it's possible. there were tombstones in Halloween Town, and where do you think all the ghosts came from? he must've been.

It's a good question, I personally see him as more of an immortal spirit that takes the shape of a skeleton, but I know in the rpg system Nightbreed, there is a character much like Jack, whom was once human. I'm not sure wether the character was just a homage, or if there was a character in folklore on which both were based, but its definitly worth looking into.
