NeverBeenThawed - October 27, 2006 12:53 PM (GMT)
I don't care where we send it, just send it away! (Which makes me think, "Just give it away" which makes me think George Strait which is :hearts )

carriekins - October 27, 2006 03:22 PM (GMT)
The current radar from NOAA shows a bit of clearing just east of Birmingham, which is due west of Atlanta. We *might* get a break in a few hours. We shall see.

For the Weather Channel, this is Carrie, now back to you.

(if the rain stops, that is)

racefan9 - October 27, 2006 05:50 PM (GMT)
Go Kasey!

carriekins - October 27, 2006 06:25 PM (GMT)
Current radar (2:20 EST) shows clearing over the Alabama/Georgia state line, and that's what was in Birmingham at my earlier update. There's a decent chance it will stop raining around 6. The question becomes will they dry the track or just set it based on owners points? If they go with owners points, methinks Red Bull Racing and Bill Elliott will be mighty pissed.

I will keep you radar updated through the afternoon. :)

Court - October 27, 2006 06:26 PM (GMT)
I think they'll just go based on owner's points

Katie9 - October 27, 2006 06:35 PM (GMT)
Thank you weather girl Carrie

carriekins - October 27, 2006 06:37 PM (GMT)
It's what I wish I could have afforded to do. Maybe someday I'll go back to school...

Katie9 - October 27, 2006 06:38 PM (GMT)
Well for now you can be RK's personal weather girl :nod

carriekins - October 27, 2006 07:08 PM (GMT)
Parts of the Western Atlanta Metro area are seeing the rain come to an end.

There is actually still hope in this.

Peter - October 27, 2006 07:08 PM (GMT)
All events have been canceled for the day in Atlanta.

CanadianKahne - October 27, 2006 07:10 PM (GMT)

carriekins - October 27, 2006 07:11 PM (GMT)

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think Bill Elliott will be pissed cause Terry Labonte isn't racing is he? Shouldn't Bill get the provisional?

Now I do think Red Bull will be pissed though, cause they asked Bill to step aside and let their rookie for next year get some seat time, so they will miss the race. Bill is driving for a team that is now out of Dawsonville (his bro Ernie is building the engines), I think it is R&J racing or maybe J&R racing. There was an article on Nascar.com just a few days ago.

Because Bill was originally entered for Red Bull and switched to the 37, I don't think that he is eligible for the past champion's provisional...even if qualifying is rained out.

According to NASCAR.com’s lineup, Red Bull’s car and Bill Elliott have both missed the field.

carriekins - October 27, 2006 07:28 PM (GMT)
Do they give a Champions provisional in the event of a rainout? I can't imagine they do...

Interestingly, NASCAR.com just changed their lineup to allow Bill in the field. It looks like they do...even if the driver and car combination were entered after the entry deadline.

So, ignore my last post.

OK Nascar can be so confusing sometimes. I would have thought they made the driver changes soon enough that this would not be a problem. It seems like when Ray asked Bill to get in the car after Jeremy was out, they only missed the deadline by a couple of days, and that is why it was a problem there, but I guess I misunderstood the rules.

Well this sucks. I was really looking forward to Bill driving for this team out of Dawsonville.

Peter you are killin me here! :)

I am happy again for the moment. I guess until Peter decides to post that Nascar changed it again. LOL

By the way Peter, Do you know when the entry deadline is?

The entry deadline is 13 days before the race. Because Bill Elliott replaced Jeremy Mayfield in the 19 at Watkins Glen after that deadline, he wasn't eligible for the past champion's provisional there. I thought that the same thing might have happened again with the Elliott-Allmendinger switch. As a major Bill Elliott fan, it concerned me to see him listed in the "Did Not Qualify" list.

Thankfully, NASCAR added him to the field. But, unfortunately, Kasey will have to wait until Texas to get his 6th pole of the season.

Rain cancels qualifying for Cup race at Atlanta
Points leader Kenseth will start on Bud Pole for Sunday's race
By Ryan Smithson, NASCAR.COM

03:42 PM EDT (19:42 GMT)

HAMPTON, Ga. -- Persistent heavy rain wiped out all track activity at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Friday, forcing NASCAR to set the Nextel Cup Series lineup by owners points.

Chase leader Matt Kenseth will start from the pole for the first time this season.

The wipeout of events will also postpone the Nextel Cup debut of A.J. Allmendinger, who was attempting to make the Nextel Cup Bass Pro Shops 500 in Team Red Bull's No. 84 Dodge. Ironically, Bill Elliott, who made the race with a past champions' provisional, was initially slated to drive the No. 84.

The rain was so bad on Friday that six Nextel Cup regulars left early to head to Memphis to practice for Saturday's Sam's Town 250 Busch Series race.

The rain also affects the schedule for Saturday.

The Craftsman Truck Series will have an 80-minute practice starting at 9 a.m. ET, followed by Nextel Cup practice at 10:30 a.m. Final practice for the Bass Pro Shops 500 will be at 12:05 p.m., and qualifying for the truck race is scheduled to follow the Cup Happy Hour.

It was the second time this season that Atlanta Motor Speedway has been plagued by rain. The spring Nextel Cup race was postponed by weather until Monday, when Kasey Kahne won from the pole.

The weather is expected to improve considerably for the weekend. Saturday's forecast calls for partly cloudy skies with temperatures in the high 60s, and Sunday's forecast calls for sunny skies and temperatures near 70.

Thanks Peter! Glad to see you haven't come back to post that Nascar changed their minds and bumped him. :)

I didn't realize the deadline was almost 2weeks prior. I think it must have been a close call for Bill and that is why they originally had him missing the race.
