Title: Scared Male??

jaded12 - February 7, 2007 03:22 AM (GMT)
I have a pair in the spawn tank right now. Male made a nice nest, I released the female at 2 pm today, they chased and flared and did the flirty dance, she has a couple nips nothing big. They began rubbing against eachother under the nest and such, they I guess she must have gotten it into her head to attack him and she went after him full force, now he's hiding in the plants in the corner, and won't come out, been there for a good hour. Did she scare him? It's the first spawn for both, I guess all I can do it wait it out, right? Thanks

Some guys just don't like agressive ladies!!

Sometimes the female is the agressor when spawning. I would just try to keep an eye on them to make sure things don't get serious. Nipped fin is OK and all a part of their spawning ritual, however if things get worse or the male simply refuses to come back out and deal with her, you may have to cancel the spawn and separate them.

If that happens, you can re-condition them and try again or you could try her with a different male that might not back down from her. As with humans, sometimes betta couples are simply not compatible.

Hope This Helps!

If he is hiding I would take him out now. I doubt you'll get a breeding when the male isn't dominant. My copper female wouldn't breed with her copper sibling. I had the bright idea to breed her to the platinum. While they got along initially, when I came back an hour later she had darn near killed him. She removed most of his fins at the base and also removed his eye. While I managed to save him, he is no long breedable. The only thing aggressive enough to breed her is her sibling who beats the crap out of her.

I put the female back into her cup last night before I went to sleep, there was NO WAY I was leaving them alone in there over night. He's rebuilding his nest now, so in a while I'm going to give them a shot again. If it still doesn't work, I'll abort, and give my black marble mini pk pair a shot.

Yes. Try one more time and if still like that, she is a meaner and you can abortion this pair. ^_^

Or find a dominant meanie boy to breed her to and then try the nice guy after she has recovered.
