hi i was just given a rc f-18 its been along time since i had a plane. the rear wing is broke. the planes is balsa wood some of the wing is still attached to the fusalage. and seems fixable. was just wondering if anyone had any input on the best way to fix it. should i just try and glue it then put the skin on it, or should i remove what is still there and just make a new rear wing for it. i have no directions for it the guy just gave it to me. it is a pusher type plane NOT turbine. if that helps any. like i said it been a long time since i had a plane so any help is great thanks
If you could get a picture that would make it much easier...
Yes, a photo would be nice.
I'm assuming the stabilizer wing is not ripped off totally, just broken, and no wood is missing. In either case, the following repair should work. If the stabilizer is still intact, I would not build a new one.
If it's a simple break, like in the sticks of balsa that form the horizontal stabilizer, you can carefully cut away the covering ON THE BOTTOM of the stab, to get access to the break or breaks. (The bottom, so that the repair will not be visible from the top.)
If the breaks are simply breaks in balsa sticks, just carefully push the broken pieces together, Doublecheck and make sure the broken stab is straight and looks like the mirror image of the other side. Then use THIN CA glue (the superglue you buy in a hobby store), and drip it on the break(s). Not much! Just one drop or two. Don't spill it! The glue will dry and set within seconds! And DO NOT use medium or thick CA for this step.
If you need to, and if it's possible, you can try to sand any rough surfaces on the repaired wood. A small wooden nail file women use to file their nails can be used, or you can make one out of a popsicle stick and some fine sandpaper.
Then replace the covering where needed, by ironing on a new piece.
If you have never done that, and need separate instructions, let me know.
If you live near our flying field in Irvington, Alabama, and would like for us to look at it, bring the plane and the glue and the covering and we'll gladly help you.
