Title: Breeding For Color

I read somewhere that over in Thailand and such, the really big breeders breed veiltails to figure out how to get certain colors, instead of breeding the more "Prized" PKs, and HMs and such. Is this true?? Cause it seems like a good idea. Was just wondering :D

I dont think so. Veiltails to me are just mutts from breeding a dominant long tail gened fish with a recessive short tail gened fish. Like PK x HM will give you VT so the VT carries PK and maybe HM phenotype. Or HM x CT and you'll get VTs with bigger spread and some crowning since HM is basically a "show" gene. It's complicated. I dont think Thai breeders are trying to breed a true VT. But then again, Yeev would know better since he knows more Thai breeders.

Hmmm, well it's true that you find colors on VTs that you never see on other tailtypes because they are "mutts," really. However, I'd imagine that the fact they are mutts would make it hard to make the connection between certain colors/patterns and the responsible genes. In a way it makes sense, but in a way it doesn't. *shrug*

I don't think they work VT for color because they still have a market for all the odd colors that come out of trying different things as long as they are SD or HM, but have to wholesale VT's

I just wanted to say, and I don't know how true this is, but I believe I read that Sawarut saw the apricot spots and approachd a few breeders, gave themsome of his stock to work with, and they came back a year later with the what we know know as the dal.
if I weren't so punch drunk I would remember where i read that, maybe..
But I think if it is true, it is interesting and backing the OP in a way.
