Title: I'm swearing off kits

Mike - November 28, 2005 01:15 AM (GMT)
Well, no kits unless I want to do somewhat of a scale project down the line. For this everyday flying stuff, I can't take putting a couple hundred hours into a plane just to lose it thanks to the failure of a 15 cent piece of plastic.

For those that don't know, my 2 day/5 flight old Bridi Vagabond met its demise this afternoon when it refused to pull out of a 40 degree dive. I was able to throttle back, so it probably only made impact around 60-80 mph or so. After some diagnostic work I've determind that the servo horn on the elevator servo broke when I tried to pull out of the dive, and that was that. It was fun while it lasted though.

Now, to find a nice affordable ARF that'll accept a YS .45 with a tuned pipe and not tear the wings (or servo horns) off within the first handful of flights.

And for the obligatory carnage shot:

Ouch!!! I missed that one... I used to have a patriot with a ys 45. Very nice combo.

I had one back in the day as well, with this same engine in it...that thought did cross my mind. I think they made a Patriot ARF, didn't they? And I still have the retracts for it!

They did make a patriot arf for awhile but I don't think that you can get them anymore. Another good plane (that I flew today) is the ultrasport 40. They used to put that out in an arf also. The kaos is a good arf too! If you want aerobatic/3d the u can do 40 is a good arf. Of course there's always the ugly sticks etc.....

Mike, sorry about the Vagabond's demise. It was a nice flying plane! And it gave me and my Shrike a great, adrenaline-pumping race!

Ah, the Patriot! I had one around 1993 or so...

I know that is a Patriot, but that can't be the Frits we all know.

Mr. Mike,
You did it good.
A most spectacular crash.

I would vote for the Ultra Sport 40 in the ARF if they make one.
Just your kind of plane.

Just happened to find this on ebay

I'll keep an eye on that auction. Though I want to say those Ultra Sport ARFs had the old thin foam covering instead of a Monokote finish like several other ARFs of the time...not a fan of that. I've got my eye on a potential next plane, but I'm holding off on it for a bit. I'll just fly the Cessna when I feel the need for speed.

You're right about the foam.. They put those out at a tiime everyone was switching to monokote, don't know why they didn't do it right.. the US arfs do fly good though

That one does have foam for I had one!! Did not like it......
