yes the lady who owns the website of Bettatalk is a good breeder. She is a betta expert. you can check her site out www.bettatalk. com. she is a little pricey though. but she does have some gorgous fish.btw Animal planet a while back did a show on her

I'm sorry.. I just have to say.. she has done alot but her fish are usually not HM once you get them and you can't see them in advance.

She's a nice enough lady but...

I say if your going to buy any fish i would demand to get a picture of it unless its somone from this forum. especially HM since we have all learned theres alot of fish that have Halfmoon caudals But They not real HM's by IBC standards.

Hey New day rising and Labella since you two are both on, will both or one you tell me what the deal is with Giants? just PM me, i'm curious about what the appeal is since they seem to sell on AB for a hefty penny and where are they from? Jsut curious if you have the time. if not no big deal.

LaBella - March 23, 2007 03:20 AM (GMT)
The big deal with them is that they are big, huge even.
A young giant, you get them close to 3 inches long. They could mature to about 4.5 inches.
That is what the appeal is.
I have heard that they were produced by selectively breeding for larger fish.
I have also heard the first ones shown were treated with growth hormone to make them bigger.
The difficulty seems to be that they are difficult to breed, in that it is hard to keep the size. Most of the time you are getting a giant or a half giant, and no sibling.
You then have to breed them with the largest fish you have, and hope that they can wrap.
Even when you get fry from a giant to normal betta breeding, you'll have to hold on to them for a while to see which ones are expressing the giant gene.. Which technically there isn't, because they were selectively bred up..
So I guess it would be more accurate to say you have to hold on to them to see which ones will express the set of modified genes that cause them to grow larger.
Giants also NEED at least 2 gallons to reach mature size, but 5 would be better, and they take longer to mature than regular bettas.. Think chihuahua verses Labrador.
Also, they tend to have swim bladder issues. My conjecture is that giants and half giants, even those that stay small for a while before blossoming into jumbo size, have increased appetite compared to their normal siblings. The increased appetite means they eat more, eating more puts more pressure on the swim bladder causing SBD issues.
That is my take on them... If any one can add, or correct, I would be glad of it.
