Title: Saddam Hussein to be executed
NeverBeenThawed - December 30, 2006 12:23 AM (GMT)
Reports are that he will be executed within the next 2.5 hours.
It's a very large event in the political world. I'm rather glued to the news watching all of it.
Katie9 - December 30, 2006 12:35 AM (GMT)
It's days like this I wish our guys weren't over there :(
NeverBeenThawed - December 30, 2006 12:37 AM (GMT)
I wonder if I should have even posted this, it's like opening a can of worms.
I agree, Katie, but it is what it is now.
Princess_Sara400 - December 30, 2006 12:40 AM (GMT)
Before 10 pm according to CNN. My guess is it was already done
NeverBeenThawed - December 30, 2006 12:41 AM (GMT)
I think we'd know if it was done already, actually, but that's just me. I've got the news on right now.

I don't think you opened a can of worms Lena.
I just have a soft spot for our guys over there, I have a best friend over there and a girlfriends brother that we just want to come home.
NeverBeenThawed - December 30, 2006 12:45 AM (GMT)
Oh, I have a friend from high school over there as well, so it's not as though I'm unsympathetic.

We all know there may be consequences of this. Lord knows I'm not far from NYC. We all wait to see what happens, but he needs to die.
NeverBeenThawed - December 30, 2006 12:50 AM (GMT)
I generally think that the death penalty is the easy way out for some criminals --- they don't have to live with their consequences, but in his case, I think it's about time.
Katie9 - December 30, 2006 12:51 AM (GMT)
I have to agree. I'm not the biggest fan of the death penelty, but for him, I think it's only fitting.
NWfan938 - December 30, 2006 12:58 AM (GMT)
Yeah, I'm usually against the death penalty, but I see it as the appropriate punishment for Saddam.

I agree with you. The death pently does fit him.
NeverBeenThawed - December 30, 2006 03:24 AM (GMT)
One of the Arab stations is reporting his execution has taken place.
carriekins - December 30, 2006 03:27 AM (GMT)
I definitely just sang "Ding Dong Saddam is Dead" to Michael (to the tune of "Ding Dong the Witch is Dead" from the Wizard of Oz).
About damn time.
NeverBeenThawed - December 30, 2006 03:29 AM (GMT)
My dad had plenty of his own sing-songy quips that I heard about, too.
Damn straight. About time.
nanajeanie - December 30, 2006 03:42 AM (GMT)
I agree with you guys about the death penalty. He deserved to die

Court - December 30, 2006 08:57 AM (GMT)
Wow.. they're releasing the first video from the execution on Fox News right now..
NeverBeenThawed - December 30, 2006 09:00 AM (GMT)
Jen - December 30, 2006 09:02 AM (GMT)
I feel sick to my stomach watching that..
NeverBeenThawed - December 30, 2006 09:06 AM (GMT)
I remember watching the execution early in the morning of Timothy McVeigh but for some reason I struggle to even be able to turn this on.
Jen - December 30, 2006 09:07 AM (GMT)
They're not showing the actual execution. They show bringing him into the room, and putting the black cloth around his neck, and then moving him up to the trapdoor and putting the noose around his neck, and then they stop it.
It's still just.. wow.
NeverBeenThawed - December 30, 2006 09:09 AM (GMT)
I turned it on, I see what they have shown, but I still struggle to keep it on.

Well you know me, I ain't going to hold back. Its LONG overdue. And while I have mix feelings about us being over there I am excited this took place. Little bit quicker and less painful then I would of hoped, but glad to hear he is dead.
Scrapbookgirl9 - December 30, 2006 07:24 PM (GMT)
good, thats all i have to say
Hollee - December 30, 2006 10:23 PM (GMT)
A very crappy and shaky video has been leaked showing his execution and his body post mortem. I watched it. I don't care who he was or anything...that was disturbing. Rotten.com also has a semi-decent (not exactly the best word but deal) picture of him post mortem.
carriekins - December 30, 2006 10:43 PM (GMT)
Why in the world would anybody want to see that? (Holls, nothing against you, just a rhetorical question.)
I shudder just thinking of it.
NeverBeenThawed - December 30, 2006 10:51 PM (GMT)
I couldn't watch that. While he was an awful person who did awful things, I can't watch him die.

BlondeyGirl - December 31, 2006 12:32 AM (GMT)
It kind of disturbs me that people happy about someone dying. As much as I dislike Saddam for what he's done, no one should receive the death penalty by any means. Two wrongs don't make a right. He should be locked up for life and be required to watch videos and see pictures, etc everyday to see what he's done for the rest of his life. That way thats all he can think about while in solitary confinement. The death penalty is nothing I can ever agree with, its like justifying killing and saying its OK. Its like an easy way out because he doesn't have to deal with his consequences.
NeverBeenThawed - December 31, 2006 12:44 AM (GMT)
I generally feel that way, but in this case, I made an exception. I think after he caused the deaths of so many people this was the only appropriate punishment.
AmeriKahneGirl924 - December 31, 2006 01:08 AM (GMT)
I agree, I feel that way too.

While I respect that, I must ask, do you really believe that keeping him locked up the rest of his life watching video of what he done is going to hurt him or bother his mind? He loved what he done, he saw no wrong, he has no heart about gassing little children and killing them and there family. Watching video's of the million lives that he took? IMO he would ask for popcorn and a ice cold vitamin water to see that film over and over. Was it wrong to kill him? IMO No. I believe in capital punishment.
I know a lot think that he should not of been killed, and again, I respect that, but I can not feel the same. Many feard him as they should. He was a sick man, worst then Hitler IMO
BTW Happy New Year to all.

I am kinda torn on this subject. I at first wanted him executed for the crimes he committed...but as I thought more about it, I thought maybe we should let him live in solitude with no special treatment, just 3 meals a day and no luxuries...so that maybe he can reflect on what he's done...but I agree with what RaizingKahne said, Saddam would love that, since he did think he had done nothing wrong.
My own country of origin and my family suffered through an awful dictator as well. And instead of seeing him brought to justice and punished for his crimes, he died...supposedly of the flu. So its hard for me to weigh in, because it has become a like a personal issue for me... I do believe in rehabilitation (to a certain extent..that issue is hard for me too) but having a family who's lives have been devastated by a dictator has led me to my conclusion. I think his punishment was fittting. Do I like it? No. Am I happy? No. But I do believe it was fitting and am relieved that its over with. Just my opinion, and I respect everyone else's too. You all have a point.
PS-Sorry for rambling on so much, it was just my thought process that led me to my end conclusion.

I think you said that very well.
I don't like the death penalty, but my issues tend to be with the fact that it's a punishment that can't be reversed if the person turns out to be not guilty. That isn't the case here. Saddam wouldn't have felt remorse for what he did, no matter how much it was pounded into his brain.
I find it weird and, yes, even a little disturbing to be happy about someone dying, no matter the circumstances. The best way for me to describe how I feel about this is to say I'm relieved.

Quite frankly, yes, I think it would bother him eventually if he would watch those videos and see pictures over and over. It might not at first, but if he would watch them over and over, I believe eventually it would bother him to see that. Then he'd realize how much hurt he has caused not only his family, but others as well. Also, I can see we're going to have to agree to disagree about the death penalty since we're not going to see eye to eye on it. No since in explaining my thoughts again about it when they are clearly stated in my above post.
;)

Thank you :) And I agree with what you said about the death penalty. I think my issues are the same as yours about it too.
Its 2007 guys! I hope you all had fun ringing it in! :)
