CONCORD, N.C. - Scott Riggs, who sat on the pole for the Nextel Open last week, is back on the pole for another race at Lowe's Motor Speedway.

Riggs will sit on the pole for the Coca-Cola 600 this Sunday. He turned a lap of 187.865 mph in his Evernham Motorsports Dodge on Thursday night, and will lead the field with teammate Jeremy Mayfiled on the outside.

"Jeremy was the one I had to worry about," Riggs said. "All of the guys at Evernham Motorsports are doing a fantastic job working as one team."

The pole speed of 187.865 mph was much slower than the record set last October by Elliott Sadler, who turned a lap of 193.216 mph. The track has been repaved and the drivers are using a much harder tire than last season.

Jimmie Johnson, who has won the last four Cup races at the track, will start third.

Among those not making the field was Michael Waltrip, who ranked sixth with a streak of 261 consecutive starts. He had not missed a race since the Phoneix event Oct. 25, 1998.

Eight drivers made the field on speed: Johnny Sauter, Terry Labonte, David Stremme, Travis Kvapil, Kenny Wallace, Paul Menard, Scott Wimmer and Derrike Cope.

In addition to Waltrip nine drivers missed the race: Kevin Lepage, Hermie Sadler, Chad Chaffin, Stanton Barrett, Mike Garvey, Chad Blount, Carl Long, Kirk Shelmerdine and Kertus Davis.

All results are unofficial pending post-qualifying inspection.
