RC, This is my first time getting two grizzle pairs from thailand. I am still lost about judging the grizzle color. Can you talk more about grizzle in these two pairs? Are they grizzle and are they ok? ^_^
The females starting to show some light, red wash on their fins now. <_<
(RC) - February 3, 2007 06:31 PM (GMT)
The color on the bodies of both male fish are what you are looking for in grizzled. The fish should have a 50% dark iridescent color and a 50% light iridescent color in a random spotting or fleaking pattern. No two colors are preferred over any other two. Red is a major fault in grizzled and if there is so much red the fish becomes a multicolor. The fins could use a bit more spotting/flecking pattern and the heads need work to cover them also with the iridescent colors. Overall color wise they are great examples of grizzled. The two females need much work on the color of the body and would show in pastel class (unless they now show opaque)

UHa. I was clueless when I saw what their heads look like that especially the two males when I got them. Don't know if they are they going to be classified as grizzles or something else. Kind like gas mustard head. ^_^
Yes, the females are too light in color. I wish they are more like the males color. today We will see what the frys gonna be look like. Both pairs are ready to put in breeding tank. ^_^

Mustard gas is nothing more then a bicolor or butterfly depending on the pattern...or the ones that are really trying to be mustard gas are multicolor. The name mustard gas was first given to green bodied yellow/green butterflies. It's since been applied to just about everything that is iridescent and yellow..or orange now. You'll find I don't use the different color names given to everything to try to sell more fish. I try to stick to true genetic based colors that we have used for years. I'm pretty hard ***ed about that and true HM. :bonkers

RC, what do you think about the purple gas mustard butterfly? I like the color better than green gas mustard butterfly. Are they just found the color or been a while? ^_^
(RC) - February 4, 2007 12:03 PM (GMT)
I don't think they exist. :Y All the "gas and mustard" are just one of three types of fish. Butterfly, bicolor or more and more muliticolors. I just answered an email from a new breeder that just bought mustard gas gene fish. There is no mustard gas gene so there is no mustard gas Geno fish. The name mustard gas was first used years ago to sell fish. At the time the breeder was trying to sell green/yellow/green butterflies for up to $600.00 dollars a pair. That's where all the names that's only purpose is to sell more fish came from. Black orchid is another perfect example. You'll buy a fish called a black orchid long before you'll buy a black fish with really bad iridescent wash in the fins right ? Well that's what black orchid is. OK I'm off my soapbox As far as do I like the purple/yellow or green/yellow colored fish goes.. I have a green/yellow Bicolor tattooed on my right shoulder so that might give a clue to my color preference :hawaiibanana

Hey, RC! I remembered reading this. It's about the origin of "mustard gas". What's your spin on it?
http://www.bettysplendens.com/articles/pag...?articleid=1256
(RC) - February 5, 2007 09:15 PM (GMT)
My spin is mustard gas , like ALL the names with no genetic bases, are used to sell fish for more money. Jude Als was asking $600.00 a pair for his "mustard gas" at one point. The best "mustard gas" are nothing more then green bodied yellow/green butterflys.I have no use for all the names being given to fish to try to sell them.

Did you have any luck with your grizzles spawning yet? Mine are along the traditional lines and I should have culled and redone the last spawn because for some unknown reason I got several fry with some red on them, but I think next gen. will take care of that issue again, they hadn't had that happen in the past. But I really prefer show type over trads. and yours looked really clean to me.
I will add a couple pictures of mine, I gave 2 prs to a friend to breed so if my males get too old to add new blood to, I will have hers to use. These are 3 mo age pics, I wasn;t going to sell any so I didn't take later pics. Mine weren't all I hoped they would be either, not enough color on the head, but the body and fins were pretty decent. Actually I think Sieg I. posted that he gets his best grizzles by crossing a pure green iirrid into the line, I have pure steel and royals and that is an other thing I may try soon.

On this one you can see a bit of red on caudal.

NIce griz but i have to go to the eye doctor i think cause i so cannot see this red your talking about!
Cameofins - February 17, 2007 04:57 AM (GMT)
Well Mr Global Mod(hey where's a smokin face when you need one? LOL) and Aiwen (child) I culled most of the ones with red but if you look at the last fish, in his caudal end you can see a dab of red, I see it like a smack in the head. I would like to perk up that line or..... can it and start another, it's up in the air for now. That's why I am waiting for Yeevia to spawn his so I can see how they turn out as well. The ones I have seen on AB have had red in them, if only in their vents, so maybe I will mix an irrid in with them and see what happens. B)
yeevia2006 - February 17, 2007 05:29 AM (GMT)
Mine will be in the breeding tank again next week. The females are reconditioning right now. ;) My schedule been really busy lately so next week will be great. ^_^
MObetta122 - February 17, 2007 07:29 AM (GMT)
all things aside cam how is the house coming back together or is it yet ?? also i got a gold buterfly pair toplay with for fun to break the grind up alil and a gold dragon DT pair to play with as well i was gettin gloomy with all our dark colors we run lol and if ya didnt see the post i had red pop outa my steel line was the damdest thing! butt on a higher note there is 3 perfect looking melano's as well in this crew which means they both carry it somewhere lol anyhow that made me kinda happy i was surprised as well cause i wasnt sure if she carried it or not . Vaca B) thats a smokin face here lol he just dropped his cig :)
Cameofins - February 17, 2007 04:43 PM (GMT)
The house won't be coming back together for a long time, have to order new cabinets, flooring, carpeting, the contractors have to replace both ceiings and a couple walls. It's quite the mess. On an aside, I hate red in a fish, any fish, unless it is a red fish. So I'm sorry that you got that, since you are such a softie and will sit on them. I wouldn't, but then I am mean, and :ugly . You have to toughen up a bit son. There I used an emoticon, no smoking ciggie man tho.
AiWen - February 17, 2007 05:23 PM (GMT)
lol Cam. So how are the frosties? I don't think you got red in them. And you've got to stop saying they're ugly cause they're beautiful :P
Mumusuki - February 17, 2007 05:30 PM (GMT)
^Oh! I LOVE her frosteds! I wish that I could get some, but I have a few bettas too many rigt now.
Cameofins - March 11, 2007 04:59 AM (GMT)
So Frankie. I am patiently waiting to find out if you respawned your grizzles yet. If you don't have time, I have a plan, why don't you sell a pair to me and I will give you some of the kids? I am back from the vacation that has set my breeding back months. But the vacation my mother offered us kids was a once in a lifetime opportunity. All inclusive week at a resort in Cancun, Mexico. I could never afford that myself these days. So my fish were starved and left for 9 days and only fed twice so as not to foul their water. I only had someone to feed them all, not signed on for their million water changes. Now I have to recondition them all and hope not too many of the older ones have passed their prime. Keep me updated please about the grizzles. Thanks. Deb
wildmagiclady - March 11, 2007 06:32 AM (GMT)
Light a fire under him Deb.
yeevia2006 - March 11, 2007 05:12 PM (GMT)
LOL
This two pairs are not easy to breed. Second time fail again. One female don't want to breed at all even bit up pretty badly lossing scales that nearly kills her. The other female fight with the male after breeding and he ate all the eggs up before I noticed it. Both males are very meaner type and aggressive. I still have to try again these two pairs later. ^_^ Very unusual pairs to breed. I had better luck breeding red bettas than these. ^_^
Cameofins - March 31, 2007 03:28 AM (GMT)
Hi Frankie. I got 2 prs, sibs of yours, popped a pair in a spawn tank and poof, I have little grizzles. I don't know how many yet, they were slow to hatch. And my pair spawned very nicely, hardly any damage. I was a bit concerned after you said yours were so difficult. I think the tank temperature must be lower than I thought, but there are some zipping around. Will keep you updated. So as of this week, I have 4 small spawns growing out, some frosteds, some irrids, and the grizzles, all less than 10 days old, I am back in business after the vacation. :D
