Title: Rate The Parting of the Ways
Description: Emergency Poll

OddsOn - June 19, 2005 08:42 AM (GMT)
As Dan seems to have disappeared due to unknown circumstances, I though I'd better put up a temporary poll until he manages to get back on line.

So rate it before the Bad Wolf comes and gets you!

5 for me. I think this was probably the best episode of the season. It had everything - excitement, suspense, emotion, loads of Daleks, and a new Doctor.

Simply fantastic!

Oldmankrondas Mk II - June 19, 2005 11:56 AM (GMT)
It really did have it all, hoardes of Daleks, breathtaking action sequences, genuine tear-jerking moments, a kiss that actually worked, regeneration....hang on....it's all over til Christmas!

Serendipity - June 19, 2005 12:08 PM (GMT)
I HAVEN'T SEEN IT!!!!!  . There is going to be a murder committed in my house. I had to go out, so set up the VCR to record the episode - but some 'dear' person in my house turned it off. At the moment no-body has been brave enough to confess :grr:. There all keep swearing it wasn't them. Hex has said I can watch his copy but I won't get to see it until tomorrow. That seems ages away.

Set up an independant inquiry Serendipity, but don't get Lord Hutton or Lord Butler, they'll just exonerate your housemates!

I had a similar problem with the ultimate guide.

I was recording it and five minutes from the end I realised it was on the wrong channel  :grr:

You didn't miss much. I missed the first few minutes, but most of it appeared to be nothing more than a DWC compilation. I'm pretty sure that there was nothing new in it at all.

Smitty - June 19, 2005 01:54 PM (GMT)
I give it a 5. I loved it for all the the same reasons stated above. The kiss really took me by surprise but I thought it was really good :D

I am not to sure about this episode. Granted, their were some breath-taking scenes, particularly the number of Daleks, but some of the ideas about the Daleks didn't ring true to me. I also didn't feel the final scene between Chris and Billie was particularly well done or acted, considering some of the scenes they have producd through the series. In addition, the new Doctor wasn't going to introduce himself as the Doctor, was he? I wonder if that will be followed up in the Christmas special. It may also just be me, but I don't feel Bad Wolf was explained particularly well, either. Clear as mud to me.

Will need to watch it again a few times more, me thinks.

Yeah, I must admit that I wasn't too clear on that myself. I think I get the gist of it but like you I think I need to watch that a few times again.

Top marks for me, what a finish to a brilliant New Series.

I really cannot wait for the Christmas Special.

The Bad Wolf theme appearing throught e entire series was a master stroke by RTD and I wouldn;t have thought it was Rose and she was pivotal to the ending of the series (in some way she was more important to the programme than The Doctor himself).

My Brother watched it yesterday for the first time in years and he doen't like the programme, but my Mum and him watched it and they enjoyed the episode (rang my Dad to wich him Happy Fathers Day and mentioned whether he watched it or not, he didn't but they did).

Chevie the Sheep - June 19, 2005 05:13 PM (GMT)
5/5. Great episode, though not flawless. Would have preferred to see the Doctor save the day rather than Rose but you can't have everything and what we got was superbly done. Mickey let the side down a bit - a touch wooden, particularly next to Billie who was on top form. Regeneration done very well, though I would have prefererd to see the Doctor 'die' (hmm... that sounds rather sadistic...).

Anyway, that sounds like a lot of criticisms but really I loved it. Oh yes - and although I'm not at all one of those that deplored the so-called 'soft' Dalek in Dalek - quite the reverse - wasn't it nice to see them being really nasty and ruthless. The mass extermination scene on floor 100 (?) was really rather chilling.

Hex - June 19, 2005 07:21 PM (GMT)
Watched it again and some bits aren't so good. I feel the pacing of the episode is a let down again; I thought RTD was getting it right with the last few of his stories. The inclusion of Mickey and Jackie wasn't really necessary. The whole Rose-going-home-thing just seemed to detract from the main story to me, not highten it. Not quite sure how the Doctor could tell every cell in his body was dying and that he would regenerate just by looking at his hand. It seemed a very quick end to the Dalek menace; a rather convenient way. If the Doctor knew Jack was alive, why didn't he wait for him instead of just flying off?

5/5, FAntastic.

i was on the edge of my seat the whole way through!

OddsOn - June 19, 2005 09:50 PM (GMT)
It only gets 4/5 from me. Rose as Bad Wolf just doesn't make any sense and neither does her sending the words throughout time and space so that she and the Doctor will pick up on them.

The pacing of the script was all over the place - someone really needs to teach RTD how to set up a plotline and follow it through.

Overall, the story was not as good as it should've been and was a bit of a disappointment given the implications of the central theme. Shame.

StephenHannan - June 19, 2005 10:27 PM (GMT)
4/5 for me.

what didn't work for me was the Tardis acting through Rose being Bad Wolf. Really how some people think it was actually Rose beats me.

That in future we now have absolutely no fear. If ever the situation is so bad then there is always the last resort which is to use the powers of the Tardis to resolve the problem albeit that it might cost a regeneration.

what did work was the appearance of the new Doctor. Nice and simple touch with a whole new character suddenly stamping an identity in just a few words and facial expressions.

meomwt - June 20, 2005 09:49 AM (GMT)
Top marks here, for only the third time in the series. A great episode, the Daleks are on top form and Jack seems to come into his own.

This shows how The Doctor has progressed and grown over the series. He is, truly, re-humanising. After Rose I posted that he was inhuman because he didn't tell Rose that Mickey might still be alive after the wheelie bin had taken him. Now, he sends he back home so that she won't have to face the Dalek Menace.

There were at least three ways I thought The Doctor might be forced to regenerate, and temporal infection from the Heart of the TARDIS wasn't one of them. Another Doctor who dies a heroic death saving a companion. Outstanding.

RTD has hinted we won't be seeing Daleks again, but I'm sure there's another Dalek story in there somewhere...

mrmatt - June 20, 2005 11:55 AM (GMT)
Wow FANTASTIC :D . 5/5

Liked the lots of daleks, Jack is a really great character. The effects were really impressive. Nick Briggs was on top Dalek-y form in his roles. Billie is a really good actress and this episode showed a good example of her range. I actually felt sad with the message the Doctor left. Like the last lines, beats carrot juice, carrot juice anyday. The regeneration was great, nicely done and we could see more of a change. Nice heroic death. Chris you were right you were fantastic.

Beowulf - June 20, 2005 12:18 PM (GMT)
I hope Jack's back next series, didnt like his being left behind! :(

armadillozenith - June 20, 2005 12:30 PM (GMT)
4/5, Great but not fantastic. The hordes of Daleks and their fleet seemed too flat to me... somehow they seemed more threatening in the old days, when they were less visibly overwhelming.

(What a gripe eh!)

I liked the climax, quite unexpected... 'Let this old box die' etc and Rose's saving the day... and having to BE saved, by a kiss! And restoring Jack (and the others slain?) to life (like the 'sentimental old' TARDIS did, in the TV movie).

Mickey's role and Jackie's turnaround were fun.

One OTHER gripe though...

Will someone PLEASE tell Mickey, Jackie and Rose (and the scriptwriters) that if you're trying to pull something loose from the console, far better to back your vehicle up as far as the TARDIS door then accelerate forward with a sudden YANK when the chain pulls taut (having built up momentum first) than to rev it in a stationary position, burning up rubber on the road? It's pretty basic really. Go on try it... you'll see what I mean. ;) ;)

If the Doctor'd been there, he would have told them.

Graham

5/5 FAN-BL00DY-TASTIC!

It was great... I got the whole Bad Wolf thing. It was a message through out the series, it repeated so often they eventually knew that it meant something and it was a message. Rose got that it was a message and then, when she controlled time she send the message out so she'd get it!

Temperal Mechanics all of it!

I just really enjoyed it I guess.

5/5 ...It was great... I got the whole Bad Wolf thing...

I just really enjoyed it I guess.

How wrong was I? (But, I DID enjoy it too, nonetheless).

I'd been thinking at times that it was maybe the Doctor himself, Adam Mitchell/van Statten, or Captain Jack...

But by the Friday I'd come up with this theory:

Bad Wolf = Face of Boe

and

Face of Boe = Davros!

It's logical. Look. Gwen tells Rose in Unquiet Dead that Rose has seen the Bad Wolf. She has just seen F.o.B. in the previous episode.

F.o.B. doesn't do or say much in that story. Heck of a size of prop to make just for a thin role in End of the World and a screenshot in Long Game. Must be more to come!

Both Face of Boe and Davros are monumental bigheads ;)

Both are incapable of independent movement, sustained within life-support travel machines.

I figured either: Davros had genetically enhanced himself (his speciality remember) to magnify his brain and extend his lifespan (with a facelift for improved public relations!), gaining a covert position of influence (banker) within the human world, a la Revelation of the Daleks, in order to manufacture his new Dalek army;
or
Face of Boe was a simulacrum, a fake, an elaborate disguise within which the original Davros was concealed... to similar effect.

Need I say more to convince you?

Ok then:

Also, 'Face of Boe' is a sort of anagram/Spoonerism for 'base of foe'.
What is the Doctor's archetypal foe? Daleks! and Davros's chair has a 'Dalek' base. Also Davros IS the 'base' (basis, origin) of the Dalek foe.

It's all so obvious.

Pity I was wrong.

Wait though... Could I still be right? Was 'The Parting of the Ways' just an elaborate red herring, to throw us all off the scent?... Was the Emperor Dalek we saw just a simulacrum being remotely controlled from afar by the REAL mastermind - Davros/Face of Boe?...

Will the Christmas Special re-open this mystery?...

...And will The Face of Boe/Davros reappear in a key role in the new series?

You heard it here first.

;) Graham

I knew something exceptional had to happen before The Unquiet Dead was knocked of it's poll position as my fav for the season. I certainly didn't expect it to be an RTD story that did it as his have been amongst the weakest of this series for me.

However, The Parting of the Ways WAS exceptional and looked like it could have been produced by the Great George Lucas himself. This was truly 'Fantastic' being scary, exciting and emotional at the same time. I loved the message The Doctor sent to Rose and the Regeneration was spot on IMHO without being over played. Billie Piper was great in this one and I am so glad she will still be around for most of the next season. Pity CE won't be as he has done a great job bringing our favourite Timelord back to the screens. He will be missed. The Doctor is dead...long live The Doctor!

This gets the full 5/5 from me!
