Until recently, contact between human world and the merworld were expressly . When a mermaid was capture and held captive in a zoo as a performing animal, the merworld was turned upside-down. A treaty was made between the humans and the merfolk that stated that the two species would live in peace. The merfolk were not to cause trouble on the sea for sailors and fishermen and the humans were to leave the merfolk to themselves whether they chose land or sea. Many years have passed since the treaty was signed by both parties and the existence of merpeople among the humans has gone unnoticed for sometime. However there are still many human scientists and zoo keepers who believe the merpeople should be forced to return to the sea permanently or they should be locked up in tanks.
