Title: Ryland Geiger
Description: Leaving??

well informed - September 17, 2009 03:23 AM (GMT)
I just read on TheMat forum that Ryland Geiger has left the U and is enrolled at Clackamas Community College back home in Washington. I had heard that he was having academic issues.....but this is a huge shock!

brdhntr - September 17, 2009 03:40 AM (GMT)
He is not on the roster, also missing is Mincey.

brdhntr - September 17, 2009 03:43 AM (GMT)
No Disney either? These guys have also been removed from last years roster.

mngrappler03 - September 17, 2009 04:21 AM (GMT)
Huge hit to the upper weights if that is the case. As much as i'm disappointed in seeing those 2 leave, I'm also excited to see the opportunity it will set up for either Nelson or Kettler or both to step up and make some noise. I wish both Disney & Geiger the best of luck in what they pursue. Who knows, maybe they'll end up back at the U after some JUCO? (we can hope right?)

nwsub - September 17, 2009 04:52 AM (GMT)
Wonder if that's why they got Kettler and Nelson? It seemed like they maybe had too many.

that'safactjack - September 17, 2009 10:17 AM (GMT)
i thought the consensous here was nelson couldn't/shouldn't make 197? who will be there for the gophs this year?

hummer126 - September 17, 2009 10:38 AM (GMT)
So does anybody have any info on Disney or Mincey? What happened?

Someone said Kettler 197.

TheOriginal CK - September 17, 2009 01:51 PM (GMT)
Wow - this is a big loss - especially Ryland - I think he would have been our starter at 197 this year. I had heard about the academic problems but you'd think that could be overcome.

Disney or Mincy, I had not heard anything. IN SHOCK!

I wish them all the best in their future endeavors.

TOCK

Viratas says that Nelson was always recruited for 197 and he has that on good authority. He'll redshirt this year. Maybe that'll change now with no Geiger.

So maybe that answers my question on why we recruited all the heavies.

that'safactjack - September 17, 2009 02:55 PM (GMT)
would be great to see either of these young men be able to get down. i really thought it would be too much of a cut for either. hope i was wrong! and i second the "good luck" to those that have left the gopher room.

well informed - September 17, 2009 02:56 PM (GMT)
I have heard other plans for Nelson. He seemed pretty huge at Nationals in Fargo and had a pretty good cut to make it i guess.

pastmyprime - September 17, 2009 03:44 PM (GMT)
Nelson had to cut 40 lbs to make 215 in Fargo and he was huge. No way he makes 197.

how does someone cut 40 lbs and still stay upright?

18576 - September 17, 2009 06:17 PM (GMT)
Good question.

Colonel Kurtz - September 17, 2009 06:53 PM (GMT)
You let yourself balloon up after the high school season and put on a lot of body fat. It obviously didn’t affect his wrestling to much because he did very well; however I am sure it was not a fun cut. That being said, he obviously is going to make a great sized hwy and as a gopher fan am glad he could make it up to 255 so easily.

lilmatdog - September 17, 2009 06:57 PM (GMT)
Nelson couldn't certify for a 205 weight class last year if they had one, no way he can cut to 197 after continuing to grow. I talked to him last year about where his 7% body fat would have put him.

Disney tore his ACL last spring right before the summer break, I was told he was out for this year when that happened.

Geiger is a big loss as I don't think we are really deep at that weight. I also read that Kettler was going to cut to 197 for college but I am not sure that will happen. Maybe someone has seen him more recently and can tell us where he is weight wise. If he is around 220 then there could be a shot, I don't know what his body fat would be at 220.

im soo pissed about Geiger!!! god i hope he comes back..

DWB79 - September 17, 2009 07:18 PM (GMT)
This really sucks.....

I've heard something about Mincey but that recruiting class just took a HUGE hit. Pretty much 60% of the reason it was the #1 class left. Maybe Geiger will come back in a year or two, Disney too if he goes JUCO. Do they need a release to wrestle at a D1 that isn't MN after they wrestle at a JUCO?

197 will be a hole again this year. Hopefully Eidy or McPhail will be better.

brdhntr - September 17, 2009 07:22 PM (GMT)
Kettler was shown at 270.9 for Fargo. I don't think he has 74 pounds of excess.

Tufrthnu - September 17, 2009 07:38 PM (GMT)
There's a reason Geiger was not that highly ranked a prospect after his high school career. It's a little thing called:

GRADES

I never thought Gieger would pan out. Same goes for Mincey. (If I recall correctly, Gieger, even with all his wrestling talent, was only ranked 89th).

And when will you people stop talking about Nelson and Kettler being 97 pounders?

Are you sure Nelson isn't going to go 74 and Kettler 84?

Makes about as much sense.

Tufrthnu - September 17, 2009 07:47 PM (GMT)
I don't see McPhail on the roster either.

?????

Now that is really going to hurt.

Looks like Eidenschink is going to be the guy.

He should be eligible for a 6th year.

Anyone have any info on the above?

DWB79 - September 17, 2009 07:50 PM (GMT)
w/o Mincey, Geiger, and Disney it does clear up some weight classes.

197-Eidy is listed as a "Redshirt Jr."--he probably gets the nod this year as McPhail (who would have beeen a Sr. or RJr. this year) isn't on the roster either...

--I think this could really benefit the recruitment of Lehman if they see him as an 184lber..have him redshirt 10/11 at 84 while Yohn finishes his Jr. year there...(w/Eidy at 197 as a Sr. or maybe the return of Geiger as a R-So. after JUCO year)

--Hwt-Berhow/Nord as Jrs. this year...Kettler/Nelson as Redshirt FR. After this year, they might have to sit a year, then battle out as Red-So. in 11/12.

133-Ness this year--Reiter or D. Thorn in 10/11 as a Red-Fr ....the bigger of the two bumps up to 141 as a Soph and replaces M. Thorn.

I saw C. Maricki is back, has he ever wrestled in college? he's been around for awhile, injured. Is he the Joe Crede of the Gopher team?

Hopefully Mason/Dietchler can stay at 149/157 for at least 2-3 years. We have Ortiz redshirting at 165 this year ready to take over for DS. Steinhaus is listed as a 165/174lber and maybe give C. Yohn a challenge when Yohn is a Red-So. in 10/11.

cwillaert - September 17, 2009 08:04 PM (GMT)
Very sad to hear Geiger is gone. By all accounts he's a great kid and great wrestler...maybe a year at the CC and he can get eligible and come back.

I just don't see either Nelson or Kettler ever weighing 197lbs again in their lives unless they were very sick and knock on wood that doesn't happen.

lilmatdog - September 17, 2009 09:39 PM (GMT)
I expect to see Dietchler at 165 next year and Mason at 157.

Well if you would read 2 posts above him they were talking about them being at 149 and 157 the following year.

For any of you who might know Lehman, if Ryland, Atticus and Mincey didn't cut it with grades neither will Tyler. Leave him off your Minnesota list of recruits.

Also, college is tough for kids just doing school let alone how many hours of training they have to put in. Then you get some kids who can't control their social life and end up overwhelmed. Time to grow up but also a time for family support more than ever.

Tufrthnu - September 18, 2009 03:02 PM (GMT)
It wasn't a "call" bob.

It was a feeling I had from day one when, after doing a little internet searching, trying to find out who this Geiger guy was, that there were a lot of wrestlers with less impressive credentials ranked ahead of him on someone’s ranking list. I don't remember what list it was, and I don't remember exactly what he was ranked on that list, but he was way way down the list for someone who supposedly had a ton of talent and had a lot of people excited about his signing with the gophs.

It doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out that he must have had some baggage.

After doing a little more digging, I figured it had to be because of grades or discipline problems or both. Turns out, from what I've read, he didn't have any discipline problems, just problems with making the grades.

Are you one of those sensitive types bob?

With the talent he has I'd say it was a risk worth taking. Granted it didn't pan out or at least not as of this time. From a pure wrestling perspective I think he was one of the most talented kids in that class.

Not sure what your talking about I was just pointing out that you come on here after they fail and say ha I knew it all along. Nice job I guess, pat yourself on the back.

And Geiger was a top 10 recruit, #1 at 189 and on the Asics first team so I was wondering what the hell you meant by 89th.

Youthdad - September 18, 2009 03:55 PM (GMT)
I thought if Gieger left he would go train Freestyle full time in Colorado..Wish him well but this hurts the Gophers huge...

lilmatdog - September 18, 2009 05:50 PM (GMT)
Perhaps if he is going CC instead of Freestle than he really does want to come back here... a couple of years or maybe one even when this group of recruits is ready and the Iowa double class has left... who knows.

I agree that wrestling at the D1 level is difficult and to maintain grades is not either. Most of the D1 schools are Universities and their classes can be very demanding. Two full time jobs period.
