Title: Anti-rant

Realist. - October 31, 2007 10:32 PM (GMT)
QUOTE
Recently at my school, we had a few people who made up a "dance routine"

Good for them! isn't that what Ocyras is about? Inspiring creativity, in a school system that doesn't?
QUOTE
Some people were goofing off during the "lesson", so the students who were teaching the routine wrote a complaint letter to the principal naming exactly who was goofing off

What's wrong with that?
QUOTE
The students knew they were going to get a bad mark on it anyway (yes, we were getting marked on it) so they decided to just... not really do it.

Even in our.. under-standards education system, shouldn't they at least try? Let's take you for an example. You talk of a horrible education system. But you speak (type) with maturity upon your (estimated) years. To put it simply, you're smart enough. So that must mean that the education system is doing something right, no matter what their shortcomings are.
QUOTE
The main point is, why would you complain about one silly little thing, when there are far greater and much more important problems in the world. War, poverty, child labour, the list goes on and on.

Would you say war, poverty and child labour is more important than the education system in some first world country? Most would. That is because it is more important than the education system. But will complaining about child labour stop it? No. Likewise, will complaining about the education system will not either. You have to do something. Now before you start yelling, I know Ocyras is a "movement". If you truly want to maintain a "professional" air, the Rants section has to go. Do you have a blog? You should create one if you don't. That is what you should rant on.
QUOTE
But no, people only want to complain about things that directly effect them.

Like you! Do you think me, or my husband, or anyone I know cares about the education system? We don't! I don't see you ranting about poverty either. In truth, this is just human nature. If it doesn't affect them (it should be affect, by the way. Another failure of the education system, I suppose) then they don't care.
QUOTE
So, if you're gonna complain, it should be about something worthwhile.

What is "worthwhile" is an opinion. While the education may be worthwhile to you, it may not be for starving African kids, nor anyone who has graduated from university or college (or if they are enrolled in a private university.)

QUOTE
You may be thinking, "Well, you should feel lucky to have an education! Most of those kids in Africa don't!" I agree with you partially. But, our school system is quite terrible right now. It really needs to be changed. Millions of kids suffer in school every day. They need help as much (well, maybe not quite as much) as anyone else.

Terrible is decidedly better than none.

Moved to discuss ocyras

A few things:

I actually DO rant about poverty and stuff, just not on Ocyras...

What I meant by that rant is that don't only take the initiative to complain about something that only affects YOU or A VERY SMALL GROUP OF PEOPLE. If you are at least trying to do something about the world's bigger problems, then by all measn you can take initiative on the smaller problems as well.

I didn't mean to anger anybody, really...

Also, I'm not getting rid of the rants section! It's kind of like a "blog"... many "professional" and popular websites have blogs... in my opinion, it's a good thing for Ocyras. As you said,

I really should expand on this, so here:

QUOTE

Yes. What's wrong with it is that the entire grade was forced to learn and rehearse the routine.

QUOTE
What's wrong with that?

They weren't really goofing off that much. Just talking mostly.

QUOTE
Even in our.. under-standards education system, shouldn't they at least try?

They did try. They then realized the dance routine was above their skill level and began to goof off.

QUOTE
Let's take you for an example. You talk of a horrible education system. But you speak (type) with maturity upon your (estimated) years. To put it simply, you're smart enough. So that must mean that the education system is doing something right, no matter what their shortcomings are.

There are also kids who drop out of school, commit suicide from being bullied all the time at school, and do very poorly in school, so they also are clearly doing something wrong. I know you already realize that, but it had to be said.

QUOTE
Would you say war, poverty and child labour is more important than the education system in some first world country? Most would.

Yes.

QUOTE
But will complaining about child labour stop it? No. Likewise, will complaining about the education system will not either. You have to do something.

Exactly. That's why we started Ocyras.

QUOTE
Now before you start yelling

I have found yelling over the Internet to be quite difficult. Besides, I am not the type to start flame wars on the Internet. That's Vic's job.

QUOTE
If you truly want to maintain a "professional" air, the Rants section has to go. Do you have a blog? You should create one if you don't. That is what you should rant on.

I don't need a "professional" air. I would prefer a "rebellious" air, since that's mostly what Ocyras is about.

QUOTE
Do you think me, or my husband, or anyone I know cares about the education system? We don't!

You should care. Your tax dollars are paying for it.

QUOTE
I don't see you ranting about poverty either.

You don't see me because I don't do it on Ocyras.

QUOTE
In truth, this is just human nature. If it doesn't affect them (it should be affect, by the way. Another failure of the education system, I suppose) then they don't care.

And Ocyras is here to raise the matter to people's attention, so they do care.

QUOTE
What is "worthwhile" is an opinion.

Too true.

QUOTE
Terrible is decidedly better than none.

In this case, yes. In some cases, no.

----------------------------------------------------

Basically, yes, there are much more important things to worry about, but you see, there's already tons of causes devoted to most of those things. And while I do support them whole-heartedly, I choose to devote myself to a cause that is often overlooked: our school system.
