History: Dan, as everyone calls him, was born to a struggling merchant and his young wife. Dan’s grandfather had become a heavy drinker once his wife had passed away making bad investments and the business began a steep decline. Dan’s father was left to pick up the pieces.
To say that Dan was a surprise would be an understatement; he just wasn’t supposed to be. Not only did, Rothen now have a wife to take care of but also a baby.
Dan’s life up until he was five was a shabby one. He usually had enough food to keep him happy and as most five year olds don’t notice that they’re wearing the same clothes only patched and mended over and over again. And he generally enjoyed running around. This was about the time that Rothen began dabbling in shady things in the business.
Business began to incline and the family was able to move out of the lower sections. Sonea, Dan’s mother, contracted an illness. Making money became a fixation point for Rothen to get past the worry and grief. He began digging deeper and deeper with the shady side of things.
Dan and his father never got along very well. They couldn’t agree on anything. The only thing that had kept them from tearing each other’s eyes out was Sonea and without her to buffer the two, they became even more estranged from one another. Summarily, Dan packed himself off to the university. He visits his home only on weekends. While he has no real idea what’s going in his father’s business deals, he has a feeling that they’re not exactly legitimate.
Personality: To outsiders, Dan may appear to project an aura of "definiteness", of self-confidence. This self-confidence, sometimes mistaken for simple arrogance by the less decisive, is actually of a very specific rather than a general nature; its source lies in the specialized knowledge systems that Dan started building at an early age. When it comes to his own areas of expertise -- and Dan can have several – he will be able to tell you almost immediately whether or not they can help you, and if so, how. Dan knows what he knows, and perhaps still more importantly, what he doesn’t know.
Dan is a perfectionist, with a seemingly endless capacity for improving upon anything that takes his interest. What prevents him from becoming chronically bogged down in this pursuit of perfection is the pragmatism so characteristic of the type: he applies (often ruthlessly) the criterion "Does it work?" to everything from his own research efforts to the prevailing social norms. This in turn produces an unusual independence of mind, freeing him from the constraints of authority, convention, or sentiment for its own sake.
As Dan can be unsparing of both himself and the others on the project. Anyone considered to be "slacking," including superiors, will lose their respect -- and will generally be made aware of this; Dan has also been known to take it upon himself to implement critical decisions without consulting his supervisors or co-workers. On the other hand, he does tend to be scrupulous and even-handed about recognizing the individual contributions that have gone into a project, and have a gift for seizing opportunities, which others might not even notice.
Personal relationships, particularly romantic ones, can be the Dan's Achilles heel. While they are capable of caring deeply for others (usually a select few), and are willing to spend a great deal of time and effort on a relationship, the knowledge and self-confidence that make them so successful in other areas can suddenly abandon or mislead them in inter situations.
This happens in part because many Dan does not readily grasp the social rituals; for instance, he tends to have little patience and less understanding of such things as small talk and flirtation. To complicate matters, Dan is extremely private person, and can often be naturally impassive as well, which makes him easy to misread and misunderstand. Perhaps the most fundamental problem, however, is that Dan really wants people to make sense. This sometimes results in a peculiar naiveté.
