Title: Immortality

this is copypasted.... sue me

I came up with this really weird question just out of the blue today, so I figured I'd pitch it here.

Question: Would you accept immortality on the catch that you could never leave the confines of where your house stands?

Strings attached:
- Sure, you can stand at the window or door and stare outside, but can't go there.
- Anything you have now or might get in the future is free reign. Chat all day long on the internet or watch television, I don't care.
- People can visit you if you want. You just can't go to them, obviously.
- If for some reason your house is destroyed, you still can't leave the exact outline of where it used to stand.
- You can't get hurt, sick, or die. If your house burns down, nuclear fallout leaves your town deserted, and you go hungry, that's too bad. You're alone. Have fun.

I'm expecting a lot of no's, personally. Don't be silly and say you'd die of hunger or thirst or something. Seriously, if you were forced to live where your house stands and given immortality as a result, would you do it? You'd see humanity advance long past your friends, but you'd be bored as heck after a month unless the internet delights you that much. I suppose you'd be carpal-tunnel-proof.

Added a poll so people don't have to look through pages of replies (if this gets that far.) The poll only allows clear-cut answers, but feel free to post whatever opinion you have.

Addition:

No one else, just you.

I suddenly realized all the religious complications, especially with afterlife possibly being better than this. For the sake of argument, pretend you don't have a religion or anything to look forward to upon dying.

Also, you can't kill yourself by going outside. You just can't leave, period. Invisible wall, I guess.

Now when it comes down to the concept of live life to the fullest, saying no would be the core of that statement. There are pros and cons to both options. I would imagine life would be very boring if you stayed alive forever with no family or friends. Yes, people can come visit you, but I'm assuming, based on some of the other restrictions, that they cannot stay there for very long, maybe no more than a day or two. If you choose to live life forever in the same area, then you lose so much. You lose the feeling of travel, taking a relaxing walk, going out to dinner with a friend or a family member, and simply seeing things. There would be no anticipation... The only thing to look forward to are advancements in technology and earth, such as the PlayStation 7945, an iPod that is 1 atom thick, etc. However, I suppose you could see how your family lives... But that may turn out to be a downside... You see, if you get so used to seeing the same thing, like say a mini mart across from your home, and all of a sudden it disappears, it would be a longing memory in the past. That of course would also relate to family... You would watch as your children die, your grand children, everyone you ever loved would die. You may not even have the chance to say good bye to them. The friends you make from your window side would also eventually perish. Everything that you ever loved or would ever love would disappear in time. The earth would eventually be something completely different from your time, and even that completely different world would eventually change. All while this is going on, you're in a home that has become disgustingly familiar to you... A constant reminder of the deal you made. Eventually, that home will be gone, too. A bypass may need to be built, it may be destroyed in a war, or just fall apart as the years progress. So eventually, you're a homeless person with nothing left to love or care for, watching as everything passes you and eventually disappears. No matter what you do, you cannot die... Or be hurt. One day, the planet will spiral into the sun, or it will be destroyed by other means. Years after that, the universe will also be destroyed. No more internet to keep you sane, no more people to talk to. But you will remain there forever, because you are immortal and you cannot die, or be hurt. Even if there are other universes, you may only be able to see them from a distance, as you cannot leave your confined space. So you would be there for eternity, with no one to speak to, nothing to learn, nothing to pass the eternal time...

I say no. Being immortal isn't THAT good. Preventing somebody from dying is thousand of times worse than death. I already find myself bored in my current life. I don't need to live forever to do what I want to do in life. I can't do anything I want to do if I stay within the boundaries of my house. Life has no purpose if it goes on forever, so I wouldn't even want immortality if I could go anywhere I wanted to.

Well put. I agree completely.
