Reese Witherspoon, Ryan Phillippe Split

LOS ANGELES - Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe, who started the year on an Oscar-winning high, are ending it on a low note: The couple have separated.

"We are saddened to announce that Reese and Ryan have decided to formally separate," publicist Nanci Ryder said in a statement issued Monday on behalf of the couple.

"They remain committed to their family and we ask that you please respect their privacy and the safety of their children at this time," the brief statement concluded. Ryder said she could not elaborate on the split.

Witherspoon, 30, and Phillippe, 32, have two children, 7-year-old Ava and 3-year-old Deacon. The couple, who co-starred in the 1999 movie "Cruel Intentions," married that year.

In March, Witherspoon won a best-actress Academy Award for her role as June Carter Cash in 2005's "Walk the Line." Phillippe co-starred in the best-picture winner, "Crash," and is starring in Clint Eastwood's latest film, the World War II drama "Flags of Our Fathers."

I'm sad. Reese and Ryan were one of my favorite Hollywood couples.

This is very sad to hear. Out of any Hollywood couple out there, I thought they had the best chance to make it. Hopefully they can settle their differences and not officially divorce.

I thought of all the young couples in hollywood they'd be able to surive the longest... and I guess they have.... they were married for far longer than 55 hours...

but what Hollywood couple or our era has? Not one I can think of

but its not just Hollywood most marriages don't make it anymore........this isn't 30, 40, 50 years ago when people just didn't normally divorce and its sad.

Yeah, like it's some fad. First it's having a baby, now its adopting babies in Africa (which I have nothing against)..is divorce the next big fad?

I bet Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes split within the first 2 years of their marriage. It seems to me like Tom is holding her hostage or something...just my opinion.

Although the rumors I'm hearing as to why they split... are just as shocking as the split... but i'm not going to give up hope...

Yeah. I think I heard something about Ryan screaming at Reese in front of people at the Flags of Our Fathers screening, saying that she embarassed him or something. And Reese didn't know what he was talking about.

Sorry i meant to spill a couple days ago...

all I've heard is that Ryan was cheating on Reese with his costar... and that they had a big ol' yell fest at the after party for Ryan's movie in NYC...

I really hope it's not true... i was reading intouch (yesI know a very reliable magazine :rolleyes: ) and they had "quoted" a friend as saying that they hope that they will get backtogether and kind of alluded to they're trying to work it out and all that jazz... but Reese also apparently highred Jennifer Annistons divorce lawyer...

I'm still sad and still holding out hope!

I heard that too about Ryan and his co-star. That's very sad news to hear. :(

I probably couldn't name a single movie either of them have done, nor could I identify them in a lineup.
