Title: Foam 3D airplanes

user posted imageLately if you've been out to the flying field you've seen me flying my new electric powered foam airplane. There's been quite a bit of interest so I thought that I'd start a thread with some information. The kit/foam plane is called a 3DX. I believe it was invented by Tim H (not sure of his last name) who started experimenting with house siding foam, nihm batteries and retimed brushed motors. The results were very suprising and with the recent development in li poly batteries and brushless motors you can now get incredible performance.

The setup that I'm using is:

Kokam 3 cell 1500 mah Li Poly battery
Castle Creations Pheonix 25 speed controller
E-flight Park 370 brushless motor, 4100k
GWS D geared motor, 6:6:1 gearing
3 Hitec 55 series servos
Hitec feather receiver
Hitec single conversion crystal
Hobbico MKII li poly charger
GWS electric 12X6 prop
Fan Fold insulation from lowes

IF you don't want to 'scratch build' the 3dx, Hobbytown sells the shockflier airplane that comes with brushed motor, pushrods etc for a good price.

Here is a thread with lots of info about the 3dx, building and flying results

Well today I was ready to fly my brand new Edge 540 foamy airplane. After everything was set up I took off and the plane promptly rolled inverted and crashed about 20 feet away :3dCrash: . After investigation I had the Ail. backwards :banghead: . Oh well, next is a YAK.

Added new link to the list. It's the latest foam plane that Roger and Billy have bought. Looks like a real winner!! It's called the Tuff E and it's sold by North east sail planes

This is my newest foamy. It is round 2, after I crashed the Edge. This is a foamy Sukoi powered by a HiMax 4100 with a 6.6 gearbox. Fly's great with 15-20 min flight time!!

That looks great Billy. Did you paint it?

Billyfrost - September 3, 2004 12:56 PM (GMT)
Yes, I painted it. It looks better in the picture!!
