Title: Cole Van Ohlen
Description: doing great at Air Force Prep

Jvallstar - December 9, 2008 12:28 AM (GMT)
He is having an awesome first year winning both the amateur cowboy open and Old chicago open in dominating fashion. Tried to find him on the air force web page but no luck, must be something to do with the whole prep school before academy thing.

VonOhlen has been doing well. He was down in Kansas (I think it was) this weekend. It doesn't look like the prep school site has results or anything posted for the sports they offer.

What exactly is a prep school, and does it count against your college eligibility?

Pinlover - December 9, 2008 01:58 AM (GMT)
Last time I talked to Cole He was 13-0 and that was at Thanksgiving.

Brdhntr, from what he has told me he isn't at the academy but its like a mandatory Red shirt year and then next year he will be there and be a Freshman.

Shane - December 9, 2008 02:09 AM (GMT)
The prep school seems to be just that - prepare (I guess it's usually those just out of high school) for life in a military academy. Well, not so great weekend at Fort Hays - went 1 and 2.

nick vo - December 9, 2008 06:21 PM (GMT)
The prep school is on the Airforce Academy base in Colorado Springs .There is about 200 people from around the world attending,8 from Mn.The Prep School year counts as ayear for your military retirement,as well as getting paid about 800 dollars a month while you are in school.Cole can only go to open tourneys 'unattached' just like any other red shirt ,only he is not a red shirt freshman. He is wrestling at the Glen Brand Open on Jan 16th. The Prep school doesn't gaurrenty that you will get into the ACADMEY but Cole is doing well enough that he would have to shoot himself in the leg (in a night club)not to get in! He had two great tourneys but had an alergic reaction to some meds he was on the night before the last one .He had no energy for the tourneyand lost to #7th div 2 149 pounder 3-1. You can find his schedual on AFA Prepschool Athletics .If you want to see results you just have go to the college were its at results. Thanks, Nick (Von)Ohlen P.S., Shane, I can't believe you are letting them get away with calling
Cole "Van Ohlen" when his name is VON Ohlen.Van, is Dutch "Von"is German, a tougher race!?

Von Ohlen is German for "THIRD PERIOD KILLER" whick Cole is! I have seen him come from behind to BREAK an opponent in the 3rd period dozens of times.
He will be a monster in college! I wish we could have kept him in Minnesota!

I did respond quickly and spelled his name VON . I guess that was too subtle - I'll just have to spell it out next time B) .

Hey Nick, thanks for the post... and Shane thanks for the link...I read a little on their website and it said that the athletes at the prep school are recruitable, as if they are still in highschool...question is. "Has any other school been in contact with Cole?" What a great stage to showcase your talent against some of the best wrestlers in the country...Rock on

Von ohlen is a stud

nick vo - December 12, 2008 05:50 AM (GMT)
Rock Star , Cole only has his phone on the weekends so he is fairly difficult to get a hold of .Even if they would, with the coaching staff that he is going to have next year (Sharratt,Horton ,and now volunteer Barber) I don't think that any one could talk him into leaving! His added bonus is that he gets to go up to the OTC and work out with the national team sometimes. He had his phone tonight to line up a ride over there tonight so he called us when he was done .He said he got to wrestle a Simmons ,Michigan State ,Cole took him down and leg -laced him and turned him.He was pretty jacked up . Hard to put a price tag on opportunities like that. Nick

Looks like this prep team competes in the same post-season as the club team in Winona. (NCWA)

What determines if you go to the prep school before getting in the academy vs. getting in the academy directly from HS?

Candidates for the academies are ranked based on a number of factors with the main one being grades. The highest ranked students from each state get a Congressional nomination and enter the academy directly. The next tier are offered a spot in the prep school.

Here's a related story.

My closest friend wanted to go to the Naval Academy when we graduated HS. His GPA was off the charts, had his US senator referrals ready to go, but because he didn't score high enough in some are on his testing they wanted him to go to the New Mexico Military Prep School in Roswell for a year. It's a good thing he did because he decided going to a military academy wasn't for him after all.

Hey Shane, Cole is at the AF Academy. He had 6 weeks of basic starting the end of June ,but he was released the last 3 days to go work out at the senior freestyle camp at the OTC. Started classes(chem, calc,Japanese, and swimming ) August 5th.He wrestles at Omaha Nov. 21st , there was some maroon and gold guys there last year.Ellen and I are going out to the Academy Labor day weekend for parents and home opener football game , but we have to get back to be up in Mpls the next weekend to talk-some-trash at the Gopher home opener against Thee AIRFORCE ACADEMY FALCONS !!,,,,,,,,,,,,Nick

I think that everyone knows that I bleed Maroon and Gold in college and hate to see kids choose other schools. The military academies are the rare exceptions and I think it is great what Cole is doing and wish him the absolute best of luck.
