Melissa on fast track

The TV Guide Channel's Melissa Rivers, who normally covers the red carpet for most major awards ceremonies, can now add NASCAR Nextel Cup banquet to her resumé.

Rivers, the younger, and less surgically enhanced daughter of Joan Rivers, has been hired by SPEED TV to work the yellow carpet arrivals coverage of Friday's NASCAR ceremony held Friday at the Waldorf-Astoria.

Rivers will work alongside the network's regular hosts John Roberts, Jimmy Spencer, Kenny Wallace and Wendy Venturini. SPEED's banquet coverage will get underway at 7 p.m.

I guess I figured Wendy Venturini would do the interviews. Maybe Melissa is a NASCAR fan? Most likely NASCAR figured they might attract more photographers and more coverage (like from People or US Weekly, and the NY papers) of the yellow carpet if Melissa did the interviews. I think the pictures I saw last year were mostly from Motorsport and Autostock, and they cover all the NASCAR events anyway. So maybe they're trying to make it more of an "event".

I feel a little sorry for the wives, girlfriends and dates of the drivers though. With Melissa there, now they'll really be under scrutiny for what they are wearing and what they look like. :)

Uggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggh I can't stand Melissa OR Joan Rivers.

Between Weber hosting, Jewel performing, and Melissa doing interviews, I'm going to stab a spork in my eye before Friday even gets here.

I seriously fear for some of these guys. They're not all fashion forward. :whistle The Yellow Carpet Review ought to be hilarious. I hope she at least knows who the drivers are, because if she doesn't, people won't let her forget it.

Why the hell is Jewel performing? Who died and said she's relevant anymore? Her latest album sucks monkey balls, so why don't they get some real entertainment. I can't believe that everyone else was busy. I mean, can't they at least get someone other than Jewel? :bam

I don't understand NASCAR's love of Jewel. At all.

And the good news is that for the Banquet -- you can't really go wrong with a tux. Harvick got his a few months ago at my store, so I know he'll look good.

I think the drivers will be OK with their tuxes (it sounds like Kevin will be! :) ) - it's the women I'm worried about. I think what they're wearing will get more focus with Melissa there. Last year, the NASCAR Nation TV show people hosted the yellow carpet. The female reporter Shannon told everybody's wife or girlfriend they looked great, but I dont think she said "who (what designer) are you wearing?" like Melissa might.

But who knows, maybe the women will find that flattering. I know that Shana Mayfield said in their NASCAR.com column last year that she spent a lot of time choosing a dress and getting some store to lend her expensive jewelry.

It was funny, the male NASCAR Nation reporter (can't remember his name) tried to not mention anybody's clothes. He interviewed Jimmie Johnson and Jimmie's wife stood off (modestly) to the side. But when the guy tried to end the interview, Jimmie pulled his wife into the camera and said something like "You guys need to get a shot of my wife!" :lmbo So maybe some of the drivers do like the attention or like people seeing them dressed up for once. (His wife did look really pretty!).

I really don't see why they need a musical guest at the banquet.

Scrapbookgirl9 - November 29, 2006 12:55 PM (GMT)
ughhhh, another reason I'm not going to like most of the banquet.

This should be interesting, I give my full support to whatever driver tells her to shut the hell up first!!!
