Title: trackpass

ridinwithclyde - September 5, 2006 07:40 PM (GMT)
Just called Trackpass and the guy said they were looking into the nine car.
I ask if he thought he would be back after the Chase race and he sounded
like he really could not tell me but he did say "we think so"

Eh, we'll see what happens. Hopefully they do come back once the Chase has been decided. Thanks for the info!

I won't be home for the races until the next NBC race now anyways, but this sucks. I don't think it really matters one way or the other. Its not like fans can talk to Kasey and distract him

Evernham Takes Another Anti-Fan Shot

By Christopher Soloy email

This is a followup piece to a submission made two weeks ago. For background into please go to Fan Involvement Damaged by Evernham before continuing.

Leading into the events at Bristol Motor Speedway this weekend, the number one conversation among Kasey Kahne fans in particular, was the shocking refusal by Ray Evernham to continue to supply scanner feeds to TrackPass subscribers for any of his drivers.

In response many Kasey Kahne fans are withdrawing their consumer support for TrackPass. This did not hurt Scott Riggs fans too much, because his feed had not been carried this year. I suspect that his scanner fed is actually scrambled at the track, and as a partnership, with Valvoline as the co-owner, there are more parties involved in any decision or approval concerning that team. Elliot Sadler had been the "Voted in" feed for the Bristol event, obviously creating a lot of unhappy fans when the vote could not be honored.

Raymond had just settled one court-based confrontation for breaking the terms of a contract. It would seem he'd learned the cost of that kind of effort, no matter what his opinion may be of the outcome. Risking that kind of trouble, indicates some greater trouble if he didn't withdraw from his agreement.

Luckily (in a sideways way) I'd had plans to go to Bristol Wednesday that were canceled--I had the funding and means set aside and heading up on Saturday instead was not a far stretch (Thanks go to Jo Ann for helping with the last minute change in plans).

As far as actual race day communications went on the EMS scanner feeds, i didn't hear anything that could be construed as damaging to EMS. I asked myself why Raymond would want to hide conversations from fans, if they didn't constitute a problem? Does he consider the fans dangerous? Is there some paranoia involved or does he consider this a pre-emptive strike?

When entertainment-industry celebrities have some controversial happenings in their lives--like a wedding, birth, or divorce--some of the celebrities like to control media access to keep papparazzi and crazed fans out of the picture. Most past racing divorces have been handled in a similar but more effective manner. The first that fans heard of Brett Bodine's divorce, for example, was when his ex-wife was arrested and made defamatory claims to connect her crime to his team. The price is far higher at EMS of having similar events to Bodine's, due to Dodge's arrangement for Evernham as the sole source of exclusive Dodge parts and support to other teams. However, no scanner chatter carried any information discussing those topics. Erin wasn't running the team. No driver made any comments about Raymond's personal life. Nothing indicated that pulling the TrackPass feeds were a professional, personal, or appropriate measure.

So the next issue to consider is competition secrets...the EMS teams could have been doing something specific that they didn't want the other teams to pick up on. The appropriate response in that case would be to scramble all the feeds, not just Scott Riggs' feed.

There are a few other potential explanations, but the last one that I will examine is the potential for disgruntled employees to voice disparaging comments over the scanner. The remaining concepts seem too unlikely or bizarre too discuss. New employee Elliot Sadler did seem to have a driving style for the first 60 laps that was distinctly unlike him, but then he settled into his regular driving style afterwards. It seemed like he had been put under excessive pressure just before the race started, and relaxed once he focused on the race instead of the pressure. Without being privy to events before the race, I cannot say what the pressure came from. I have to wonder if it's something Sadler could potentially become unhappy about. This was supposed to be a happy solution to Raymond's view of the problems within his own team, but reveal instead that the former driver wasn't the problem. How upset could Kasey get if, after all the changes Raymond made to stack the deck in Kahne's favor, he still cannot get into the Chase this year? How upset can Dodge get, especially when the twice-Chase-contending team was sacrificed? If I were Raymond and asking myself the same questions, I think I'd have found the *greater trouble* that would justify hurting the fans.

It's still justification. In the end it is a fan's response that really determines support for any team. Sponsors make decisions based on the fans actions as consumers. That is, if fans keep buying Dodges because of Kasey and Elliot driving them in spite of any personal issues, then Dodge will stick with EMS. Keeping a divorce "low-profile" did not save Brett Bodine's team, or get him a sponsor. Raymond has justified a decision to hurt fans some more, and their consumer-buying decisions are changing as a result.

ImprezdGurl - September 10, 2006 03:04 AM (GMT)
I found this online. At least it's one explanation as to why there was no trackpass, but I really doubt Jeremy would do something like this.

Q. What's up with Evernham Motorsports and the raceday scanners and Trackpass?
A. Several readers have emailed complaining that Ray Evernham recently pulled his team's frequencies from the raceday scanners and Trackpass on NASCAR.com.

Sources tell TGOM that Ray Evernham suspended the in-car audio because he was concerned about Jeremy Mayfield having the access codes to channels used to make crucial racing decisions and that he might use them to the detriment of other teams.
