I didn't know if anyone cared, but I thought I'd tell you about my Journey/Def Leppard experience (especially since they keep adding new dates to the tour... Some of you might want to go. *shrugs*)
Journey came out first of the two bands. They rocked! I've seen them 5 times before, but this show just seemed to hit me. My sister always does this goofy thing at Journey concerts where once Neal Schon (the guitarist) starts playing, she starts crying. It's weird. I always thought she was nuts. I understand the "Woah, here's a guy that has been such a part of my entire life through his music" feeling, but it never made me cry.
I understand it now. For those of you that don't know, I think that Journey's drummer, Deen Castronovo, is some sort of drummer god. I adore the man. Jonathan Cain (keyboardist) started playing the opening notes for "Open Arms" and the lights around Deen lit up and he started singing. I gasped, put my hand over my mouth, and tears came to my eyes. Deen is my Neal (if that made any sense whatsoever).
Jeff Scott Soto was filling in singing lead and he's good. I like him. I've grown to love Steve Augeri as the lead singer, and I hope his throat infection heals soon so he can come back, but in the meantime, Jeff was a good fill-in.
Journey did songs that I have never heard them perform live before. It was awesome. I was jamming and laughing at the Def Leppard fans that didn't know any of the songs.
But they got their revenge. I learned tonight that I don't know anything about Def Leppard. I recognized a few songs... Hysteria, Photograph, Love Bites, Pour Some Sugar on Me... But it turns out that I don't know the words... My dad was bored out of his mind, but I refused to leave until they did Pour Some Sugar on Me, and of course, I predicted that it would be their encore. In fact, I predicted Journey's too... It was Separate Ways (Worlds Apart).
Jeff Scott Soto wore some Tigers gear while he sang "Don't Stop Believin'." Joe Elliott of Def Leppard wore Tigers gear too, but by then it just felt like a gimmick... Journey has always been very Detroit loving and they write about Detroit in their songs... So it felt right with them. With Joe, it was weird...
Twas an awesome night and I got an awesome shirt (yay Escape album cover... *ahem*) and I figure my hearing will return to normal in a few days... :)
So if you get a chance to go see this tour, it's seriously worth it.
Sweet! I cared! That sounds awesome and would be awesome.
It's funny, because right as I saw Journey, 'Don't stop believing' popped into my head.
Glad you had a great time!!
