Is it really going to be over?
No. Good ideas are never over. It may take another form, or another shape. It may re-enter in a different fashion: movies, features, books, but a good idea is the most uncontainable thing on the planet. People need them. South is not over.
Is it really the end for SON, or is it just the end of SON on the
MTV Kids Networks is always a partner. They helped me launch the show. Remember that 5 years ago when this was talked about, it seemed impossible for this to be put on the air. People thought there wouldn’t be an audience, but you guys got it—in huge numbers.
Do you even want South to continue?
Yes! It’s like a child—you create that, and of course I want to see it grow and change. I have a hundred stories in my head right now that I want to do. The connection of those two girls was so rich and fertile for me that I can see it going off in a lot of directions, it’s just choosing the right one to invest the time and energy into.
Would you ever consider doing a spin off of spashley?
Yeah. I think it would be interesting to see what either of their lives do, and how they come back and run into each other 20 years after college. They’re still humans and they still have to get through the human experience.
Would you ever consider take South of Nowhere to another TV station and make more seasons?
Yeah, of course. Again, that would be a discussion I’d have with MTV family networks.
My question is if ever there are any other network interested in SON would you be willing to continue the show????
Other nets were interested in the show—it performed too well for them not to be. There’s both a legal and political issue in taking a show from one network to another—in 20 years I can’t recall one time when it’s been done successfully.
How have the cast members reacted to the cancelation? Especially Mandy and Gabby. Are they glad to move on or are they willing to continue if South were to be picked up by another network?
Both Mandy and Gabby were sad, but they’re both professional actors and it’s the world we live in. All shows come to an end. If I was to move forward with South, I would certainly want to tell their stories, or tell other stories to tell of people in the same situation. By starring in a successful series, they both have credits to move on to do great work.
Have you told the cast that you plan to seek another network and will they return if the show is pick up for a 4th season?
The only thing I’ve discussed with the cast is that I’m playing with a movie idea.
Mr. Lynch as we know there will be a short video after the series ends on Dec 12 that will be about the day after in the show and one that will show the cast five years down the road my question is this: Do you plan if a network picks up the show to move ahead those five years or do you plan to start right were it left off?
That’s a great question. It would depend on the situation. I’d love to see them in the college years with a long distance relationship—that’d be interesting. But if there was a network that had an older audience, I might do it where they’re in their professional lives. So that’s open.
Do you have any plans to continue South in means of something different than TV?
Yes, I am thinking of a movie for it. Also, I’m thinking of books for it. I have in my mind that I’d love to do a girls’ video game that has them starring in it, but I’m not sure what it is yet.
Do you think you could mak a movie with south of nowhere or something just to really end it, even though so many people love this show and plot
It wouldn’t be an end, it would be another story that continues on.
As far as any plans for a possible movie, would it contain the original cast? I really don't think it would be South if there were changes.
I always thought of SON as an experience as opposed to a specific—that obviously Spashley is the jumping off point, but the story can go in many ways—what would happen if they separated, what if someone else who knew them, we focused on their life story.
If you were ever able to bring it back for a follow-up movie, season, or even book, would you consider focusing more on Spencer and Ashley, their relationship and their character development, in a realistic and mature manner? I'd love to see their relationship deal with adult problems -- surviving a long-distance separation, dealing with Ashley's self-destructive tendencies, Spencer's unhealthy level of desire to 'take care of' Ashley, Ashley's history and Spencer's jealousy, and other conflicts -- in ways which *don't* involve them breaking up even temporarily, and lead inexorably to a stronger relationship. There are few enough stable couples on television full stop, let alone lesbian couples
Absolutely—those are the themes that would be interesting to me. I think that the greatest story is the story of our own human experience. Those would be the stories I want to tell.
If you made a movie BASED on south of nowhere (Not including the original people) who would you hire to play the roles of Spence, Ashley, and Aiden?
Aaah! I cant even contemplate that question! It scares me.
Is it possible to have south of nowhere or a version of it continue on a website such as youtube?
Definitely possible.
I was wondering if maybe a book will be made about the show or a fiction book of the show will be made sometime in the future?
Absolutely.
Would you consider continuing the series in a book?
Absolutely.
As you have noticed, south of nowhere has an extremely loyal fanbase who is willing to do whatever it takes to keep this show on the air. What else (if anything) can the fans of south do to save this show?
I think watch the show, send letters to the network about the show, tell people about the show—but never lose sight that it’s been such a gift to have what we had on the air, that I have no remorse or bad feelings about this. It was a great great thing.
What efforts have you made to continue South?
First, I just kind of had to take a rest! And go write some other things...I talk about it, I was in Europe recently talking to a lot of the European networks about it. It’s doing well over there too.
How much do the rating have to go up to so we can have a new season of south? I honestly don’t know the answer to that.

What was the reason Danso wasnt on the show anymore?
I needed to create a dramatic arc to continue the show, and the focus of the family was in danger of falling apart. His death put more pressure on Spencer’s choice to live her life. I wanted to see a family that could withstand these problems, and ultimately brought Mom and Spencer closer together. As Arthur says to Paula, “I don’t want to lose another child.”
My questions is about how it affected the show when Danso Gordan [left]. Was the the whole thing with the shooting planned before this? Was it planned for Chelsea to lose the baby? Did you have to change a lot of the storyline in order to accommodate this change in cast?
I pretty much knew over the three years where the show was going to go. Changed every day, but knew the story lines—how one child is effected by the world and knowing who she wants to be.
Many of the other characters (Glen, Kyla, Madison) are notably weaker, more cliched, and more shallowly written than Spencer and Ashley -- but they still got lots of airtime. Was the show originally conceived as more focused on Spashley with the ensemble aspects 'tacked on', or did it start out as an ensemble piece and have Spashley take over naturally?
I’m sorry if you thought they were weaker or more cliched! We worked really hard on all of them. I think that when you do a TV show, the ones that it’s about are the ones that it’s about. Spashley’s relationship was the dynamicism of the series, so everyone else’s relationship will be secondary to that.
What is your most memorable south moment that happened on or off the air?
Second day of filming, Matt Cohen walked out of Mandy’s trailer, and I looked at him and I looked at her, and I said, “If you make her cry, you’re fired.”
Most memorable moment of the show for me is still when she shows up at the prom in the pilot, and the two of them look at each other and say, “Ok, we’re gonna try this.” Spencer is beautiful, and Ashley is showing some vulnerability.
When you first started this show, did you expect for it to be as groundbreaking as it was?
No. I got tired of the silliness of teens—I wanted to do a show that emotionally touched them, pu the teen world in my point of view, instead of a pre-fab, everybody rich, BMW world, where narcissism and self-obsession is everything.
Is there a moment when you truly realized that you have changed thousands of people's lives through creating this beyond amazing show?
Yeah, when I received a letter from a mother who said that her young daughter was dealing with her sexuality and the daughter was acting out a lot, doing a lot of self-destructive things. And she wrote that in the show they found a common ground to talk to each other. I realized that this was something that touched a much needed emotional core in people.
Did you ever think that south of nowhere would get as big as it did.
I knew when they told me that it was going to air—I had a moment when I went, “Oh my God, they’re really going ot let me air this, I hope people get it.” And then it first hit the air, and I saw Spencer and Ahsley at the prom together, I thought, “My god, this is amazing that it got on the air.” It was at that point that I realized that this was something that was going to touch people.
What scene have u imagined that you did not bring to life but you wished u had?
Good question. But no, I think that we were able to do everything that we needed to do.
Are you planning on promoting the show on european television?
It is on European television now—it airs in Europe and throughout Latin America, also Australia.
Was it your idea orginally for Ashley and Aiden to ever get back together?
That’s a secret!
When season 3 was being written did you know it was going to be the last season?
No, I did not. But that came through not lack of attention to the show, but the network changing its overall focus to attract a younger audience. I have nothing but love and respct for the N for allowing me to put the show on the air.
Will we ever see some of the scenes the network made you cut from the show?
No, I was never asked to cut anything.
I heard that every cast member was re-cast after the initial pilot was filmed (save Mandy Musgrave and Gabrielle Christian). Can you say who some of those previously casted actors were?
It is true that everybody was recast—but it wasn’t because the people in the pilot did a bad job—they found other opportunities. When things change, it’s usually for the right reason. Altho, a little scret note: if you look closely, you’ll see that Aasha Davis was a cheerleader in the pilot, and I cast her because I thought she could dance—and she couldn’t! Aasha really brought the show up in seasons 2 and 3. I thought her character arc was great.
If south of nowhere wasn't going to be cancelled...how many seasons were you going to make?
A hundred! I don’t know, but I know that I think there would have been a whole great story fof them going to college, the work force, and then who knows? Onward and upward!
You have said you have five seasons worth of material, will you reveal the final episodes even if they cannot be produced and made into the show?
That’s an interesting question—because I could make it into a movie which I’m writing right now, it could be another series...when you fnish a show, there’s a natural emptiness you have, or emotional drain. And I think I’ve just been quiet with the show and myself, and now I’m interested in seeing what could happen with it next. A lot of it is because you fans showed such an interest in it!
Will the real reason's why South was canceled be revealed to the fans?
The network changed their programming to appeal to a younger audience. Again, the network was as big a fan of the show as I was.
Have you recieved any gifts from fans over the years as a token of their graditude for the show?
Them watching it, and their letters about it, are priceless. We had an amazing Spashley postcard campaign, and the compasses that we were sent were really fun too.
How do you feel knowing that youve helped to change and improve so many lives? Wonderful! I feel that I might’ve been given too much credit! It was the right time, right network, right idea, and because of my past body of work doing kids and tween shows, I was the right guy at the right time. And Spencer and Ashley obviously deserve most of the credit. Gabby and Mandy performed them wonderfully.
What does the shows title "South of Nowhere" mean [literally or to you]?
I know that when I was growing up as a young boy, I felt that everybody knew where they were but me—and this was a degree farther than that for me. I wanted that to be the essence of the show. Nobody ever knows what they’re doing with their lives. South of Nowhere was uncharted territory—as a teeneager, I felt like an alien walking around on the planet. And in South I was able to put a visual and a voice to what I felt as a kid.
What is your favorite aspect of Ashley's character? And what compelled you to write her that way?
Her independence. Fiercely independent. Refusing to play anybody else’s game, and at the same time, she just wanted to be loved. One of the subtleties of her character is that her mother had 4 or 5 husbands, so she’s at a point where love is a surface emotion as opposed to a committed, deep emotion. But somehow intuitively she knows love is a deep thing—except she doesn’t know how to get it until she meets Spencer.
Is there anything that has occured in South of Nowhere that you regret? That you would change, if you so could, now?
Not that I can think of. I’m pretty pleased with it all.
Who was ultimately responsible for the direction the series took in its 3 seasons? Were all comments on websites/MySpace/forums, etc. researched after each season, so that the writers had a sense of what the fans responded to both positively and negatively?
That was certainly looked at. But the responsibility was always the story as I saw it. Nancylee Myatt was the showrunner for the first two seasons, and she had a huge influence over the show. Chuck Rosin was the showrunner for the last season, and he had influence too. I always felt that the best stories I could tell take from little pieces of my life. We’d also work with a drama class in an LA high school and go over the storylines with them to keep some authenticity. And I read a lot of journals that have been published of kids who are coming out.
I was wondering if you'd consider posting all episodes on a website?
That’s not in my control, but it’s certainly something we’ll look into.
When you were writing for the 3rd season, did you ever think about Spencer & Ashley having a movie date, and the movie that they could have seen was The Hills Have Eyes 2?
No, it might’ve been a good idea!
If Spencer had to be with someone other than Ashley (from the show) who do you think it would be?
I always thought Madison and Spencer—because I think that, before the show began, Madison and Ashley might’ve had a moment together!
If Ashley hadn't come along, do you think Spencer would have been as accepting of her sexuality? Ashley's so strong and not many other girls are like her.
Great question!! No, I don’t. I think that Spencer would have remained closeted, and her story would have been a lot different. Ashley allowed Spencer to come into her sexuality with no judgment. That was the great thing about Ashley.
If you could choose one hook-up that will NEVER happen on this show, which two people would you choose?
Mom and Aiden??? Kidding! I’m not sure, I can’t even think of that!
What is your favorite episode of South of Nowhere?
First one. And the end of season 1.
Are you satisfied with the way the series ended?
Very much. It was beautiful.
Who is your favorite character on South of Nowhere besides Ashley/Spencer?
that’s like asking who your favorite child is! I loved them all. They all fulfilled a really good part of my life. They all showed us really good sides, and really flawed sides, and that’s what made them so human.
How did you created the characters of Spencer and Ashley?
Spencer was based ona friend of mine’s son who had just told his father he was gay. His father asked him how he knew, and his son asked him how he knew he was straight. And Ashley was just a vision—I knew that that person existed—beautiful, damaged, struggling in her existence, she was just a wonderful dream I had.
What is your favorite line from the show?
“I’m not into labels.”
Have you ever readed a Spashley Fan Fiction? If you did... What did you feel when you read the story of one fan based on something that you created?
I was blown away, and I loved it! I thought it was great—great young writers out there doing cool stuff. I didn’t read it until after the series because I didn’t want that to interrupt the process, but afterwards...I thought it was fantastic!

What's next for Tom Lynch? What are you working on now?
I’m executive producing a pilot for Spike about thugs and street gangsters, I’m writing my new kids series for Nickelodeon, Girl 2.0, and I’m thinking about what the movie for South would be. And I can’t wait to see Twilight!
Do you take the posts at The-N's South of Nowhere forum seriously?
Of course, I take it very seriously. I was glad that we touched so many people. People should still keep writing to The-N!
Do you ever get recognized when you walk down the street sometimes?
No, but when people ask me what shows I make and I tell them South of Nowhere, they always tell me how much they love the show.
I've always really secretly wanted to do the kind of producer/creating shows kind of thing. Apart from studying English/Writing, are there any other avenues I can do to get into that?
Get a job at a production company, studio, network, and do everything—I started out delivering coffee cups, sweeping up stages. Just learn everything, always be available, keep a good attitude, and your mind open!
Something I've always wondered is that if the show wouldn't be kept so PG, would Spencer and Ashley kiss more? Especially in the earlier seasons, it seemed like whenever they were affectionate towards each other, it would be in the form of a tight hug, while other straight couples got to kiss more.
I didn’t want it to come out so overtly that they jumped into bed together—I think for the authenticity, we needed to show the social pressure on that. We wanted to show the realistic side of things, not the fantasy. Those kisses were well-earned—and I think the amount of intimacy was appropriate with the evolution of the characters and their relationship.
Would you ever do a lesbian based tv show or movie?
I just did one!
What do you think of the fans of the Spashley?
The greatest fans in the world!

Will there be a special boxed set of dvd's to purchase? I realize seasons 1 and 2 are already available through Amazon but I've read that they are in DVD-R format and do not include any extras.
