EDIT: I forgot to ask what I orginally was going to...
I have a heater for the 10 gallon I am going to age water in... should I heat up the water that is being aged, or should I keep it at the same temp. as the jars(70 degrees)?

Yep. Wouldn't take me long to have them all setup and pairs in them. Though I generally setup with around a 4 day lag between.
I need to move some kids and setup a new one myself. I want to breed the Black pair I got from Ani.
Mumusuki - March 31, 2007 08:50 PM (GMT)
Yeah, breed your Ani pair!!!
Could someone give me their opinion on my question in my last post, please?
Thanks!
wildmagiclady - March 31, 2007 08:51 PM (GMT)
Sorry, missed your question. I'd leave it at the temp you want to do water changes with. ;)
