Looks like SCSU did an excellent job of filling their needs.

"Jacob Kahnke, Prior Lake, 2X state champ, will wrestle hwt"

Needed this like you read about

wrestle2 - July 23, 2009 03:57 AM (GMT)
Looks like SCSU will be traveling to Northwestern twice. First for NW Duals and then for the Midlands.

spidermonkey - July 24, 2009 09:17 PM (GMT)
idk there pretty stacked at middle weights with skala and all them but they need some more little weights and knanke and berg arent gunna be amazing there fisrt year there gunna get thrown around and beat up cuz coleege isnt anything like high school so im guessing a year or two more and they will be actually good

lilmatdog - July 25, 2009 01:23 AM (GMT)
Kahnke was a redshirt at a D1 school last year, not in high school.

spidermonkey - July 27, 2009 09:46 PM (GMT)
i know that so why is he going to d2 then

Your spelling and grammar are absolutley atrocious.
But thats ok, we all have faults. ;)

On the flip-flop though, i see Kahnke adjusting quite well to SCSU. Been a while since i've watched him wrestle.

There are kids at the U who work out 2-3 times a day. D1 is a full time job. It is quite possible that Kahnke wants to wrestle but he wants to live a little as well and D1 just is not the place to do that.

SCSU is quietly becoming a regional and national power at D2 and it is possible that Jake can be a large part of that while still staying on top of his studies and seeing a little of college life. Plus he might have got some good coin to go there.

He wants to wrestle hwt and Old Dominion wanted him at 197. Didn't want to be cutting that much all the time. Probably also wanted to be closer to home and not the year round wrestling that D1 does.

germ517 - July 28, 2009 09:49 AM (GMT)
ODU's heavyweights went a total of 22-26 and Strawn still has another year at 197. I can't imagine them not wanting a good heavyweight.

Maybe OD thought in D1 his best chance was at 197. Kahnke didn't want to cut to 197 and that's where OD wanted him. He also wasn't real happy out there.

germ517 - July 29, 2009 08:55 AM (GMT)
Maybe, but it doesn't make much sense for a team that needs a heavyweight not to let a guy wrestle heavyweight.

Maybe he's a little to small to compete at HWT in Division I? Maybe he'd peak at being a 2x national qualifier in DI and decided he'd rather AA in D2 instead?

true future - July 30, 2009 06:39 AM (GMT)
It's still hard for me to picture Kahnke as a heavy. How big can he get? 240? 250?

lilmatdog - July 30, 2009 03:51 PM (GMT)
Perhaps a program far away from home isn't what everyone wants or needs. There are considerations beyond just D1, D2 or D3. Perhaps he never felt right with his teammates. My point is simply college is more than what level you are wrestling at. Kahnke went D1 out east and returned to Minnesota for whatever reason. I trust his judgment and if he wants to wrestle heavy I think he has a fair idea as to what it will entail at each level. Good luck to him.

cwillaert - July 30, 2009 07:04 PM (GMT)
I know he and his family are very close. Being that far away isn't for everybody. Not saying it is THE reason why he's back but am guessing that it is one of the reasons.

Unit - July 31, 2009 07:07 AM (GMT)
A kid almost has to be over 250 to take the pounding a full year on the mat and in the room will dish out at a D-1 level and Top D2 schools.

Worked out with a HWT from Cresco Ia. last Monday, Adam Preska(sp?), 295 6"4' plus and will be a senior in H.S.. Thats some mass to move but I could feel D1 in that kid.

Later had Lance Peters in the Room, 230 pound D2 HWT from Agustana. He will need to get up to atleast 245-50 to Dance with that Mankato state kid or any other D2/D1 HWT.

Speed can take you real far but locking horns with weight can get a guy injured over time.

Look forward to watching Clouds progree into another year.

Any bets on team placing this year???

Top 10!

scsu_83 - July 31, 2009 02:07 PM (GMT)
prediction on SCSU finish this year?

top 10 (somewhere from 8 to 10)

Close the gap on Mankato and Omaha

Beat UIU and Moorhead in duals
Dogfight with SJU and win another close one

4 AA wrestlers this year

continue building to be a national power in DII

B) (That is me with my rose colored glasses)

wow, dog - are you psychic or what ?

story on the guillotine; apparently Brian Litch is transferring back
to MN and will wrestle for SCSU -

Welcome back to Mn, Brian

WrestleMe - August 18, 2009 02:08 AM (GMT)
Given he wrestles to his potential, Brian will be a 3X AA barring injury.

Wayzata 2007 Team now has ....
Litch at St Cloud
Reynolds at Concordia
Zilverberg #1 at MN
Zilverberg #2 at MN
Schreiner at Cornell
Landrum at Cornell
Harris at ???? Anyone? Anyone?

Impressive even by Apple Valley standards; isn't it?

Wasn't Landrum at Augsburg last year?

Abe Froeman - August 18, 2009 02:24 PM (GMT)
Ok....so I see this news & I'm going to search this kid's name to find some wrestling results from opens. On first glance, open tourney results don't indicate what somebody posted as a likely 3X-AA.....but who knows, the kid has some talent and the transition to DII could produce some success.

Second listing in google was a bunch of pics (male models). Is this a Cornhusker thing to do?

You can read about him at NE web site - team roster (previous season).
He only wrestled 3 times (0-3) last year (141). Year before he was at 133 and went 7-7.
Would be good if he could still make 133 cause that spot is open going into season and 141 has Suarez.

wrestlechick - August 18, 2009 05:52 PM (GMT)
too bad it doesn't show that he was injured both seasons and pictures were way before college.

Yes he was and Nebraska the year before.

Haven't seen Brian in a while but the last time I saw him I wasn't thinking of him as a 133lber. I don't know this for sure but I'm thinking he's way too big to get down there. Maybe even a 149lber?

lilmatdog - August 26, 2009 02:57 AM (GMT)
SCSU announced their captains recently, junior Gabe Suarez, junior John Sundgren, junior Derek Skala, and sophomore Tad Merritt.

Congratulations to them.

It's right on the front page.

Guess that's how you get 16,000 posts.

Thanks anyway.

Cy Wainwright (Newberry) was D2 hwt champ last year (beat Wilson at nationals 8-0) and SCSU has added him to their coaching staff. He should help SCSU new hwts.

4 new hwts.
Chris Brassell, Park Ridge, Ill. took 3rd with 44-2 record, 35 pins, is about 265#.

Jake Kahnke, 2X MN champ, transfer from Old Dominion is about 235#.

Casey Hellenberg (275#) wrestled at Simley and then went into the Army. He lost to Wilson 4-2 last year at SCSU Open after not wrestling for a few years. He is built like Wilson, one solid looking big guy. Won't be eligible until 2nd semester.

Brad Wollum is another hwt. 2X state place winner (2nd, 3rd) from Canby. Not sure how big he is.
