Title: Rude Male
Description: Tearing scales

Mumusuki - February 17, 2007 01:06 AM (GMT)
I released the female today.
The male was very weird. His form of aggression is charging and taking some scales in his mouth and then spitting them out.
The female was ready to breed. He was so aggressive, she just laid at the bottom of the tank with her fins clamped, showing submission for the male. He would still charge her.
The female got scales ripped off of her, so I put her back in her guppy trap.

What can I do to heal the scales that she has lost? I am hoping my parents will take me to the petstore today so I can get some bettafix(antiseptic, right?) to help it so it doesn't get infected.

Can anyone help me? Last time I bred this pair, they were wrapping within an hour, with only a few scales lost.... he ate the eggs though. :(

You let her off too fast. You should let them see each other in the chamber longer. I prefer side by side pairing.
Yes, Bettafix and IAL together the best. ^_^

Alright, thanks yeevs.
She seemed so ready to go, I thought I would let her go. She still wants to get with the male. Should I release her after another day, or should I take her out? I don't have bettafix or anything else yet.....

If that male is that agressive, I would chamber the girl for a day and let the male stood up. LOL :lolo:

Surprise Surprise!!!!!!!!!!

I went and played video games in my brother's room and I came back and there were eggs in the nest!!! She had jumped out of her guppy trap and spawned!!! They were finished late last night so I took her out.
But YAY! EGGS!
Let's hope he doesn't eat them this time! ^_^

He ate the fry/eggs last night. :(

Advice: Get those two to breed, once the eggs are good and happy, take both out and lower the water level to an inch/half an inch, and let the eggs go on their own way. When they hatch, the water will be low enough that they should be able to squeek up and get air on their own with out help from daddy.

As they get bigger, just add a little water to it! In theory, that makes it so you don't have to do daily water changes when they are really small, so there is less chance if loosing any of the little ones. When the water level gets up to where you would normaly have it for an adult betta, then start doing water changes.

It was how it was explained to me when I was on another site and some one was having the same problems with her male.

I was just trying to give him another chance... that is what I will do next with this pair....
It is so hard to wait 2 weeks for reconditioning!!! AHH!!!
I am thinking about breeding him with a steel or royal HM female (all have very good form) because it is SO hard for me to wait.

Mumusuki - February 18, 2007 09:59 PM (GMT)
I see some eggs in there with little eyes... there are less then 20 of them though...
Should I pull Rocky out now?

Haeun - February 18, 2007 10:00 PM (GMT)
Maybe you can do surrogate fathering?

Mumusuki - February 18, 2007 10:23 PM (GMT)
I don't have any males that aren't egg-eaters that I can move the eggs into. lol

Should I pull Rocky and lower the water level as suggested by woodschild?

leafgirl115 - February 18, 2007 10:35 PM (GMT)
If he has not eaten them yet he may not. I would feed him but see what the others say....

Mumusuki - February 18, 2007 10:44 PM (GMT)
^I'm waiting for others before pulling... :)

Mumusuki - February 18, 2007 11:39 PM (GMT)
There are fry now. Still, not many at all.

(RC) - February 18, 2007 11:48 PM (GMT)
I would leave him now. If he eats them you only have a few fry to lose.

Alright, thanks (RC). That was my thinking also, although I do really want fry and not have to wait 2 weeks to recondition... AGAIN.

yeevia2006 - February 19, 2007 12:35 AM (GMT)
Don't touch the male mumu. :chair
Leave him alone.

*cowers in fear and hides in a corner*
Okay Okay Okay Yeevs. I don't plan on doing anything but hoping and crossing every extremity I have that there will be fry that won't get eaten or die.

Some males are just aggressive. I had one male that killed every female and one female that killed every male. I put them together and after they beat each other they spawned. I never leave my females in the chimney long anymore. I find for me anyway if I leave them in the tank but separated they seem to get frustrated and want to fight more then spawn.

^How long do you normally chimney now, then?

(RC) - February 19, 2007 02:00 AM (GMT)
Between a few hours and 1/2 a day,but that's just me.Others put them together right away while some leave them apart for days. It all depends on what works for you.

Well, I am not quite sure what works for me. Every pair I have done, I have had to breed them at least 2 times before I get any fry. And that has only happened 3 times. :)

davenia7 - March 23, 2007 02:14 PM (GMT)
and here I house my female next door in the 10 gal. divided.
Dunno, if we'll get babies this summer, but I'm trying for it.

bettaqueen - March 26, 2007 02:47 PM (GMT)
What Yeevs mentioned -ial and bettafix- will help her heal. you can also add a little salt to the water and increase the temp

wildmagiclady - March 28, 2007 12:45 AM (GMT)
Yep yep.
