Elliott's 2006 plans still unclear: Bill Elliott says he hasn't finalized his plans for next season but wants to drive in selected races for Evernham Motorsports. Phasing out as a driver works well for Bill Elliott

JUSTIN, Texas - Bill Elliott, who'll start ninth in Sunday's Dickies 500 for his ninth NASCAR Nextel Cup start of the season, said he's happy with the part-time schedule he's run after walking away from full-time competition.
"I don't think I could have ever done it cold turkey," Elliott said. "It's hard to get away."

Elliott said his situation is different from other veterans who are looking at the end of their careers.

"I'm being used as a tool for the future," Elliott said. "Sometimes performance at the end of the day is not what we're looking for. Don't get me wrong, we want to run good. ... (But) every race we ran early last year was basically (in) an unsponsored car, and we were doing research and development on the chassis.

"This year, we've got sponsors that want to have a taste for NASCAR.

... We're bringing sponsors along who want to get their feet wet ... and we're able to customize the program for whatever comes along."

Well, that's pretty cool!

If Yall know me, you know that I am a HUGE Bill fan! This is very exciting news! At Atlanta a few weeks ago, I was talking to the guy that worked at the souvenir hauler, and he was saying that Bill was wanting to run even more races in '06 than he ran this year. Said he had been working on some sponsorship, so hopefully, Bill will get to run as much as he wants to in '06.
