---Character Information

Name: Kaelyn Falkner
Age: 15
Birthplace: Maren, near the boarder with Galla
Position: Trainee

History:
Kaelyn was born in a small mountain village in Northern Maren. Kaelyn was the youngest child in a family of seven children. Her father was a trapper, and while he earned a decent amount of money, it just wasn’t enough to support a family that large comfortably. Luckily, Kaelyn’s mother had a younger brother who had settled in southern Maren, on the plains. He owned a large wheat farm and could always use another hand to help with the work. So it ended up that Kaelyn’s two eldest brothers were sent down to the farm to live with her Uncle.

Kaelyn lived in the mountains for eight years, helping her mother around the house, playing with her siblings and learning about tracking from her father. It was not an easy life, the mountains were a cold, dangerous place, but it was all Kaelyn knew and to her it was the best place in the world. She loved playing in the snow, and climbing and hiking in the evergreen forests near her house. But then something happened that would shatter her happy little world and change it forever.

One day while climbing the steep mountain trails in search of game, her father lost his footing and slipped. He fell thirty feet before landing on the hard rocks below, dying upon impact. His body was never recovered. The cliff was just too dangerous to climb; it seemed Kaelyn’s father was the only one who had failed to realize this, and it cost him his life.

Kaelyn’s mother was devastated. Not only had her husband just passed away but they now had no means of supporting themselves. She sent a message to her brother asking him to send the two boys (now grown men) back home immediately. They were needed to take over their fathers business, at the moment the family was living off their savings, but she knew that it wouldn’t last much longer.

Even though they were coming back to work and help the family, the two brothers coming home also meant another two mouths to feed. There hadn’t been enough money to support that many people eight years ago and there still wasn’t now. Kaelyn’s eldest sister could not go, she was already engaged to the local blacksmith, and her other brother and sister were needed at home.

The only one who could be spared was Kaelyn. So after a tearful goodbye, Kaelyn was forced to leave her home and family, only half-understanding what was happening. Her mother had explained to her that she would be going to live with her brother on a farm in the south, but that didn’t make the thought of leaving any less scary. Kaelyn was still grieving the death of her father and needed stability at the moment, not a complete change of setting.

After many long weeks of traveling, Kaelyn found herself on a large farm on the outskirts of a large fiefdom. To Kaelyn it seemed like a whole different world. The land was completely flat, not a hill could be seen in any direction, just endless plains for as far as the eye could see. The strangest part was that it was early spring and there wasn’t a single flake of snow on the ground. Such a thing was unheard of on the mountains, where the snow stayed until late spring. Kaelyn felt completely out of place in a strange land that was like nothing she’d ever known.

For the next six years Kaelyn lived and worked on the farm with her uncle Rylan, his wife Adiana and their many children. Her uncle was a good man; hardworking with a deep rumbling laugh and her aunt had a nice, warm smile. Kaelyn was never mistreated, but she always felt out of place. There were so many children on the farm that no one ever seemed to have enough time to spend with her. She spent most of her time in barn with the horses. She didn’t know why, but she felt more at ease around them than she ever did when she was around people. Sometimes she even thought she could hear them talking. Whenever that happened she always brushed it off to too much work and a lack of sleep.

When she was fourteen she finally got sick of the farm. Her uncle didn’t really need her there; he had enough help already no matter what he said otherwise. So she left. She got a job as a stable hand at the local lords stable. She worked there for almost a year. She loved it; she was getting paid to take care of horses, what more could she want?

It was going well until one day the lord’s son came down to the stable to get his horse. It was widely known among the castles servants that he was something of a womanizer. Actually it was said he would hit on anything in a skirt. It didn’t matter whether you were a scullery maid or a lady; apparently this was one case where class didn’t matter.

It seemed that he had set his sights on Kaelyn this time. He was after her, and couldn’t seem to take no for an answer. He just didn’t seem to understand that Kaelyn just wasn’t interested. She figured that if she ignored him long enough he would get bored and leave her alone. But it had the opposite effect. He decided that she was playing hard to get and if he tried hard she would eventually give in. Kaelyn put up with it until he started getting frustrated. He began to become more insistent with advances. When he finally tried to use force, Kaelyn had had enough. She quit her job at the stable and decided to leave the town.

She’d always secretly dreamed of seeing far off place and now she finally had the opportunity to actually see them. She fell in with a group of traders her were heading west, she earned her keep by doing whatever odd jobs needed doing. Their destination was some place called Port Caynn in Tortall, near the ocean. Kaelyn had a fear of water; she wouldn’t go into anything deeper than her waist. She had no desire whatsoever see this ocean, what they described as a lake so big you couldn’t see the far side, it just seemed to go on forever in all directions. Just the thought of it gave her goose bumps.

She traveled with the traders through Maren and then Tusaine, finally stopping when they came to the capital of Tortall, Corus. They told her this was their last stop before Port Caynn, and Kaelyn had no wish to go there. Kaelyn had been traveling for months and was ready to settle down again. She immediately began looking around for work. She was wary of looking for work at the palace because of her past experience, instead settling for work as a stable hand at an inn near the Temple District.

After a few months Kaelyn heard of the Riders. At first she didn’t believe what she was hearing, a group of soldiers that accepted girls and boys, nobles and commoners. It was just to good to be true. Finally though, her curiosity got the better of her and she went over to investigate for herself. After asking around, she finally found some one who could tell her about joining. She was amazed be how few requirements there were for joining. She thought there must be more to it than that, but when she asked, they just replied bluntly, “Getting in is the easy part, it’s staying in that’s hard.” Kaelyn decided to sign up, it sounded hard, but what was the fun in something if there wasn’t a challenge?

Personality:
Kaelyn is a relatively nice person, although she is a bit suspicious of people when she first meets them. She loves to spend time with horses and can seem quiet when you first meet her. But this is far from the truth. Once she gets over her initial shyness, people sometimes have trouble shutting her up. She loves to argue and has horrible a stubborn streak. You can tell when she’s really angry; because it’s the one time she never talks. She just goes off and sits by herself, refusing to speak to anyone. She is sensitive about her height and is terrified of deep water. (She also has a moderate amount of wild magic with horses, I wasn't sure if this is allowed or not, if its not please tell me so i can take it out)

Physical Appearance:
Kaelyn has auburn hair, which is really just her way of saying its reddish brown. Ever since she was a child, she’s always wanted to have bright red hair like her sister and mother. But eventually she had to give in to the fact that it was auburn and wishing it were red wasn’t going to change that. Its goes down to her mid-back and she usually holds it back in a long braid while working. She keeps promising herself that she’s going to cut it short, but has yet to get around to it. She has dark green eyes, just like everyone else in her family. She’d never heard of a single relative who didn’t have green eyes; they were like a family trademark in her village. Kaelyn is about 5”5 and weighs about 120 lbs. She hates being short and wishes she were taller. A sure way to get her ticked off is to make a remark about her height.

Sample Post:
Kaelyn walked into the mess hall slowly, nervously tugging the end of her braid out of habit. She stopped once inside, not entirely sure what to do next. Shrugging, she decided to just go over and get some food; it seemed the logical thing to do. She would know if she’d broken some sort of protocol or rule if someone started yelling at her.

On her way over, she noticed a stack of trays identical to those everyone seemed to be eating from. Catching on, she picked up the tray and brought it with her over to the table where they were serving the food. She watched as the server plopped some sort of stew onto her plate along with a role.

Looking around, she noticed that most of the tables were empty. I wonder if I’m early? She didn’t think so; this was the time she had been told midday meal would be served. There were two tables near her, one with several people at it and the other empty. She hesitated a moment, unsure which one she wanted to go to. Finally she headed over to the one with three other trainees sitting at it, I’ll have to meet them sometime, I guess now is as good as any.
