NASCAR hopes to hold Busch race in Mexico

RICHMOND, Va. -- NASCAR had hoped to release both the 2005 NASCAR Nextel Cup and Busch Series schedules at the same time Friday, but the Busch schedule is being held up because the sanctioning body is negotiating to have a race in Mexico City next year, officials confirmed Friday.
The schedule is all but complete, with NASCAR chairman Brian France confirming additional races at Phoenix and California, just like the 2005 Nextel Cup schedule. But France and NASCAR vice president Jim Hunter said Mexico City is also under consideration.
"The Mexico City race could be a huge event," Hunter said. "There are 25 million people in Mexico City. We're working with folks there to develop something that would guarantee a year-round presence or a seasonal presence with trucks or some other kind of tour. That's very promising."
The Busch Series has never raced outside the continental United States.
The Mexico City race would be held at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, a 2.786-mile road course. The CART series has raced there the past two years and is on the schedule this year.
NASCAR would likely add a second road course to the schedule, perhaps with Watkins Glen International replacing Nazareth Speedway. Watkins Glen held Busch races until 2001.
Hunter said NASCAR's expansion into a foreign market is only for the Busch or Craftsman Truck Series.
"I don't think we'll ever take the Nextel Cup tour international," Hunter said. "The few forays that we made into that have been successful, but it's so difficult to move the equipment. That's the reason Formula One only has 18 events. It's hard to move."
NASCAR has held exhibition races in Australia and Japan, but the time and expense of moving cars and equipment was prohibitive.
For a country bordering the United States, however, NASCAR would reconsider.
"I know we're looking in Canada right now," Hunter said. "There's a potential for a Busch or truck race."

Kahne dominates Iraq Freedom 500 at Kerbala

KERBALA, Iraq (AP) -- U.S.-led forces brought Iraq the first ever NEXTEL Cup event to the Freedom Motor Speedway in Kerbala. The Freedom Motor Speedway is a new 2 mile Speedway set in Kerbala, Iraq.
Kasey Kahne started first and stayed there almost all the way, leading 145 laps and earning his thirty first career victory in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series and the first winner for The Freedom Motor Speedway.
Kahne became the third different points leader in 2010.
On a night when many eyes were on how the new asphalt surface and clear dessert skies fans wonderd how the new 2 mile track was going to hold up and whether a third racing lane developed, Kahne showed the front was the place to be.
He repeatedly pulled away on long runs and restarts, including two after a 30-minute red-flag stoppage with 12 laps remaining due to missle attacks to the Speedway.
Ahmad Chalabi (Track Owner) was reported saying, "HOLY SHIT LOOK AT THAT!"
On the last one, with three laps to go, Kahne took off more than 15 car lengths ahead of Jeff Gordon after Gordon's car was hit with a missle by a angry Iraq fan. Kahne easily won by 7.350 seconds.
"This is thirty one of many hopefully," said Kahne, who had sixty four second-place finishes in his brief career. He also moved into the series points lead, passing Martin Truex Jr., who was seventh, by 17 points.
The Iraq Freedom 500 was slowed by cautions 11 times, including a few early flags possibly caused by the terroist who threw gurnades on the track.
But driver Matt Martin said the groove appeared to withstand the attacks, a hopeful sign in advance of future races in Iraq.
McMurray started second and took the lead on the 86th lap, but lasted only two laps in front before suddenly veering into the outside wall.
"I saw Saddam I swear," McMurray said. "He was holind a sign that read 'Kahne will get you."
Kahne never had any such trouble.
The 33-year-old was making dust and won by handling myriad late-race challenges brought about by cautions and the late red flag.
The stoppage came after missles crashed in the first and second turns on the 238th lap, causing an extensive cleanup.
The race first went back to green with 10 laps left, and then again with three to go, and each time Kahne kept Gordon chasing.
"I could have got to his bumper there at the end of the race, but I figured since I don't have a bumper anymore there was no need," Gordon said. "He drove a good race all night and I was ready to get the hell out of here."
Hamilton Jr finished third behind Kahne's Dodge and Gordon's Chevrolet. Tony Stewart. was fourth, followed by Dale Earnhardt Jr and Matt Kenseth.
